Spodee Boy from Nashville

I caught Spodee Boy in Nashville last night as part of Cold Lunch's Spewfest. One of the greatest bands I've ever seen in Music City--Trout Mask Replica-Devo-the Fall rhythms behind Connor Cummins' distracted musings.Absolutely amazing show. The bassist, Steve Poulton, has worked in town as the leader of Altered Statesman, the drummer, Tyler Coburn, plays in local band Yautja, and guitarist Luc Richards is also part of Waxed. Here's a video that is completely representative of their act. If you're gonna be in the Nashville area next month, catch them at Third Man March 10.

They're post-Beefheart punk, so they remind me of the Fall and Devo (most writers on the band point to Devo as an influence, but they're almost closer to Trout Mask and Decals-era Beefheart). Cummins says he's influenced by the UV Race, Aussies doing Germs-Misfits punk. He looks like some rockabilly star--Conway Twitty merged with P.J. Proby. When I saw them they played an instrumental that sounded like Man (no one would get the reference today, so I've got to resist the urge to compare them to Man when I write their show up this morning for Nashville Scene), and then they hit a harder groove and Cummins jumped on stage and did his act. I've been friends with Steve Poulton for years and he'd told me about the band, and he was right. They're breaking up after their final show at Third Man March 10. They have an EP out, hear it here.

(I'll post the link to the show review; we do them at the Scene as "the Spin." I saw the photogs taking pics at the show, so we should also have those up sometime today.)

Hey I was just asking!

It sounds intriguing. I'll listen to the EP

Oh this is great fun! But starting this thread only to say they're breaking up is a bit of a bummer

Better late than never. All involved here are doing other stuff, so there's that to look forward to.

Here's my writeup of the Spodee Boy show, along with more on the other acts who played Spewfest and some cool pix, here. I never miss a chance to name-check the great "Stick" McGhee.
