I posted this in the rolling worst music of 2018 thread but I've seen him around enough that he needs his own thread. What the fuck is this shit? my roommate says listening to him is like he's his ex girlfriend he won't stop texting and getting reassurances from. i think the kids love him... he got famous with a post on UNILAD lmao

Having once owned a ‘94 Corolla, I have to at least grudgingly endorse that FB acct. name...

Is this actually music in any sense? Seems like some spoken-word shit(?)

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Saturday, 24 March 2018 01:27 (one year ago) Permalink

Yeah, that’s really bad. Which other artists are Hobo Johnson fans listening to? Am I right in guessing that this is the part of a Venn diagram where like Mac DeMarco and Brockhampton fans meet?

triggercut, Saturday, 24 March 2018 05:19 (one year ago) Permalink

Been seeing this name everywhere lately

flappy bird, Saturday, 24 March 2018 06:12 (one year ago) Permalink

this stuff is so earnest and truly felt and so, so very fucking bad

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 24 March 2018 12:33 (one year ago) Permalink

It's basically spoken emo for teenage incels. It's fucking awful, no question about it, but the amount of contempt it generates speaks volumes about how we view these pathetic (in a potentially non-pejorative sense) 'forever alone' types. As sad as this music is, the response to it is even sadder in some ways.

pomenitul, Saturday, 24 March 2018 12:44 (one year ago) Permalink

I've resolved to try to be less of a snob, but I can say without hesitation that I could never date or even be friends with a person who enjoys this music

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 24 March 2018 13:18 (one year ago) Permalink

also his fans may be but I don't see this guy as incel at all, think that's a misread. I can see a lot of quasi-hippie liberal arts youngs being very irl charmed by this bozo

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 24 March 2018 13:22 (one year ago) Permalink

I didn’t make any such claim about the man himself. His audience is what interests me. And given how the purportedly creepy young man has been demonized in recent years (cf. ‘nice guy’ meme), I’d wager he’s viewed as insufficiently PC by said liberal arts ‘youngs’.

pomenitul, Saturday, 24 March 2018 13:28 (one year ago) Permalink

this seems to fit snugly with my brilliant and wise thread the music of the internet generation

imago, Saturday, 24 March 2018 13:30 (one year ago) Permalink

xp you may be right. He looks like the kind of guy who offers unsolicited backrubs and makes a moaning noise when he hugs you (too tight)

but maybe he's a nice guy, I dunno, all I know is his music makes me want to kill myself, especially the yelling parts

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 24 March 2018 13:38 (one year ago) Permalink

It makes me feel old in the best possible way.

pomenitul, Saturday, 24 March 2018 13:42 (one year ago) Permalink

Is this actually earnest? Haven’t looked deeply into him and maybe watched 2/3 of the video the other night but assumed it was jokey.

circa1916, Saturday, 24 March 2018 14:13 (one year ago) Permalink

no I actually think he's sincere as fuck

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 24 March 2018 14:21 (one year ago) Permalink

this stuff is totally for teens. if you are not a teen you ain't gonna like it.

Paul lol man, plenty of datable and friendable people like bad music

tinnitus the night (Ross), Saturday, 24 March 2018 16:08 (one year ago) Permalink

I know, I just think this would be a stumbling block. I just can't imagine connecting on any level with someone who would find something of value in this music. I might even listen to someone try to defend ICP--on the basis of irony, on the basis of pure WTFness (magnets, Christianity, etc), on the basis of the fact that I too liked "rebellious" and stupid music when I was young--but not this.

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 24 March 2018 16:24 (one year ago) Permalink

Then again, I don't typically socialize with anyone born after 1990, and don't have kids, so that may be why I'm having so much trouble wrapping my brain around this

Paul I think your point Is fair. We all have limits to what we can connect to with others

this music is for kids, y'all can keep listening to slowdive or eddie delmar or whatever it's not going anywhere lol

sleepingbag, Saturday, 24 March 2018 17:45 (one year ago) Permalink

Watched the video yesterday. Made me die, but I can see why certain teens would be into it. Dunno about the sincerity, though. Dude's shtick seems to wobble around on the line separating horrifying earnestness from sarcastic tongue-in-cheek without committing to either. Which = the internet, I guess. A bad idea whose time has passed.

Yeah it’s like when my teenage niece told me to listen to Black Veil Brides (“make sure it’s one of these two albums!”); and I heard five seconds and was out.

Mungolian Jerryset (bendy), Saturday, 24 March 2018 19:50 (one year ago) Permalink

i think what makes this guy especially internet is that we can't tell how sincere he actually is and it also is very internet that it doesn't matter at all how sincere he is, it's still real and anything you project onto him is real

well 21 pilots was not quite my thing but i can respect why someone would like it and also i wouldn't want their fans to get pancaked with a cement mixer due to their music taste like i would with a hobo johnson fan so. peace to all

global tetrahedron, Sunday, 25 March 2018 17:34 (one year ago) Permalink

"this music isn't for you, it's for young people" kinda implies that all young people like the same things. When I was a teenager, lots of teens liked some horrible music and got clowned by other teens for liking it.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 25 March 2018 17:48 (one year ago) Permalink

I thought it meant that the set of ppl who like this stuff are all young (not that the set of all young ppl will necessary like it)?

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Sunday, 25 March 2018 18:05 (one year ago) Permalink

but doesn't "this is music for young people" = rockism?

If Hobo Johnson is "music for young people," does that mean it is above criticism of the music on its own terms? If so, please explain the last 50+ years of music journalism

Here is a reddit post from a Hobo Johnson fan

I think it’s catchy and weird and cool and I appreciate the art because he really represents us manic lonely people. I’ve never felt so justified for relentlessly expressing fixations towards my BFF. I need her in my life because being her friend is halfway to being her boyfriend even if I’m not the one fucking her, she can still fulfill my loneliness.

it troubled me

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 10:08 (one year ago) Permalink

Loneliness is troubling. Peoples' deeply unhealthy responses to it are more troubling. The fact of Hobo Johnson may be most troubling of all.

zchyrs, Wednesday, 28 March 2018 13:57 (one year ago) Permalink

Reddit is never not troubling

absorbed carol channing's powers & psyche (morrisp), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 14:19 (one year ago) Permalink

Kind of tired of that old canard tbh. Reddit is absolutely massive at this point, everything is on it, including the non-troubling.

I thought it meant that the set of ppl who like this stuff are all young (not that the set of all young ppl will necessary like it)?

Right but if a 40 yr old and a 15 yr old both have the same reaction of "this is shit" to something, then rebuking the 40 yr old's criticism by saying he's too old to get it doesn't hold any water

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 28 March 2018 16:24 (one year ago) Permalink

^ I showed Hobo to my 15 yr old daughter and she agrees this is shit

Pretty sure this music is aimed at 'never been kissed' teenage boys.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 28 March 2018 16:38 (one year ago) Permalink

i guess i will be the voice of dissent

i don't want to listen to this, really ... for very long, at least

but i appreciate his vision. i like all those videos he did in that weird backyard space.

i think he's an half-annoying half-endearing combo of earnestness and affectation. i also think he's magnetic. he's got ... *something*. which is more than i can say for the face tat parade.

alpine static, Wednesday, 28 March 2018 16:53 (one year ago) Permalink

i started reading "the book of disquiet" by fernando pessoa, this stuff reads like it was written by and for teenage incels, it's creepy and weird and his fans should be pancaked by cement mixers (put-ti put-ti)

I'm joking obv. But a lot of dodgy stuff seems to live there that you wouldn't find elsewhere (at least other major social media sites). I understand that "anything goes" ethos to be part of the appeal to "Redditors," but it is a turnoff to, well, me.

This guy finally flew into my radar and I wish I had some sort of missiles to shoot him with.

I was looking at NPR’s tiny concerts and it caught my attention that this guy’s recent performance has like 800k views even more than T.I.’s 200k, so I clicked and watched half a song before I quitted out of cringe.

What is happening here? How is this guy so famous, he is legit terrible.

Oh, and here's a choice comment from the YouTube video of 'Peach Scone': 'words can't describe how hypnotic and extremely impressive this is. this one take that was captured was pulled off flawlessly. everything about this video is so punk rock it hurts. i'm going to be following the hell out of this group.'
