After a subdued 2017, let's start the year sweet, slinky, and slow.

Dexta Daps, "Weak to You"

Jahmiel on the same riddim (whose name I can't figure out):

Shenseea, "Sub Rosa"

There's a Kartel over that same riddim that's okay too. Not as good as Yabba Dabba Do, though.

as impressive a demo of his range as his last comp was, I'd be pretty excited if Ricky Blaze put out a project with a consistent sound

staying in that slow & vibey lane:

(Alkaline, "Mirage")

I missed this Suku-produced Tifa track last fall:

<3 Tifa but that really makes me miss Natalie Storm

excited to see Shenseea making a strong crossover* move on "Love I Got For U":

*don't really mean this from a business-side angle, more just adding new colors to the palette in a credible way

I'm feeling better about 2018 in January than I did about 2017 in August. World Vibes riddim is sweet. I think Konshens has the best voicing I heard so far (haven't listened to Charly Black yet, but he is sooo hit or miss; frankly the Kartel is trash), but the Voicemail video is nice:

rob, Saturday, 27 January 2018 15:32 (two months ago) Permalink

you know, I might like the Voicemail the most after all; also very pleasing to hear Alaine

missed the dembowish Vegas Mode riddim at the end of the year. I'm enjoying Ding Dong's version but haven't listened to all of them:

fyi, the new Hollie Cook is extremely pleasant throwback UK lovers if you're into that kind of thing (dog latin?). would love to hear a time-travelling Mad Professor dub version

rob, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:32 (two months ago) Permalink

I like Hollie Cook a fair bit, although I can never work out if it's a bit naff, a bit Lily Allen-goes-trad reggae or something. Lover's Rock revival should definitely be encouraged though

Badgers (dog latin), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 15:34 (two months ago) Permalink

That about sums up my feelings on her too, though I am enjoying this one (that said, I need to make a reminder to listen to it again outdoors in the June sunshine). I think it might be more appealing right now as the JA roots scene has quieted down quite a bit since I last checked her out, so there's not nearly as much out there to scratch my very infrequent itch for this kind of thing.

Or this one might just be better! I'm about halfway through and it's hewed quite closely to the cooing & sighing Bovell-produced lovers template without stepping into dodgier territory

Loving the World Vibes riddim, and while he’s (quite) far from being the best on it Kartel is NEVER trash, lol.

a few more goodies with that slow, mellow vibey sound mentioned upthread. at some point we might need to theorize on this--afrobeats influence? fucking Drake/OVO?

Popcaan "Bullet Proof":

Alkaline "Load Up":

I'll admit that Kartel on the Giggi Riddim (Ring A Rozy) is kinda weak. But this new one from him and Mixpak is pretty spectacular.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 16 February 2018 21:34 (two months ago) Permalink

yeah that's nice! funny how throwback it sounds in 2018 (tho I guess that pinch of Pumpkin Belly Kartel drops in makes it deliberate)

getting pleasing album-coming-soon vibes from this new Poppy video:

Shenseea seems to be on a "look how versatile I can be" campaign right now:

rob, Friday, 16 February 2018 23:04 (two months ago) Permalink

pretty bold sample on this new Kranium:

rob, Friday, 16 February 2018 23:07 (two months ago) Permalink

Kranium also has a very good voicing on the Break Through riddim that that Popcaan "Bullet Proof" is on

rob, Friday, 16 February 2018 23:15 (two months ago) Permalink

longneck, have I lost my mind or is this Sean Paul x Mavado track actually fantastic? halp

rob, Friday, 16 February 2018 23:53 (two months ago) Permalink

and while I'm both skimming links off robbo ranx and marvelling at Sean Paul-related tunes, this Dutty Rock produced Rope riddim is sweet:

rob, Saturday, 17 February 2018 00:11 (two months ago) Permalink

and one more, Busy Signal's "Dawg" is fire:

rob, Saturday, 17 February 2018 00:39 (two months ago) Permalink

The Mavado and Sean Paul is pretty dope! Is Sean Paul the most underrated of them all? I sometimes think he might be.

And even Westwood has been playing the Rope riddim lately, actually. It has a nice groove that will work in most settings.

And No Odda... that’s probably the purest r&b song I’ve heard in a good while.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 17 February 2018 08:52 (two months ago) Permalink

I was too distracted by the No Letting Go sample at first, but "No Odda" is really good! Maybe there's another Kranium album in the works? Rumors faded for me pretty quickly, but I just put it on and it's already better than I remembered.

tbf it's Mavado's "I'm blessed/ I'm sanctify" hook that makes that song for me (the song structure is also more interesting than I would expect), but surprisingly SP is pretty credible in spiritual mode. I am not and have never been a DJ but I could see Rope being fun as hell to play out.

rob, Saturday, 17 February 2018 16:22 (two months ago) Permalink

I really like the new heatwave mix - - but I'm going mad because I can't seem to identify the song that starts at 00.11.50, between RDX - Bang and Aidonia - Bruki. The one with the Ben ova hook. Does anyone on here know what it is?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 17 February 2018 18:31 (two months ago) Permalink

Russian's Bashment Time Riddim is a blast.

The Konshens version was released as early as in 2016 though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Sunday, 18 February 2018 23:41 (two months ago) Permalink

oh that works way better in full riddim mix form than it does individually

saw this sweet and breezy tune on the fader:

one month passes...

been way out of the loop for months, but this sounded like the best of the three (!) videos Konshens dropped for his new album:

I just wanted to pop in here and say that Popcaan's been on fire this year. Bulletproof is still my favourite, but these other ones are really nice also.

My Type:

Weed Stettingz:

The latest one, Steamy with Jah Vinci, is not quite on the level of the other ones, but still pretty good:

Bulletproof is so great, definitely my favorite 2018 JA track so far
but you're otm, he's hit such a level of consistency, I really hope the new album rumor is true

Masicka has really clicked for me this year:

rob, Sunday, 8 April 2018 13:33 (one week ago) Permalink

the riddim on Busy Signal's "Cut Off" is pretty wild with a real use-every ingredient-in-the-fridge ragga feel:
