it actually makes me like other holiday songs more just by dint of being such an obvious piss take, so there is that

Listened to it just now because I just played it, no regrets.

As far as Christmas tunes go I don't hate it. It's just a bit dull, like Elton John's 'Step Into Christmas'. They're both easy to tune out if they come on in a shopping centre.

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Saturday, 9 December 2017 18:26 (two years ago) link

came up once this morning. Frankly, if it's one of 200 xmas songs we have on shuffle this year, I can deal

Dominique, Saturday, 9 December 2017 18:31 (two years ago) link

I don't mind it tbh. I'm sort of interested in how many times I'll hear Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Carol of the Bells".

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Saturday, 9 December 2017 18:46 (two years ago) link

I would rather listen to Mannheim Steamroller’s general-MIDI schlock than the sad synth “pewp pew-da peep pewp pewp” under Sir Paul’s feckless vocals. This is the worst holiday cash grab. If crappy pop Christmas songs were jungle animals, this is the poison dart frog.

El Tomboto, Saturday, 9 December 2017 19:04 (two years ago) link

(small voice) I kind of love Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Carol of the Bells".

The issue that I have with 'Step Into Christmas' is it doesn't feel very Christmassy, it just sounds like an unremarkable Elton John song.

xxp wtf Step Into Christmas is totally Christmas-y sounding, it has sleigh bells and a choir and everything

Wonderful Christmas Time is the best Christmas song and should be played more often

The lyrics to 'Wonderful Christmas Time' but in a way they describe my ideal Christmas: no fuss, no stress, no drama, don't make a big deal of it, don't force expectations on yourself or others, just turn up and enjoy it.

EXECUTIONER!

El Tomboto, Saturday, 9 December 2017 19:52 (two years ago) link

Ha, I just listened to it on my own for probably the first (edit: now the second) time, as opposed to hearing it in the background somewhere. It's kind of astonishingly lazy but I think I like McCartney and resonant filter sweeps enough to love it regardless.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Saturday, 9 December 2017 20:05 (two years ago) link

The lyrics could even be referencing their own laziness: "We're here tonight, and that's enough".

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Saturday, 9 December 2017 20:07 (two years ago) link

And yet when the children's choir thing occurs - that's not lazy!

timellison, Saturday, 9 December 2017 20:17 (two years ago) link

That part sounds like it was written by an alien: "They practice all year long"? All year? By jiminy, you sure have been observing Earth and it's customs for a long time!

Yeah, the cost of hiring both Paul and Linda McCartney must have been substantial

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 9 December 2017 20:43 (two years ago) link

Personally I think people should save their bile for something that doesn't put the McCartney II production style on our radios every holiday season. The fact that this gets lumped in with "Christmas Shoes" or whatever is ridiculous to me.

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Saturday, 9 December 2017 21:02 (two years ago) link

Just posted this in controversial opinions:

ContrOp: Pretty much every song from the Christmas music canon up through like 'All I Want for Christmas is You' is an evergreen. Even the ones that are objectively bad (e.g. Mannheim Steamroller, novelty songs, etc.).

(Non-ContrOp: No one should have to be involuntarily exposed to any of these songs.)

That said, I just voluntarily listened to 'Wonderful Christmastime'. It's both terrible and wonderful all at once. It's like a magic trick. How do you do it, McCartney.

Oiled Launch (Old Lunch), Saturday, 9 December 2017 22:19 (two years ago) link

I like this song, but it's not a top tier Christmas tune. If it were, then it would be because Christmas was a 'meh' holiday like Easter.

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Saturday, 9 December 2017 22:57 (two years ago) link

good song, always welcome, i remember the first time i heard it the synth sound captivated me

the pleather of pleather paul (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 9 December 2017 23:13 (two years ago) link

pretty standard post-beatles macca imo, except for the synth effect, which is like something from a kraftwerk/berlin-era-bowie starter kit.

© louis jagger/richards (Pillbox), Sunday, 10 December 2017 07:07 (two years ago) link

the choir is the only part of this song that doesn't sound like it was written and recorded on the fly. I used to hate this song for its laziness; nowadays I think it's kind of charming

Vinnie, Sunday, 10 December 2017 09:17 (two years ago) link

xp I guess it's also hard to hate this song because there's post-Beatles Macca that's way worse.

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Sunday, 10 December 2017 12:25 (two years ago) link

I mean, can you imagine (unintentional joke) how bad things would be if 'The Frog Chorus' was somehow a Christmas tune?

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Sunday, 10 December 2017 12:26 (two years ago) link

Or put it another way: your go-to Macca Xmas platter is either this or 'Pipes Of Peace' (tenuously as the video is a recreation of the Christmas cease-fire football match). Make your choice...

Zings Can Only Get Better (snoball), Sunday, 10 December 2017 12:27 (two years ago) link

'We All Stand Together' is a far superior song to 'Wonderful Christmastime', IMO... better written, better orchestrated, better produced. I'm a huge McCartney fan, but don't consider 'Wonderful Christmastime' to be all that.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:35 (two years ago) link

'Pipes of Peace' is superior too, I think.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Sunday, 10 December 2017 13:35 (two years ago) link

In fact...

It's telling that I'm one of the biggest defenders of McCartney's post-Beatles output, and a huge fan of synthpop, yet this song makes me wanna hit McCartney with the synth.

'Let 'Em In' works better as a Christmas song, IMO. 'Wonderful Christmastime' seems to have been an exercise in Macca seeing if he could get a Christmas No. 1 with any old shit.

timellison, Monday, 11 December 2017 00:22 (two years ago) link

It feels like he came up with that hideous synth line and then, wasted, chanted "simply, having, a wonderfulchrismastiiime" as a free association. And then thought wouldn't it be hilarious to put sleigh bells on it and actually put it out as a Christmas single.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I love being there in the supermarket and suddenly hearing those synths, but the song itself is an awkward dud. There've got to be some good Christmas synth jams besides this one, right?

how's life, Monday, 11 December 2017 10:46 (two years ago) link

the obvious pick for 'good christmas synth jam' is Last Christmas

Wonderful Christmas Time is not really good but definitely very endearing for the bizarre vibe which is striking enough to be a welcome respite from most other christmas music

ufo, Monday, 11 December 2017 11:46 (two years ago) link

^ Indeed! "Last Christmas" is a strong contender for best George Michael composition ever, and the fact that it happens to be a Christmas song is secondary to its greatness.

Also, I think this thread should have been over after the first reply ("get the fuck outta here with this grinch bullshit").
