The Kinks over John and Yoko.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:19 (four months ago) Permalink

i like that chimo record. fuck a tom rush.

scott seward, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:24 (four months ago) Permalink

Beefheart, Alice or Spirit. Those might even be my favourite releases by each of those artists

Toto Cuomo (NickB), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:28 (four months ago) Permalink

Never heard of Chimo though - who are they Scott?

Toto Cuomo (NickB), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:29 (four months ago) Permalink

Live at Topanga Corral was among the first albums I ever bought, as a cutout, so I listened to that an unbelievable number of times as a kid.

And Cold Blood was among the first national touring bands I ever saw, on the State Fair "Young America" stage, whereupon I ordered Sisyphus from Record Club of America and played that a ton as well.

Yoko narrowly over Art Blakey -- Roots and Herbs is killer, but was recorded in 1961, so it doesn't feel right to pit it against 1971 records.

Very very curious which critics reviewed which records.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 18:40 (four months ago) Permalink

I know Bangs did Beefheart, Amon Duul and a couple others. Dave Marsh did Lennon/Ono, Coltrane, Kinks, Doors and about 10 others. Mike Saunders did Badfinger.

Lennon, and that's the only Lennon record I like

"Never heard of Chimo though - who are they Scott?"

proggy canadian jazz-rockers. a minor pleasure, but i am all about those. they were one and done.

Decals, though I like a lot of these.

VyrnaKnowlIsAHeadbanger, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:16 (four months ago) Permalink

that Maury Muehlelson album has a very cool lyrics insert. just thought i'd point that out. not the greatest album in the world though. worth hearing, but not great.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:34 (four months ago) Permalink

that marbles album was basically a front for the bee gees. they wrote most of the songs on it.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:37 (four months ago) Permalink

the Carp album has some decent stuff on it. Gary Busey's band.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:39 (four months ago) Permalink

Brainbox was Jan Akkerman's old band. before the majesty that was Focus.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:41 (four months ago) Permalink

Beefheart or Spirit.

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:41 (four months ago) Permalink

also, i wouldn't mind having a copy of the joy unlimited album. i never see it. didn't exactly light a fire in the u.s. not even a savage rose-level fire.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:43 (four months ago) Permalink

Amon Duul- Prophecy

What's this?

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:44 (four months ago) Permalink

i like a lot of these obviously (i listened to both fat mattress albums last week!) but i am voting for juicy lucy because they kicked ass and nobody else will vote for them.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:45 (four months ago) Permalink

might as well confess that I'll be the guy voting for Chunga's Revenge, I love that record.

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:56 (four months ago) Permalink

Amon Duul- Prophecy

What's this?

I think that should be Amon Duul- S/T with Prophecy as the label.

The headings aren't exactly standardized

President Keyes, Thursday, 31 May 2018 15:59 (four months ago) Permalink

I think the Emitt Rhodes record is my favorite

President Keyes, Thursday, 31 May 2018 16:00 (four months ago) Permalink

Yeah, that's the US release of Psychedelic Underground I believe. (xp)

Bangs on Amon Duul: "This is undoubtedly the worst record out this year."

President Keyes, Thursday, 31 May 2018 16:17 (four months ago) Permalink

What do the Conception Corporation and Birth Control and Joy Unlimited sound like? Think I've heard most of the others.

dow, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:26 (four months ago) Permalink

Conception Corporation was a comedy troupe. One of the guys ended up playing keys in the Blues Brothers Band.

President Keyes, Thursday, 31 May 2018 19:33 (four months ago) Permalink

Comedy for LP, similar to, but not nearly as good as, Firesign Theater.

... although "Sunday! Sunday! US Amphetamine Speedway" has been a phrase in my subconscious for years.

Birth Control were pretty cool. German band. They made absolutely no dent over here. Epitaph and Lucifer's Friend made more of a dent here and they also didn't make much of a dent. Heck, Frumpy and Jane probably made more of a dent.

the Birth Control album was also on Prophecy in the states like the Amon Duul, so, at least Prophecy promos were getting an ear.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:33 (four months ago) Permalink

Joy Unlimited were a cool proggy female-led german band. their first two albums came out in the u.s. but i never see them anywhere. their other albums i would have to go to germany to find. for fans of curved air, savage rose, earth & fire, etc. i dig them. i would totally buy an affordable CD box of their albums.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:40 (four months ago) Permalink

it's insane to me that so many amazing albums were all released in the same month or so. i hope that when it's 2066 i'll be able to look back at may 2018 and say the thing about a bunch of cool albums i discover in the interim.

i went for Ptah the El Daoud

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Thursday, 31 May 2018 20:42 (four months ago) Permalink

I suppose POB is the best, but Sardonicus and Share the Land are my favourite. I voted for Sardonicus, my go-to stoner album in high school.

clemenza, Thursday, 31 May 2018 21:15 (four months ago) Permalink

Which ones did Bangs review?

clemenza, Thursday, 31 May 2018 21:16 (four months ago) Permalink

He has a long lead review of Decals, and a round-up piece covering "foreign" records (Duul, Brainbox, Joy Unlimited, Birth Control, The Cats, The Marbles)
