Top 50 Most Properly Rated Electronic Albums

As noted in the overrated thread, I have stayed far away from electronic music previously in life but now I'm into it and don't know where to start.

What are some good ones to check out? "Rated" as in "acclaimed".

ok, proper answer : rebotini/music components.

can’t bear to listen to akufen anymore. it’s like a keyboard demo song but for a fancy sampler. glitchy funkless rhythms that demonstrate technique but little musicality

the late great, Friday, 11 May 2018 19:41 (one week ago) Permalink

total was good until #4 imo

1994 not a particularly good year for electronic albums imo

the late great, Friday, 11 May 2018 21:05 (one week ago) Permalink

1994 was portishead, SAWII, biosphere - patashnik, woob, 76:14, oval - systemisch, kenny larkin - azimuth, robert hood - internal empire

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Friday, 11 May 2018 21:15 (one week ago) Permalink

would not call portishead electronic but yeah those are all good ... “jilted generation” and “dubnobass...” too

The Late Great - I know it seems like it, but I promise I am not trolling you. I have seriously never heard of anything in this thread aside from Autechre and Portishead and Larry Heard. Primitive Painter(s) is a Felt song for me. I really did recently discover Andy Stott and liked it and then I read the ILX thread saying it was overrated and my curiosity shot through the roof. What do you guys and gals think is NOT overrated? I'm mostly interested in the last 5-10 years. Not sure when I'll get to 1994. I'm starting at the beginning (LOVE E2-E4 but I'm already well-acquainted with that one) like Mr. Fingers, etc. and then trying to pay attention to current stuff that's coming out. Never heard the name Jon Hopkins before yesterday, for example. Have a bad feeling about that one though.

Thanks everyone for the recs!

If you're interested in stuff like Fingers you can't really go wrong with this box set:

Jordan - to narrow it way down, what is Andy Stott? What is that kind of music called? I have no clue. Do you have any recs for stuff like that?

brimstead, Friday, 11 May 2018 23:03 (one week ago) Permalink

honestly pretty much all the albums in the "most overrated electronic albums" thread are worth listening to. somebody's going to recommend you a white label ep with no title and no artist and it'll be great but you know, a lot of that thread is like people complaining about how "kind of blue" is an overrated jazz album, which it of course is.

electronic albums in general are overrated. the album isn't the best format for electronic music.

Thank you everyone.

I don't know why I can remember every obscure post-punk band but I can never remember any electronic stuff. It's like a mind wipe. I really like Huerco S and listened to that a bunch. Totally forgot it existed. Same with Omar S.

I tried Jlin - I think she might be beyond me.

i feel there's this aspect to electronic music that actively works against the idea of a canon. there's other reasons for the glut of whitelabels as well but it feels like part of it is that once you start talking about which records are The Best you close yourself off to the new.

it's not my style.
I was genuine re my suggestion re the TOTAL archive, I love them and think they provide a great entry point into all that is wonderful about electronica.

I think some people don’t rate it highly but I really enjoy the Voices From the Lake self-titled, it’s pretty sublime. Some may find it boring, though.

The Moodymann DJ Kicks compilation is essential.

Yagya has released some vv beautiful dub techno, especially the album ‘Rigning’.

James Blake - first 3 EPs and the s/t album
Mount Kimbie - Maybes EP and Crooks & Lovers
Actress - Splazsh
Hudson Mohawke - Satin Panthers EP
Flying Lotus - Los Angeles
Teebs - Ardour
Rustie - Glass Swords
Shlohmo - Bad Vibes
Lotic - Heterocetera EP

SHALT - Acheron EP

And lots of more dance-oriented stuff that doesn't slot easily into albums or EPs.
