Yeah, some of Sly's stuff gives off quite an uneasy vibe, particularly There's a Riot Goin' On although that came later, although it was there before then too.

yeah they were definitely active. I feel like there was a genuine dark/spooky strain of funk right from the get-go, the genre just didn't really get going til '69 is all.

various Norman Whitfield productions, Curtis Mayfield, Eugene McDaniels. James Brown never really went there (altho I think you could argue the Grodeck Whipperjenny did)

The spookiness/darkness/tripped out-ness of a lot of Funkadelic's stuff 1969-1971 is a huge part of the appeal for me, without a doubt.
