just let go of "I Lie Around" ;_;

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Friday, 1 June 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link

listen, having gone through it already, you're going to have to let go of a lot of crucial wings songs

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Friday, 1 June 2018 21:05 (five years ago) link

though i regret not voting for "big barn bed" higher, you were right about that one doc casino

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Friday, 1 June 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

is anybody else besides Doc C still working on a ballot?

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 June 2018 21:08 (five years ago) link

I tried to put one together, but really struggled. If I did submit one, it'd be 100 songs - I just can't decide which 100.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 1 June 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link

we're not awarding nobel prizes here guys, just make a list

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 June 2018 21:34 (five years ago) link

Betcha there are voters expecting you to extend the deadline, betcha betcha.

WilliamC, Friday, 1 June 2018 21:58 (five years ago) link

NO

Οὖτις, Friday, 1 June 2018 21:59 (five years ago) link

just putting some final polish on and then i can go eat dinner

the ranking is completely insane and i think if i started over there would be almost no correspondence with this list but it's also a list of 100 solo beatles songs i really like so that's fine by me

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Friday, 1 June 2018 22:08 (five years ago) link

100 tracks, SENT!

the preponderance of Paul tracks and impossibility of really considering every song in relation to every other means that i had a few big chunks of consecutive and nearly alphabetical Paul surviving from the first round of compiling the list... but i mean generally speaking they're all kinda in the right part of the list so whatever. stoked for the results on this.

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Friday, 1 June 2018 22:12 (five years ago) link

I have absolutely no idea what to expect here, especially since there’s been a lot of badmouthing of the most popular and acclaimed tracks going on

“Blow Away” got a shot?

timellison, Friday, 1 June 2018 22:56 (five years ago) link

in the end I did not vote for that frog choir song since it is a bad song but I do hope it will place since it made me laugh every time it came on shuffle

How many ballots in the end?

Alba, Saturday, 2 June 2018 15:56 (five years ago) link

Was listening to Somewhere in England again last night and glad to have found a new friend. It doesn't have anything as tight as "Blow Away," but is probably about as substantial an album as the self-titled in the end. Not sure that it would have been better in its original form with the four songs that were left off, but glad they're using the original album cover now! Lots to like and I think the two songs that I had probably liked the least before, "Unconsciousness Rules" and "That Which I Have Lost," are both nice in their own way as compositions. The tuba in the latter is a gas.

timellison, Saturday, 2 June 2018 17:02 (five years ago) link

i didn't realize that almost all of yoko's POB was recorded in one night! from john's 1970 RS interview:

John: Nobody knows there is a point on the first song on Yoko's track where the guitar comes in and even Yoko thought it was her voice, because we did all Yoko's in one night, the whole session. Except for the track with Ornette Coleman from the past that we put on to show people that she wasn't discovered by the Beatles and that she's been around a few years. We got stuff of her with Cage, Ornette Coleman . . . we are going to put out "Oldies But Goldies" next for Yoko. I'll play it again and talk about it later.

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Saturday, 2 June 2018 17:24 (five years ago) link

I wonder how much (if anything) from the YO/POB session is unreleased, because I’d buy a “complete recordings/sessions” box in a heartbeat.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 2 June 2018 18:10 (five years ago) link

yo/pob is just a footnote in the classic albums doc about jl/pob but i was thrilled they devoted even a minute to it

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Saturday, 2 June 2018 18:12 (five years ago) link

Oh crap I didn't get time to do this I'll just send what I have.

Affix this to every ILM/ILX poll ever. I will never understand the agony that seems to accompany some of these ballots.

clemenza, Sunday, 3 June 2018 03:26 (five years ago) link

the "agony" is fun for those fussing over their ballots!

they also have "crackerbox palace" and "tear down" and fuckin "arrow through me." poor ringo just gets his usual 4-5 songs tho :(

flappy bird, Sunday, 3 June 2018 04:05 (five years ago) link

??? i definitely voted for "junk"

noel gallaghah's high flying burbbhrbhbbhbburbbb (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 3 June 2018 04:28 (five years ago) link

oh sorry i'm confused i only read the last 4-5 posts

flappy bird, Sunday, 3 June 2018 04:32 (five years ago) link

while the votes are being counted up, general question:

what are the best documentaries that dedicate a significant amount of time to the solo, post-beatles years? is scorsese's Living in the Material World good? i thought the two short clips from the 1988 Imagine film i posted above were gripping, so i definitely plan on watching all of that. are there others i should seek out?

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 June 2018 17:24 (five years ago) link

You should watch Material World. Clapton has a mordant sense of humor (his reaction to being asked what it would've been like if he'd replaced George in 1968), McCartney speaks affectionately and without smarm, and the Wilburys phase is a joy. The middle stretch is a drag, though, and offers few insights into his solo albums post-ATMP.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 3 June 2018 17:27 (five years ago) link

thanks! looks like Living in the Material World is up on Netflix, too.

is there anything worth watching that focuses on Paul? or actually, is there anything at all that focuses on him, worthwhile or not? my googling skills are failing me here but i can't seem to come up with much.

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Sunday, 3 June 2018 17:52 (five years ago) link

There's Wingspan from 2001. I have not seen any of it since it was first broadcast on TV.

timellison, Sunday, 3 June 2018 18:02 (five years ago) link

There'll not be a decent documentary or book on McCartney until he's long dead, I suspect.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 3 June 2018 22:59 (five years ago) link

the Barry Miles book is generally well regarded?

niels, Monday, 4 June 2018 09:11 (five years ago) link

It's not bad, but as a book it's very heavy on the Beatles years and I'm tired of reading about that part of McCartney's career, particularly since his post-Beatles career has hardly been uneventful and the Beatles years has been documented in forensic detail so much that there's really nothing new to say about that period anymore. He's had a long post-Beatles career, with a lot of material, and I'd rather hear more about all of that.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 4 June 2018 11:34 (five years ago) link

agreed
