Another great song! This is one of my most anticipated albums of the year.
― kitchen person, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 05:17 (five years ago) link
she was pretty good just now! played two other new songs from the album: "unwanted guest" which was similar in style to "without a blush" with a darker, almost nine inch nails-ish verse and then a huge shoegaze-pop chorus, and "her own heart" which was a ballad in 6/8 that made me think 'shoegaze taylor swift'
― ufo, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 11:17 (five years ago) link
also charles from babaganouj was her lead guitarist and he was comically dramatic at that
― ufo, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 11:37 (five years ago) link
Loving the new single. I think it's my favorite so far! That guitar in the verse is fierce! Also love the bass.

"Without a blush" = sunshine Curve! this is glorious

Another solid track from her upcoming debut album! I'm getting some Liz Fraser vibes here.

I'm getting some School Of Seven Bells vibes from the new single. Really wish the album wasn't still so far away.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 4 April 2019 03:42 (four years ago) link
This is the first one, besides the Adult Swim one, that I'm strictly "meh" about.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 April 2019 04:57 (four years ago) link
I felt the same way after the first couple of listens but now I really like it!
― daavid, Thursday, 4 April 2019 11:27 (four years ago) link
Just saw her live. Unreleased tracks from the new album are all sounding great. At this rate it will probably end up being album of the year for me.
― daavid, Saturday, 20 April 2019 03:19 (four years ago) link
this song was on the jukebox a minute ago and i couldn’t tell if it was hatchie or the ‘90s.
it was “ode to my family” by the cranberries. i have never heard this song as far as i can remember.
i also think about natalie imbruglia a lot when i listen to this band.

I've had the album for a while now. It's so great.
It kind of sounds like what I imagine a fifth School Of Seven Bells album would have sounded like.
― kitchen person, Saturday, 15 June 2019 05:46 (four years ago) link
I'm very jealous. I was hoping it would leak, but nothing so far.Ah well, it's only 6 days now...
― fragglerock, Saturday, 15 June 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link
Remember when most albums used to leak 2 or 3 months early. Nowadays it seems to be 24 hours if that, which is probably a good thing.
― groovypanda, Monday, 17 June 2019 10:13 (four years ago) link
But why thou? For us, the listeners, I'd take an early leak over the excitement any day.For the artist, people who are gonna buy the record, are gonna buy the record. (I know I will, it's on my Bandcamp wishlist already.) And everyone else is going to stream it anyway. And there is virtually no difference in what an artist earns on streams versus having their music pirated/leaked.

“Secret,” oh my god
― josh winters (josh), Friday, 21 June 2019 07:52 (four years ago) link
album is very solid, "secret" and "keep" are the highlights from the tracks that weren't singles but "stay with me" is still probably my favourite

― josh winters (josh)
Yeah, this is the one!

I love this album so much.
― self-clowning oven (Murgatroid), Saturday, 22 June 2019 16:06 (four years ago) link
I like this album, though I don't think so for the same reasons I liked her early string of singles. This one exists outside of early 90s sonic nostalgia where those past songs were time traveling. But I'll tell you what this album *does* remind me of, though... Sky Ferreira's album.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 23 June 2019 13:04 (four years ago) link
Some food songs here, some skippable. The songs that somewhat like Cocteau Twins are better imo
― nostormo, Sunday, 23 June 2019 15:40 (four years ago) link
This is a bit more restrained and subdued than I was expecting but it is easily tying with Charly Bliss for my own AOTY
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link
The SVIIB comparison feels particularly apt - this does a similar thing in that it looks forward but with obvious influences, whereas the EP felt more like a well-performed recreation of its inspirations
― boxedjoy, Wednesday, 26 June 2019 18:08 (four years ago) link
Today's pitchfork review was pretty harsh-- it reads more like 5.0 than the 6.5 they gave it.
I do take issue with this line though:
For an artist so laser-focused on pop production, Pilbeam’s songwriting is unapologetically sophomoric.
― enochroot, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:23 (four years ago) link
makes me wonder how one could be apologetically sophomoric
― american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:28 (four years ago) link
the classic 'hype the debut EP & early singles / pan the debut album' manoeuvre
the lyrics aren't anything special but they're not embarassingly bad or anything and i thought it was strange the review focused on them so much/ it also feels weird to complain that there's too much dream pop guitar... on a dream pop album. it's not like the album is lacking in variation either
anyway the "born slippy"-esque synths on "stay with me" are the best
― ufo, Thursday, 27 June 2019 12:50 (four years ago) link
how are you gonna trot out another sounds-like-an-ad diss when "very reminiscent of making out with a 23-year-old mattress boy named DYLAN" exists

― mookieproof, Wednesday, 3 July 2019 23:30 (four years ago) link
Is the "Bernard Sumner" guitar pedal commercially available, or did she just nail the right settings?Because that guitar that comes in at 1:44 on 'Obsessed' is a dead ringer.
― enochroot, Thursday, 18 July 2019 19:36 (four years ago) link
probably just the right settings, she said it was a deliberate attempt to sound like "Regret"
― ufo, Friday, 19 July 2019 01:29 (four years ago) link
Saw her live last night. I think the album has a couple too many midtempo dreampop-by-numbers tracks that weren't especially exciting live, but her voice is great and the momdnt when the guitars crashed in at the end of "Stay with Me" was incredible. She also closed with "Sure," which is still probably my favorite thing she's done.
― jaymc, Friday, 13 September 2019 13:26 (four years ago) link
The album kinda washed over me when it came out (aside from "Stay With Me") but I pulled it out again in preparation for seeing her live last night (she was awesome btw) and now it sounds like a classic?
― Tim F, Thursday, 24 October 2019 23:55 (four years ago) link

i have a ticket to see her next month but i'm probably not going to go with the covid situation, i bought tickets right before news of omicron hit unfortunately
― ufo, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 23:00 (two years ago) link
I saw her play live a few years back and she was excellent - very faithful to the studio versions but for me at least that was absolutely not a problem.
― Tim F, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 23:33 (two years ago) link
yeah i've seen her before so it's no great loss
― ufo, Thursday, 20 January 2022 01:44 (two years ago) link
Maybe my favorite live-sounding act (compared to how the sound on the record). They really crank up the shoegaze and it works beautifully.

Incredible song. That second chorus really is a moment.
Her album coming out the same day as the Real Lies one is going to end me. I'm thinking of taking the following week off work.
― kitchen person, Thursday, 24 March 2022 19:21 (two years ago) link
is there anything as good as Stay with Me, Sure or Secret on the new record?
her first album disappointed me a little bit, but she has about half a dozen or so songs that have developed a very special place in my heart

wow, love the sound on this. got some real NIN/industrial qualities folded into the ravey/housey/whooshy/Cocteau soup she was already serving up.
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:13 (one year ago) link
yeah "the rhythm" really goes for it with its industrial madchester thing
― ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:27 (one year ago) link
idk if anything on here quite matches "stay with me" or "obsessed" but it's solid and maybe a little stronger than the debut overall, the new industrial edge to the guitars really helps
― ufo, Sunday, 24 April 2022 00:38 (one year ago) link
I don’t really hear industrial - more Curve (especially Cuckoo), though I guess if you were casting around for a contemporary reference point then the last Halsey album might be one.
I feel like the melodies Hatchie concocted on the first EP were so indelible that it has placed her in something of a quandary ever since. She occasionally gets back to that level (“Obsessed” being the best example probably) but both the first album and now this one mostly have less memorable melodies - but the flipside is that that maybe liberates her to explore sonically, and I can’t help but nod approvingly at almost every choice she makes on this new one. It’s a lovely sounding album.
― Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:05 (one year ago) link
Should clarify that “less memorable melodies” is only relative - there’s some fantastic melodies on both albums.
― Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:11 (one year ago) link
it's really just "the rhythm" that's not far off nine inch nails in places but the harder-hitting guitars on it show up a fair amount elsewhere too
― ufo, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:53 (one year ago) link
was only sorta interested in hearing this til the radio played "The Key." so good, it's the future Cranekiss foretold.

This has been a very dry year for music discovery for me. Nothing new that's come across my desk has really landed for me. But I'm listening to Hatchie's Giving the World Away and deeply enjoying it. I had never heard her before and this is really up my alley.
― peace, man, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 11:35 (one year ago) link
i agree that it's good. some of the new record is very natalie imbruglia-core, which really hits the spot when i'm in the mood for it.
― budo jeru, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 18:30 (one year ago) link
Oooh, both sides of the record end with locked grooves!
Yeah, she's working with an exciting blend of styles. Sometimes it's Natalie Imbruglia or Heather Nova, sometimes Curve, Lush, Cranberries, Happy Mondays on the title track for sure...so much more. A lot of artists that I love, but wouldn't necessarily listen to back-to-back.
