I know I’m supposed to fuck off these threads

Aphex and Autechre are like San Francisco and all my other crushes from 16-21 to me. I used to think you were my thing! I aspired to be like them / live in them / be them / whatever and then PBFFTFYDUDHZDDHXJXUFIVICDJAIDYUVKF what the hell is this I need to throw away these shoes and burn the socks

this is what pretty much everyone on the str8 fire thread has been trying to tell you for awhile now

xp like i know some people's thing on ilm is crazy OTT enthusiasm about everything they like ... but c'mon, not every journey is worth taking

Thank heavens you're here to tell enthusiasts about music (on message borad *I LOVE MUSIC*) to not be too enthusiastic about music. You're really doing god's work.

Which Autechre album is this on?

well played, but keep your fucking mouth shut about the socks, okay? You don’t know the socks.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:05 (six years ago) link

Josh, that’s the seed variable for everything they’ve done that I haven’t liked.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:07 (six years ago) link

LBI this particular thread is explicitly about shitting on autechre fandom, so maybe it's not the best thread for you to be reading?

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:10 (six years ago) link

don't take it personal is all i'm saying

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:11 (six years ago) link

people talk shit about music they don't like and disagree w/ statements about whether music is good or bad or not on ILM all the time, not sure why your autechre fandom should be some sort of sacred cow

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:12 (six years ago) link

Autechre peaked with "Lowride", let's be real

brimstead, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:15 (six years ago) link

lol ilu brimstead

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:16 (six years ago) link

I'm ok with people shitting on autechre fandom; I'm far from their biggest fan. I couldn't care less. But bring something to the table at the very least instead of these, quite frankly, dreadfully weak takes.

lbi's life of limitless european glamour (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:16 (six years ago) link

i guess it’s a little weird to jump into a conversation in which everyone has been enthusiastic about their newest work and say “wow, uh, i got off this train at quaristice for some reason, also i’m gonna be critical of the praise and degree of enthusiasm itt”. just a curious approach

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:19 (six years ago) link

people do that all the time on ILM! usually about way more boring music.

brimstead otm re: lowride, that is an amazing track

the late great, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:20 (six years ago) link

i like my takes like my grandpa liked his tea: hot and weak

at least we can all agree that lowride bangs

PSA: Fauxtechre – New England’s premier Autechre tribute band – will be performing May 11 at the Met in Pawtucket!

Autechre cheerleaders have compelled me to buy, and force myself to listen to, about 5 more eps and albums than I should have. IDGI. It’s all taking software that I know how to use and just using it to ends that I find unsatisfying at best and annoying at worst.

25 year old me can’t believe I’m saying this, but the acoustic noise parade you get from Bang On A Can or latter-day Boredoms is much, much more evocative for me- to tears, almost - while the synthesizer ableton laptop shit makes me feel mostly nothing at best or gradually increasing irritability at worst.

Brad, LBI: I couldn’t punch it down any more. The vents opened, it was emotional physics.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:38 (six years ago) link

i actually feel you on this tombot. were i not on the precipice of another avant phase (i think? getting into latter day björk and autechre seems like a sign of something) i’d basically be agreeing with you

but i also at this point feel like i even find “difficult” autechre pleasurable (like i listened to confield the other day and thought the melodies were so strong even sitting among the dense chaotic drum programming that they felt kinda like the air through a cat’s cradle) and i’m still trying to figure out why (i *think* it’s the formal quality of their work, like even though they’re way out beyond where they were i still recognize their approach as i go through the discography, and i never feel very far away from dance music)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:44 (six years ago) link

<3 u for explaining your take, Tombot. I think Autechre is way, way more than 'Ableton laptop shit' - the NTS sessions, for me, have proved they found the holy grail. They unearthed the universal string theory we were all in search of since forever. But I see where you're coming from. 25 year old Tombot is in the clear, just like your present day aged Tombot i simo.

(tho obv nothing will ever top Boredoms. nothing.)

xp

this particular thread is explicitly about shitting on autechre fandom

Is that what this thread is about?

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 23:54 (six years ago) link

some days I like listening to free/modern jazz. it clicks. the melody lines work, everything sounds pleasurable and fun. other days it just sounds like a load of chaos and noise, like a bunch of people just pissing around and taking the rise out of me. I get the feeling it's like that with Ae for a lot of people. Especially these NTS things - it's far away from structured, composed music and feels a lot more freeform/jam-style, so in some ways the value is depreciated, like they could just switch on their machines and pump this stuff out all day. I've made generative tracks in old copies of Reason that do a similar (if not more basic-sounding) sort of thing.
But I still enjoy it. So far I've been listening to this as background music, not in a deep-listening way which I usually do with a new Ae release. I think with this sort of material, that's a better way to appreciate it. Just put it on and let it do its thing.

This thread is impenetrable, no idea whats going on - but isn't that riff from Kool & The Gang (cant remember the title) but its one of the really good ones!

one month passes...

I'm just gonna say it, "dummy casual pt2" is fucking deranged. Splintered synth in agony, cokehead teeth-grinding, yawping into the void and message-sent accents.

The dubstep trudger. Very much makes me think of something Digital Mystikz or Skream might have played circa 2006 that on somehow.
