I've heard it ain't so hot.

The guitars on the first track are probably worth it.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Although I have sold my (bought new on the morning it was released) copy some months ago.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 11 November 2002 00:57 (seventeen years ago) link

I definitely would play 3 bucks for it if I didn't already have it. "Renegade Princess" is pretty sweet. "Nevermind" and "Free City Rhymes" ain't bad and the title track builds up pretty impressively. So 3 bucks for a decent 4 song Sonic Youth EP with 4 "bonus" tracks (including some "poetry" from nitwit Moore) of SY fille ain't bad at all.

Anthony Miccio, Monday, 11 November 2002 00:59 (seventeen years ago) link

SY fille should be SY filler. damn typos.

Anthony Miccio, Monday, 11 November 2002 01:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, "Nevermind" has a nice tune too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 11 November 2002 01:12 (seventeen years ago) link

i still don't quite understand why everyone hates it so. that first track is one of my favorite sy songs evah.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 01:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The awkward beat poetry and the short number of songs is a good part of the reason. Robert Christgau's review got both why people don't and do like it. Personally, I'd give it a 6 out of 10 myself. It's fairly pretty for "ambient" but the vocals are pretty grating on most tracks. That didn't bother me so much when the guitars were louder and there were more riffs.

Anthony Miccio, Monday, 11 November 2002 01:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Just to head off Aphex Twin fans or something. When I say ambient I mean spare mood music. Which is what most of the album strikes me as.

Anthony Miccio, Monday, 11 November 2002 01:35 (seventeen years ago) link

well, yes, the lyrics suck (as i wrote on either my blog or ilm: my ex wouldn't let me play it in the house she hated the lyrics so much), but (also as i wrote somewhere else), SY have always had wonky, overwritten/phrased lyrics. love them, love their pretentions, etc etc.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 11 November 2002 01:50 (seventeen years ago) link

this record is beautiful. rock fans and their riffs.

Josh (Josh), Monday, 11 November 2002 01:55 (seventeen years ago) link

It's much better than I thought it would be. Not up to the standards of the Sister-Evol-Daydream Nation troika, but definitely one of the better things they've put out since those days.

Short answer -- it's a steal for $3.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 11 November 2002 02:08 (seventeen years ago) link

The title track is pure beauty.

Also- "boys go to Jupiter, get more stupider, girls go to Mars, become Rock Stars!!!"

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 11 November 2002 02:11 (seventeen years ago) link

The one time I gave it an ear at KUCI both I and the friend who was with me found it pretty damn pointless. Might be time for a relisten...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 November 2002 02:54 (seventeen years ago) link

It's my least favorite Sonic Youth album, but certainly worth $3. The title track is good, as are "Free City Rhymes" and "Side2Side." Awful lyrics on too much of it, sadly. But those songs are pretty decent.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 11 November 2002 03:37 (seventeen years ago) link

this is one of the recs i want to reconsider actually.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 11 November 2002 12:15 (seventeen years ago) link

i think it's awesome. the title track is worth $3 alone, doubtless lots more. 'free city rhymes' is gorgeous too, thurston mixing the 'free'impulses of SY's more 'out' stuff with the trad melodicism of SY's more canonical works. and Renegade Princess is as convincing a rockout as they've laid down inthe last couple of LPs. great, though Murray Street is the true second (or nth) coming of the Youth.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I liked the album a lot. I thought it was a return to form over the terrible A Thousand Leaves (and it's considerably better than Murray Street). Go ahead and spend the $3.

Vic Funk, Monday, 11 November 2002 14:52 (seventeen years ago) link

i couldn't stand it for a long time, but the other night I put it on as a last resort after i couldn't find my copy of Washing Machine, and in light of me falling in love w/ Murray St. it's aged pretty well. it's all still downhill from "Free City Rhymes" but i can tolerate it a bit better. the instrumental versions they played at Bumbershoot still trump it by a long shot, though. if you're a geek like me who can find worth in even SY's most meager turds then yes, $3 is fair.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:22 (seventeen years ago) link

way better than murray street.

Queen G (Queeng), Monday, 11 November 2002 18:49 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm a rock fan, I love riffs, and I like NYCG&F a lot. you can have it both ways.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Then again, the frickin Strokes are better than Murray St, so that ain't sayin' much!

kate, Monday, 11 November 2002 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

b-but Kate the twin sax attack of jim sauter and dietrich brighten up one of the tracks, no?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 11 November 2002 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

well you are enlightened matos.

i think thay're all brill,ace,fantastic

this record is really underrated. outside of some sort of embarrassing lyrics (even by embarrassing kim g. lyrics standards the boys go to jupiter thing is bad), it's really a gorgeous sprawl...

six years pass...

As years and years go by, this album keeps growing on me. Even beyond Free City Rhymes, which is my pick for their last great song. The lyric thing kind of wears off after time, and I've never had a problem with Jupiter/stupider. At some point there should be a deluxe version and the inevitable critical reappraisal. Playing the end of renegade princess at the moment, which almost sounds like a throwback to Bad Moon Rising (good thing). At the very least, the final time they seemed to be taking any real chances/doing anything particular unpredictable.

fuck yeah. it features rafael toral, even

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Sunday, 9 November 2014 02:18 (five years ago) link

a few 'karen revisted' -type outros on this album, loose and sprawl-y

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Sunday, 9 November 2014 02:27 (five years ago) link

the worst thing about this record is the cover art which is cheap and lame looking

akm, Sunday, 9 November 2014 17:26 (five years ago) link

inevitable critical reappraisal

Brent Dicrescenzo has already reappraised it: http://www.timeout.com/chicago/things-to-do/i-gave-sonic-youth-a-0-0-rating-on-pitchfork

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 9 November 2014 17:34 (five years ago) link

I'm a little ambivalent about this album. I think it displays great ideas that are not always fully realized (or that are sometimes bogged down by crappy poetry:P). I agree that it seems like the last time they really challenged themselves, in this case by trying to integrate ideas from out improv and the avant-garde electronica of that time into their songs. The way they played with polymetre in "Free City Rhymes" was pretty unique for them, and in some ways more challenging than what they did on "Rain on Tin", which I also love. I'd still rank that as one of their best songs.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 9 November 2014 17:45 (five years ago) link

Ha, just put it on, loved FCR, and turned it off partway through "Renegade Princess".

It really is but... you could easily download the decent-sounding boot for free even about a month ago. (I think it was you who shared it here?) I imagine the sound is better on this but it would have to be pretty pristine to justify paying $14 USD. A lot of these live shows they're releasing officially now really are great but I'm having trouble swallowing how much they are charging.

OK, this is pretty pristine tbf.
