I wanna talk about these doomsayers and I don't wanna poll.
what are your favs?
Epicus Doomicus obv classic, as is Nightfall and Tales of Creation. Ancient Dreams less so but still good.
I just got King of the Grey Islands and still rooting out my thoughts on it. dug the EP from 2016.
vocals - anybody prefer Langqvist or somebody other than Marcolin to Marcolin? Not saying I do, I just welcome the argument.
is Death Magic Doom any good?

oh I guess this is the King of the Grey Islands version that they just do this way permanently now?

exactly as you say but you underrate Ancient Dreams. With Messiah, one of the great doom bands of all time. I have listened to AD & Nightfall more than most records in my collection. (My 6-year-old was utterly obsessed with Ancient Dreams when he was 3/4.) still good afterwards...but not as much fun I think. always mean to give a harder look at the post-Messiah stuff but nothing ever sticks.

I do still *like* Ancient Dreams. it was actually the first Candlemass I heard as a kid in CD Warehouse, marveling at the amazing "evil" riffs, but at the time the "high pitched dramatic" vocals put me off since the only metal I'd heard had Hetfield-ian vocals.
I don't think the post-Messiah vocalists had quite his personality (or even that of Lundqvist).

lol @ me calling the amazing Robert Lowe a mere "post-Messiah vocalist". I take that back - loved his voice with Solitude Aeternus and while he didn't get to show off as much of his range here, I'm listening to Death Magic Doom for the first time now and he sounds great.

I think I'm going to listen to Dactylis Glomerata later, wish me luck
also if you like Messiah and haven't heard him on Mercy's Witchburner you are missing out.

Just started this band with Nightfall, wasn't sure I was liking it much at all in the first two spins but I'm really loving some of it now.

they're such an interesting band. have had at least 3 legendary vocalists in their ranks (Längqvist, Messiah, Robert Lowe), evil as fuck, thick riffs, almost as if they based their sound on the song "Black Sabbath".

Why evil? I'm not an expert but something interesting I've noticed is that a lot of older metal bands sound like the viewpoint of normal people or heroes beholding evil in terror and extreme metal is often from the viewpoint of evil. From Nightfall I thought they must be more of the former and the vocalist dresses like a priest.

oh I just meant the riffs sound sinister and evil af, not that they 'are' evil per se.
they are great at building imagery
