"ishiki" might be the most concentrated musical perfection i've ever heard

Ending of Electric Mole DVD

Had no idea she revisted Souretsu for EXPO14. Mixed feelings watch her do a full on Vegas arrangement, but the orchestra all dressed as US Army Sargeants is a nice touch

Ha ha good lord Midori Takada plays percussion on EXPO14. Nice gig!

the one other truly inspired moment from that DVD is the version of 'Stem' at 79:30

Almost impossible to choose between the various perfections of Shuukyou, Yatsutsuke Shigoto and Souretsu. And it's not like the rest is bad either. I'd also like to shout out Torikoshi Kurou, which is great, and which gets unfairly overshadowed

ended up voting for Yatsutsuke Shigoto just over Souretsu

just Yatsutsuke Shigoto has such a delightful arrangement? and I love the opening with the vacuum & news. the rock version on Ze-Chyou Syuu rules too

Souretsu is such an intense closer though!

ufo, Saturday, 23 June 2018 14:27 (five years ago) link

I also ended up voting the same way, with the same runner-up. The way Souretsu resolves its first chorus into sweetness (and then doesn't for the second chorus) is just the best. YS is the swankest song ever tho

all nine ILM SR fans probably already seen this but we need at least one post-results post

the second of the three KZK-era DVDs, Baishou Ecstasy. first time she worked with Saito Neko / going straight cabaret arrangements of her songs, was almost shocking at the time, still oceans away from Vegas.

that site's crazy. I stopped investing in SR/TJ DVDs after Just Can't Help It but EXPO14 & Mangarama have a few moments. She works hard and the productions are bafflingly expensive & ambitious, even if the albums are all meaningless compilations of themes / jingles for tv shows or shopping center openings or coca-cola ads. Every album has at least one or two songs I like, but there's no western equivalent to this career trajectory without resorting to body transference, like what if the followup to Homogenic was Let's Talk About Love. I keep hoping.

The DVD I've watched the most is Gekokujyo Xstasy, I love the Honnou themed staging and the little interstitial sections.

two months pass...

I've decided that Yat(su)tsuke Shigoto is the best song ever, or something. The cure for depression, the motherlode, the pop moment of the noughties. It should be in every film. I can't listen to it without thinking about it afterwards for hours. I can't walk to it without strutting. I want there to be a 2000-2019 tracks poll just so I can bung it loads of points

imago, Monday, 3 September 2018 11:32 (five years ago) link

oh the extra tsu is an era in the romanisation. i'd just copied the tracklist from somewhere and missed that lol

it's such a great song - the news broadcast & vacuum at the start and the playful orchestration over that driving beat is incredible. the Shouso Strip-style rock version on Ze-Chyou Syuu is great too

Yeah that version is amazing too and it brings out an element of the song that's key to my unbridled adoration - it could ALMOST be a Cardiacs song, melodically - but the slow rework takes the same melodies and makes them into this divine orchestrated pop classic. It's SO good.
