Beach House - 7 (2018)

Feel like this album deserves its own thread. So far the 3 singles point to a more shoegaze direction which is basically what I wished for when I heard “sparks” on DC. More live drums, distorted synth waves interlaced with guitar - anticipating this hard

unsurprisingly, it's exquisite!

the production is very 'dry' in an otherworldly and haunting way. sometimes grim, sometimes beautiful.

it's like they took the vibe of 'Thank Your Lucky Stars,' but moved it into outer space and replaced the chamber-y organs with sinister synths.

KevRus, Friday, 27 April 2018 15:53 (two months ago) Permalink

Black Car is their best song since Irene imo. Saimiliar atmosphere too.

nostormo, Saturday, 28 April 2018 17:09 (two months ago) Permalink

Last Ride. Amazing.
Prediction: this record will be considered a Dream Pop/Shoegaze classic on the future

nostormo, Sunday, 29 April 2018 20:19 (two months ago) Permalink

Yeah more Sparks is exactly what I wanted too.

Lemon Glow is already one of my favorite Beach House tracks.

Last single sounded a lot like broadcast

Dyslexicon (Ross), Monday, 7 May 2018 15:33 (two months ago) Permalink

I've been playing this for the past week or so now and I think it's already up there as one of my favourites of theirs. The transition from 'Dark Spring' into 'Pay No Mind' is so great. Aside from those two, 'Drunk In LA' and 'Lose Your Smile' are really hitting me hard so far.

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 7 May 2018 16:53 (two months ago) Permalink

Great record imo. Up there with Teen Dream as their best. It's their MPV in a way.

nostormo, Monday, 7 May 2018 17:45 (two months ago) Permalink

Based on the singles this sounds like a bummer record.

Black car has those “ha ha ha ha” vocals also found in O superman, mac’s book of love, goldfrapps hunt etc

ah, staying up til midnight (eastern) to listen to it when it hits spotify, the old release day tradition. i'm gonna give it a good listen before i hit the hay, and i can't wait.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 11 May 2018 04:42 (two months ago) Permalink

dang, loving "Drunk in LA" - reminds me of Pink Floyd

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:18 (two months ago) Permalink

it's just kind of weird for there to be an epic guitar solo in a beach house song and for it to totally make sense

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:20 (two months ago) Permalink

God-DAMN this is sounding good. "Drunk in LA" is my new favorite Beach House song.

Davey D, Friday, 11 May 2018 05:32 (two months ago) Permalink

the little found audio snippets used in "Woo" are really interesting. it would be easy for them to be distracting but somehow they fit right in

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:37 (two months ago) Permalink

the production is hard to nail down in that it does sometimes remind me a bit of broadcast, but it more often resembles JAMC / stadium rock

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Friday, 11 May 2018 05:44 (two months ago) Permalink

Loved this album from first listen and it's a grower. Now i think it will be a classic.
The melodies are superb too.

nostormo, Friday, 11 May 2018 06:10 (two months ago) Permalink

‘Woo’ is exactly what I’ve always wanted a more shoegaze-driven Beach House track to sound like.

Beach House and Arctic Monkeys understandably get most of the attention today, and they're okay. I'd feeling these more:

Death And The Maiden - Wisteria: Second album of dream pop/post-punk from New Zealand group.

Pay No Mind rubbed me the wrong way—one of the chord progressions made me grind my teeth—but the rest of the album is lovely.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 11 May 2018 16:58 (two months ago) Permalink

Oh wait, wrong song. It was actually Dark Spring. Remove the first track of the album, and the rest of it's a delight.

glad they went more in the direction of Sparks from Depression Cherry

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:28 (two months ago) Permalink

this is really good though it also feels like they've drifted far enough into shoegaze territory that their sound is less distinct compared to e.g. slowdive or cocteau twins

ciderpress, Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:33 (two months ago) Permalink

Maybe it'll click. Love the Cocteaus, Spacemen 3 etc etc.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Saturday, 19 May 2018 23:48 (two months ago) Permalink

What I like about this is how the abstraction of their lyrics match music that supports that ambiguity

Ross, Sunday, 20 May 2018 00:06 (two months ago) Permalink

I think it still feels distinct compared to the dream-pop canon of Slowdive, Cocteau Twins etc. as despite the added distortion this time around they're still much more synth/organ heavy than either of those bands ever were

ufo, Sunday, 20 May 2018 03:57 (two months ago) Permalink

Before this, the most time I'd ever spent with a Beach House release was the 7" version of "Used to Be" a decade ago. Always gave the albums a once over and then moved on. This one grabs me in a way the band never had.

Couple sonic details I like

The metallic hi hat in the right channel on dark spring

The slide effect near the outro of l’iconnue which I’m
convinced is an organ fed through a pitch shifter effect

I love this album so much. I was obsessed with Teen Dream and Bloom, then I kind of lost interest around Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars (don't know why!) and skipped that era, but now I'm back on board. I need to revisit those two previous records as well.

One of my fav moments is the voice going “yes!” In woo after Victoria says “I won’t give up”

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 16:29 (one month ago) Permalink

i think they said the previous two albums were an attempt at going back-to-basics after Bloom was bigger-sounding

ufo, Monday, 28 May 2018 16:51 (one month ago) Permalink

and yet DC has some incredibly 'big' moments imo, like that devastating guitar during 'Beyond Love's' extended fade-in, and the massive outro of 'PPP.'

I absolutely love '7,' esp. its continuation of DC/TYLS's trend of gorgeous fade-ins (Drunk in LA and Black Car) and fade-outs (L'Inconnue and Lose Your Smile). But I still think Depression Cherry has some of the band's best synth and esp. guitar work, and so I see DC more as a progression towards '7' than a retread.

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:47 (one month ago) Permalink

i like how 7 seems to be an antidote to depression cherry - "depressed and impressed" - there's a more valedictory approach to depression on 7, it's not that the sadness has went away it's just that it's managed

California scheming (Ross), Monday, 28 May 2018 22:48 (one month ago) Permalink

yeah ‘Beyond Love’ will forever be my fav! I think it’s DC’s thesis statement.

sad that it isn’t regularly played in their sets, yet 10 Mile Stereo STILL is...wouldn’t mind some other Teen Dream tracks instead!

KevRus, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 00:03 (one month ago) Permalink

California scheming (Ross), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 00:27 (one month ago) Permalink

Kinda feel dc and stars were just dry runs for this new record. They sound like demo albums in comparison to 7

DC was more glum and introspective, to me it felt like a calculated retreat from the more full on "Bloom". But TYLS definitely comes off like a dry run for "7", like they wanted to go back to making pop songs again but weren't sure how it should eventually sound.
