the front bottoms

thread dedicated to my favorite band whom others will potentially find annoying or unnecessary but i looooooove them. they are often compared to the mountain goats which i don't get at all except in that it is a dude playing acoustic guitar with lyrics that convey a very individual perspective. i've included them in the emo/pop-punk thread too bc of the bands they tend to tour with, but they don't really fit there either. their new album, going grey is excellent, as was their last one back on top. i love these records bc the production is pretty slick but the instrumental palette is so specifically limited (a lot of the electric guitar tones are, afaict, a distorted acoustic) that it still essentially sounds homemade

This is one of the most disgusting band names going right now

it's definitely not a great band name

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 13 October 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link

I mean propagandhi are possibly my favorite working rock band and their name has always been the worst so I'm not about to complain

Gonna finally dig into these guys with the new one

I will be happy to listen to this band when they change their name to basically anything else.

two other songs from the new record

if the rest of the record is up to this standard, it's gonna be back on top-level if not better

huh, this might be better than back on top

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 21 August 2020 14:22 (three years ago) link

"jerk" is just delightful. the arrangements are fuller than ever and full of weird artifacts. the best they've ever sounded on record

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 21 August 2020 14:34 (three years ago) link

it made me realize in retrospect what was wrong with going grey, the songs feel less energetic and more artificial, written to a grid. ("bae" is still the best front bottoms song)

attn simon: after not really being able to take in the killers record, i listened to this twice in a row instead. recommended

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 21 August 2020 23:32 (three years ago) link

yeah I gave it a listen earlier today and it sounded really good, lots of appealing filigree

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 21 August 2020 23:52 (three years ago) link

This is really good. Think I’m gonna have to spend some time with it but I think I’ll eventually like it as much as Talon or BoT
