I think we need more grime videos with the MCs dressed as wizards

paolo, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 17:58 (six months ago) Permalink

Skepta's been hanging out with the American lads. Best tracks he's done since Konnichiwa for me

paolo, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 18:05 (six months ago) Permalink

Getting into the latest Dave EP at the moment, everything else either doesn't stand out or I'm over with for now.

Custard Cream, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 18:36 (six months ago) Permalink

Dave seemed kind of Trenchant Social Commentary from the cursory listen I gave recently

#TeamHailing (imago), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 18:43 (six months ago) Permalink

good stuff Paolo, will be following thread (though I will probably not have any input)

Alakazam is v good

niels, Thursday, 18 January 2018 21:02 (five months ago) Permalink

two weeks pass...

The level of MCing in drill is high but a lot of the beats are just boring, this one's a lot better than your average track. Carns Hill's definitely the best at this style

Seriously one of the best MCs in the UK right now

paolo, Friday, 2 February 2018 20:03 (five months ago) Permalink

Get yourself a nine to five
It's not working

paolo, Friday, 2 February 2018 20:04 (five months ago) Permalink

do we have a UK afro thread because

||||||||, Saturday, 3 February 2018 00:27 (five months ago) Permalink

Yes we do and here it is -UK afrotrap - thread for discussing MoStack, J-Hus, Kojo Funds, Abra Cadabra, Belly Squad, Yxng Bane etc

I really liked No Don but I'm just not really feeling anything else that Lotto Boyz have done tbh

paolo, Saturday, 3 February 2018 14:29 (five months ago) Permalink

That Lady Leshurr track is excellent btw

drugs don't kill people, poppers do (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 3 February 2018 15:14 (five months ago) Permalink

it is indeed, and what a hilarious U2 bar

niels, Saturday, 3 February 2018 18:19 (five months ago) Permalink

Have some drill

paolo, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:54 (five months ago) Permalink

Are there any Americans making beats like this? I know drill's originally from Chicago but as far as I'm aware the UK guys have made it into their own thing

paolo, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:56 (five months ago) Permalink

three weeks pass...

Skepta on another American beat, with Suspect this time

Suspect going solo. This beat >>>

Sini Sayso on the second beat in this is I think the only time I've heard a drill MC rap about anything apart from violence or drugs. Obviously these are popular subjects in rap and grime but in drill it's just relentless, literally every song is about stabbing and/or shooting opps and/or paigons. And selling drugs

New Dave, doing his conscious thing

paolo, Saturday, 10 March 2018 12:29 (four months ago) Permalink

Another Lady Leshurr freestyle. Absolutely kills it

New Octavian. Got a bit of a James Blake vibe and a bit of a UK funky vibe, so that's a first

paolo, Sunday, 1 April 2018 19:05 (three months ago) Permalink

Any good grime tracks recently? Because I haven't heard any. What I've heard of Wiley's new album has been a bit average

paolo, Sunday, 1 April 2018 19:07 (three months ago) Permalink

Have more drill

(This one has a puppy in the video, so that's another first)

paolo, Sunday, 1 April 2018 19:17 (three months ago) Permalink

enjoyed that Octavian song a lot! which genre would you say it is?

niels, Monday, 2 April 2018 09:19 (three months ago) Permalink

first UKG song to mention beryllium?

||||||||, Monday, 2 April 2018 09:39 (three months ago) Permalink

I think that's the first song in any genre to mention beryllium

xp no clue. That one could easily fit in the afro-bashment/afro-swing/UK afro thread I guess but it's a bit housey so who knows. With that stuff it feels like we're at one of those awesome 'wot do u call it?' points where it's all a bit up in the air

paolo, Monday, 2 April 2018 17:03 (three months ago) Permalink

omg did u just diss tom lehrer

imago, Monday, 2 April 2018 17:50 (three months ago) Permalink

that song is cool but jme kills it too much compared to yung fume

imago, Monday, 2 April 2018 17:54 (three months ago) Permalink

"Hands" by Octavian is one of the best songs of 2018

niels, Sunday, 22 April 2018 19:07 (two months ago) Permalink

||||||||, Sunday, 22 April 2018 19:32 (two months ago) Permalink

for every genre there's an article like that every once in a while?

niels, Sunday, 22 April 2018 19:51 (two months ago) Permalink

Yeah pretty much. It's been a bit quiet recently and maybe it'll come back and maybe it won't

paolo, Monday, 23 April 2018 16:22 (two months ago) Permalink

Have yet more drill

(this one has another dog in it)

paolo, Monday, 23 April 2018 16:39 (two months ago) Permalink

ygg - “strikers”

||||||||, Friday, 18 May 2018 19:05 (one month ago) Permalink

All blacked out on the road like emos
Leave man stressed, lose hair like chemo
Try test the YGG trio
Must be on bobby like Valentino

||||||||, Wednesday, 23 May 2018 20:35 (one month ago) Permalink

That one's good, liking the old skool beat. Slightly disappointed by YGG's lack of tekkerz though

paolo, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:38 (one month ago) Permalink

So drill's getting quite a lot of coverage in the news now. I don't remember this with grime back in the day (or not as much anyway)

I feel like the producers in this scene have upped their game this year

paolo, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:46 (one month ago) Permalink

The gist is that drill artists are going to get targeted with laws similar to those used for incitement to terrorism even if the songs aren’t related to specific violent incidents - which seems like a legal stretch and massively open to misuse.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Wednesday, 30 May 2018 09:40 (one month ago) Permalink

but this law won't apply to Movies, West End theatrical productions, shit Nick Cave albums etc containing depictions of violence.

calzino, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 10:12 (one month ago) Permalink

This will only serve to "glamourise" drill. Best publicity it could have possibly gotten, surely

imago, Wednesday, 30 May 2018 10:18 (one month ago) Permalink

Couple of grime tunes produced by former UK Funky dudes. Beat on the first is by Lil Silva (and Sampha), second is by Champion

paolo, Friday, 15 June 2018 17:12 (one month ago) Permalink

New Octavian!

New Yxng Bane!

paolo, Friday, 15 June 2018 17:16 (one month ago) Permalink

this is just karma for you guys clowning me about chief keef

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 15 June 2018 18:51 (one month ago) Permalink

My understanding is that UK drill is a different thing from the US version now. I've seen a few people online saying that it needs a new name because it's not just like Chief Keef but with British accents. I don't really follow US rap though so I don't know

YouTube are taking down drill videos, one of the ones above has gone so watch em while you still can. More of them are having comments disabled on police advice as well

LD from 67 with Dizzee. First time I've heard him on a drill beat, he kills it (obviously)

paolo, Saturday, 16 June 2018 11:07 (one month ago) Permalink

Goddammit that's the wrong video. Bugzy Malone is rubbish on the one above btw

paolo, Saturday, 16 June 2018 11:10 (one month ago) Permalink

I know it sounds different — for a long time it all mostly sounded like lil herb’s “kill shit” or variations — but I haven’t been compelled by much of it yet personally

The karma comment still relevant

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 16 June 2018 15:55 (one month ago) Permalink

You haven't been compelled by it because its mostly fucking boring.

Still, it's giving the press something to talk about while they continue to ignore the British rap music that's actually popular.

Matt DC, Saturday, 16 June 2018 22:03 (one month ago) Permalink

Last Sunday I was in the park and I heard Yxng Bane out of car windows, mobile phones etc maybe seven or eight times.

Matt DC, Saturday, 16 June 2018 22:06 (one month ago) Permalink

liked that Darth Vader, decent bars and a relatively original beat

look forward to the Octavian album, guy has a really cool sense of melody

niels, Sunday, 17 June 2018 07:51 (one month ago) Permalink

Headie One and Skengdo and AM from 410 are most likely to blow from the drill scene right now, both seem to be going in a more pop direction (relatively speaking). Not really feeling the Skengdo and AM tracks tbh

paolo, Saturday, 23 June 2018 09:59 (three weeks ago) Permalink

Silwood Nation coming different again with pop drill done properly. T1 is one of the best MCs around and should be a lot bigger than he is. Nobody goes in as fast as him, he sounds more like a grime MC than a drill MC

paolo, Saturday, 23 June 2018 10:04 (three weeks ago) Permalink

Another good article by Dan Hancox about the police vs drill. I can also recommend his book 'Inner City Pressure' about the history of grime and the social issues around it. If you want more books about grime history (and why wouldn't you?) check Wiley's autobiography and 'This Is Grime' by Hattie Collins

paolo, Saturday, 23 June 2018 10:12 (three weeks ago) Permalink

Hancox book is particularly notable for what it leaves out as well - a lot of the soap opera stuff, who was beefing with who etc is barely touched upon, Crazy Titch aside. You wouldn't know that Dizzee and Wiley had even fallen out from reading it. That shit is a minefield and by and large an unwelcome distraction so I see why he left it out.

I like how pretty much everyone gets a mention except, pointedly, Big Narstie.

Matt DC, Saturday, 23 June 2018 11:00 (three weeks ago) Permalink

Big Narstie sold out by appearing on This Morning and not cussing enough!

calzino, Saturday, 23 June 2018 11:12 (three weeks ago) Permalink

Yeah I noticed that it made it sound like the grime scene was one big happy family back in the day, which was obviously not the case

paolo, Saturday, 23 June 2018 12:38 (three weeks ago) Permalink

two weeks pass...

Drake on a drill beat. He's not bad tbh, been practising his UK slang

And some non-Drake related drill

paolo, Monday, 9 July 2018 20:51 (one week ago) Permalink

— SKENGDO X AM 🐰 (@SkengdoxAm) July 10, 2018

Attempted 1.0 by AM has been taken down. One of the biggest drill tracks this year

paolo, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 17:30 (one week ago) Permalink

This is absolutely nuts. Obviously there have been plenty of panics about the effects of music on the youngsters but I'm not aware of this type of censorship taking place anywhere in the Western world in recent years. Taking down videos from YouTube doesn't really achieve anything either, someone will just reupload them

paolo, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 17:37 (one week ago) Permalink

And I know that drill isn't just harmless fun and that putting these tracks on social media can have real life consequences (and I do get middle class guilt about watching these but that's another story), but if you want to stop violent crime is this really the best way to go about it? Better to have guys making money off rapping about this, making videos, getting gigs than making money through crime (it is all guys by the way. I don't think there's any women involved in drill at all). I realise I'm probably preaching to the converted here

paolo, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 17:48 (one week ago) Permalink

do they take down white supremacist videos

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:47 (one week ago) Permalink

You know, I don't believe they do. Looking forward to hearing the right wing media having a go at those snowflakes at the Met for stopping freedom of expression because some people might find it offensive

paolo, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 20:19 (one week ago) Permalink

FFS it makes no difference, if someone's really intent on publically issuing a specific threat there are plenty of other ways of doing it.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 20:45 (one week ago) Permalink

Like I'm aware that some drill tracks do contain very particular threats to individuals but taking a video down will do nothing to stop anything, especially if a lot of completely blameless artists are censored in the process.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 20:47 (one week ago) Permalink

Short BBC documentary on links between drill and violence. It's pretty good tbh, also features some Scouse drillers

This lad's a decent MC but that mask makes him look like an absolute berk

More Yxng Bane. I love this guy
