Valle is an all-timer, from his bossa stuff through the high concept 70's stuff to the boogie era. Saw him live at a Jazz club in London playing with Azymuth and it was one of the greatest concert experiences I've ever had. By the end of it everyone got off the tables and started dancing around despite the lack of space.

that does sound fun. i've been toying around with estrelar samples tonight, might be fun to do a cut'n'paste re-edit with 'em in the style of sound stream

loving that jackie stoudemire! wish it wasn't so expensive! though i see numero gave it a reissue/remix treatment a few years ago. it's got me exploring her 90s house stuff as jaqueline. some of it sounds good.

ten months pass...

So now that mainstream ILM has expressed its undying love for Van Halen and Cyndi Lauper in the Best Songs of the 80s thread, I’d be interested in seeing some lists of POV or POX for specific subgenres, like top five boogie songs from 80s, top five Italo disco cuts, or your top ten post-disco jams.

Feels like if it’s worth doing then it’s worth doing well so I should put in some effort if I’m going to make a list, and not just post the first five songs that pop into my head.

Any interest here?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 27 September 2021 14:19 (two years ago) link

POX/POV stands for... pick only 10 / pick only 5? i could go for that

davey, Sunday, 3 October 2021 11:33 (two years ago) link

Actually:

80s Italo Disco POX

And a major poll:

La musica si muove appena: The ILM ITALO Poll (Results Thread)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 3 October 2021 13:03 (two years ago) link

Moka I respect your intent but this is basically how most attempts to initiate non-popist discussion on ILM die now.

Anyway I’m still not sure when peak boogie was (was it actually the 70s?), I should probably look into that.

Meanwhile research for italo would involve me checking into Reddit, our sub had quite a good run of italo for a while which I should review for the sake of completeness, but I’ve been avoiding Reddit for almost all of this year and given the way things were going last time I checked, I have some anxiety that the admins there have already taken the sub from me and handed it over to the white supremacists or whatever. TMI I know but the tl:dr is that I’m not ready to face the wall of Reddit bullshit to look into italo yet.

Hence I will work on my list of top five post-disco tracks. Would it cause great offense if I tried to pass some new wave off as post-disco?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 3 October 2021 17:00 (two years ago) link

Not like there was tremendous interest to begin with although I do greatly appreciate Davey’s input. Still I probably should have just kept my crappy bickering over tactics to myself, soz.

3. Eddy Grant - Time Warp, Nobody’s Got Time

Just realized he accused the Gorillaz of ripping off this song, oof. What is even post-disco? Ok that’s really it for me. A lil help? Roffle.

I have a minor obsession and major enthusiasm for the disco-y jazzfunkpop of freeez, the UK britfunk unlikely popstars with timeless grooves.

Jazz funk greats, even. It is quite good although as the name of that Throbbing Gristle LP implies, jazz funk was not exactly an unknown commodity in pop of this era.

That first tune in particular is a powerful performance. (Although impossible for me to tell if they’re lip syncing in the video — I can’t even tell if the bass is plugged in.)

I mostly just knew their song I.O.U. of which I’m fond of the I Dub U version.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 3 October 2021 18:41 (two years ago) link

Right now I’m really loving the Bronski Beat version of I Feel Love but maybe not quite goat material. What’s most striking is the mashup with haunting 60s pop song Johnny Remember Me. Sublime. But still not best of decade.

their live TV performances were great, this is all-time from the old grey whistle test

Lovely. Cheers for taking the bait here, was getting a little lonely in this hole I dug for myself. Without further ado, the complete best top five post-disco songs:

5. Public Image Ltd - Death Disco
4. Patrick Cowley - Primitive World
3. Eddy Grant - Time Warp, Nobody’s Got Time
2. Klein & MBO - Dirty Talk (1983 Warehouse Edit)
1. Man Friday - Love Honey, Love Heartache

Someone do an NRG POV plz. Or alternatively a request is submitted to the archivist for related materials from the vault.

Loose Ends also premiere quality obv. Murphy’s Law is quite a track, sounds like a shuffle beat.

Time To Throw Down is another exceptional jam, that’s what I think of as peak boogie, rather than some point in the late 70s.

Brimstead trying to rein it in to the thread topic here? Plz to disregard any tangential musings on my part.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:13 (two years ago) link

Should’ve put Atmosphere Strut on my list, what an absolute stormer. Just blitzing the fuck out of the competition. (Sorry if that seems like a shitty metaphor, it really wasn’t meant that way.)

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:17 (two years ago) link

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Sunday, 3 October 2021 23:18 (two years ago) link

Atmosphere Strut is insane, I love it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 4 October 2021 00:29 (two years ago) link

Yeah it’s the business.

@ Swanswans ohh that Cheri, I see Small Town Lover is on the same LP. Seems like there’s a pretty clear transgender reference in Small Town Lover? Maybe I’m misreading it.

“The bride turned into the groom” bit is what I’m on about.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Monday, 4 October 2021 00:51 (two years ago) link

Atmosphere strut is magic, if you said it came out yesterday, I'd just nod. I love Murphy's law but don't know much about Cherri, Spotify seems to have an instrumental version and a remix version, which is the same with extra synths (which make me prefer the version I posted). Sorry my deviations from any strict definitions of boogie/thread title, I'll try to reign things in

dan selzer, Monday, 4 October 2021 16:12 (two years ago) link

So a few years ago I fell in love with "Free" by Melba Moore, first I got it on the This is It LP and when looking for it picked up a 12" of This is It with the flipside Standing Right Here. Then a few years later I put on Standing Right There and it blew me away. Then listened again and wasn't sure if that was it. Then I went looking for it again and couldn't find it. Then I found it and listened again and yeah, it's the jam. I realize now the 12" is actually Standing Right Here on the A-side w/ This is It on the b-side, a year after This is It had been already released with a different b-side. Anyway this one is a real stomper. Especially the second half. McFadden and Whitehead, Richie Rivera mix.

YES Standing Right Here. The horns are like seasoning with the perfect amount of spice. I have to confess I’m partial to the first half but that back end funky groove does suit her vocals wonderfully.

Getting back to the Fern Kinney — which was another fine choice — are we doing covers now? Cause if so this is a recent fave of mine.

Not really boogie at all but at least more boogie than italo. Also just realized it’s yet another Sly and Robbie production, I’m such a sucker for their work.
