Can't get past the euphoria of Metal Guru. Every second of it is pure joy.

triggercut, Thursday, 3 May 2018 09:31 (eleven months ago) Permalink

"Metal Guru" is indeed euphoric, in a way few songs are. imo Andrew W.K. hits this level of sublime pop overload. "All alone without a telephone" taken in modern context might cut even deeper than it did back in the day.

aw man this is gonna be tough. tempted to vote "Ballrooms of Mars". the imagery is fantastic, the "ROCK!"/guitar solo sections are orgasmic, the whole thing feels like a nod to the Spiders From Mars (tho both records were released within a month of each other (and Roxy Music's debut!) 1972 how amazing was that summer for glam rock). this was my first T-Rex LP i ever bought and i did because i had heard the Flaming Lips cover of "Ballrooms" and when i spotted this in a thrift store i remembered that title.

the album cover is super iconic. at the time i had some goth friends who were just starting to get into records and this seemed to fit perfectly alongside newly acquired copies of The Damned Phantasmagoria and The Cure's Disintegration (Bauhaus's "Telegram Sam" cover being a huge link ofc). that skronking guitar lead in "Telegram Sam" is still one of the funkiest things ever.

i really love the lyrics to "Spaceball Ricochet". "Book after book, i get hooked every time a writer talks to me like a friend". and that downwards sliding Prince-via-Syd Barrett coda. so nice! gonna have to get lit and spin this record again before i can vote.

Panic on the streets of Metal Guru...

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:10 (eleven months ago) Permalink

I think I've said it already in another thread but I find it funny that people were shaming Oasis for "Cigarettes&Alcohol"'s TRex ripoff but somehow, I have rarely heard the same critics about The Smiths' "Panic".
And I'm not even sure I don't prefer "Cigarettes&Alcohol" to "Panic"...

truly one of the great rock albums

my favorite moment on the album might be the intro to Baby Strange, which Genius transcribes as "One and two and bubbly-bubbly-boo-boo yeah"

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Thursday, 3 May 2018 14:31 (eleven months ago) Permalink

"Baby Strange" is so cool. i feel like it is a mutant version of "Baby Love" both kind of have that 4 on the floor beat.

i heard the Bauhaus version of "Telegram Sam" first and that is why i still probably prefer it to this day.

thinking back on this i might have to vote "Main Man". the repetition of the words, the absolute perfect tempo of the track, it is super hypnotizing. it really is the ultimate minimalist rock revival song.

i think of Tyrannosaurus Rex as more melodically/lyrically baroque whereas T. Rex is conceptually more stripped down ("Slider"/"Tanx"-era production excess aside). "Main Man" might be the platonic ideal of that newer aesthetic.

So happy to see all the love for "Main Man", which is one of those songs where I have a super vivid memory of the first time I heard it, where it just froze time and presented itself as the greatest fucking thing in the world.

But there are like 3 songs max on this record that I don't think are among the best rock and roll songs ever written, and as great as "Main Man" is, I'm voting for "Chariot Choogle". That fucking chorus! One of my favorite moments in all of recorded music. Flo and Eddie are god damn angels.

the full "Born to Boogie" movie is super worth a watch as well! that show is from the DVD re-release which includes two full concerts as bonus material. the movie itself is silly and fun: you get lots of live stuff plus silly skits with Ringo, an acoustic-with-string-quartet medley performance (below), and Elton John & Ringo on an early take of "Children of the Revolution".

"Metal Guru" collapses the distinction between verse and chorus. It's either all verse or all chorus. (I think a little of both, personally.)
