Bob Dylan Planet Waves

Good to great Bob album that flies under the radar. Why should New Morning get all the early 70s pastoral Bob praise? Plus it's the only studio album he ever made with The Band.

Good record. Voted for "Going Going Gone." The middle stretch is more properly a dirge.

Ha! It's true, there are too many slow ones. My favorite version of Forever Young is the demo on Biograph, maybe because it's the first one I heard, but maybe because the informal feel suits the song best.

Tough Mama

I like this record a lot, for a long time the only Dylan I owned was this and Greatest Hits Vol. 2. Initial reaction is "Something There Is About You," but I need to relisten.

Going Going Gone is great, but i'm leaning towards the fast version of Forever Young.

The album was originally set to be titled Ceremonies of the Horsemen; the release was delayed two weeks when Dylan decided to change the title at the last minute. Another, earlier working title was Wedding Song.

Planet Waves is a cool title but i don't think it really fits the album, but these other two contenders are worse

I'm a cornball, I still get broken up by "Forever Young", especially the first one.

i've always loved "never say goodbye" — don't think he's ever played it live, feels like it was conjured up on the spot.

My favourite Dylan albums are New Morning and this one. There's a lot on here which I adore. Forever Young and Wedding Song are likely choices, but ultimately my vote went to Dirge.

not quite sure I understand the distinction between Basement Tapes and Planet Waves?

campreverb, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 21:37 (three years ago) link

On PW you can hear Dylan's shirt buttons hitting the neck of his guitar; on the other, not.

Dirge Dirge Dirge, though You Angel You and the fast Forever Young are fun

You Angel You has that half-spoken, behind the beat thing he does

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 22:54 (three years ago) link

The way he sings "Rainy days on the Great Lakes / Walkin' the hills of old Duluth" is just the best

daily growing, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 23:33 (three years ago) link

I agree. Everything about this album is the best!!

There was a drugged-out gal in my freshman dorm who, along with her equally druggie bf, was obsessed with the lyric:

My dreams are made of iron and steel
With a big bouquet
Of roses hanging down
From the heavens to the ground

They had some Rimbaud connection or something figured out...

i love this album

top:
going going gone - robbie robertson's lead guitar is one of the best things about PW and he kills it especially in this tune
something there is about you - daily growing otm i love "rainy days on the great lakes" lyric so much, so much minnesota nostalgia on this album. i love danko's bass on this
forever young slow - might be worn out a little but i still find it powerful especially as song from a parent to a child
never say goodbye - more youthful minnesota reminiscing, "twilight on the frozen lake, a north wind about to break"

mid:
on a night like this
tough mama
hazel
forever young fast
you angel you

bottom
-dirge, i find this borderline unlistenable
-wedding song, who has time for this really

marcos, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 18:24 (three years ago) link

one thing i always find a little mystifying about Planet Waves is the general lack of backing vocals from The Band

tylerw, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 18:26 (three years ago) link

Yeah love this record, I was actually just thinking about it the other day

Raise yr hand if the first time you heard "Going Going Gone" was on Hell's Destiny Street

Dylan's first #1 album in America on pre-sales alone; after those sales, though, it fell rather quickly.

It's worth linking to a transcription of the text written on the rear cover (I used to sit reading it as I listened to the LP in high school): http://theband.hiof.no/albums/ln_planet_waves.html

I really have never loved this record as much as I thought I would when I first heard it. My favorite song from the sessions this was taken from - Nobody 'Cept You - didn't even make the cut! Really it's the slow plodding vibe of so much of the material that makes it feel like a slog. In fact, that would've been an even better title for "Dirge".

here's a pretty cool bootleg comp of planet waves-related odds-n-sods

Cool - thanks for posting that!

Really it's the slow plodding vibe of so much of the material that makes it feel like a slog.

For real(!?!) The playing is so sprightly and elastic! Even the slower songs crackle with energy!
