I made an AI bot listen to 30 hours of Greta Van Fleet, so it could write a Greta Van Fleet song.

Unfortunately, just one hour in, it secretly wrote code to self-destruct and is no longer with us

So I'm listening to Monuments, the latest album from a Icelandic trio The Vintage Caravan that is also very indebted to bands Like Zeppelin and Cream, but it's really good! It's more baffling to me that Greta Van Fleet is so huge when there are actual bands doing the retro classic rock thing in a much more competent manner, it's not like folks into old school sounding rock are starved for choices.

Surely the only reason GVF are big is because there is somebody behind them with shittons of money to throw at marketing/promo, no?

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Friday, 14 May 2021 16:41 (two years ago) link

Sure, that's probably part of why they had a huge start at such a young age, but that only goes so far these days and they seem to be getting more popular.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 May 2021 16:47 (two years ago) link

Vintage Caravan is definitely better, also they are in that vein but they have modern elements that make if feel less like cosplay, there's elements of metal/hard rock that occured after the 70s in there at least

That's true, but I can imagine them scratching a similar itch for people hungry for "real rock" or whatever.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 May 2021 17:55 (two years ago) link

definitely - i just meant that's a (one of) the reasons they are better, but overall they could fill the same market

they are like 5x better players too

Just checked them out, pretty decent - they don't seem to have the melodramatic 'epic' thing going on like GVF do, however risibly, which I guess some people lap up.

chap, Friday, 14 May 2021 18:25 (two years ago) link

Yeah, maybe that OTT-ness is exactly what people love about GVF, I dunno.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 May 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

GVF are more like premature ejaculation though, the shit doesn't pop when it's supposed to

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Friday, 14 May 2021 19:36 (two years ago) link

because the songs and playing aren't good enough

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 14 May 2021 19:45 (two years ago) link

the AI-generated 70s rock dis upthread was pretty much the best way to explain it, because yes, these all sound like chords that belong in this kind of song, the melodies are melodies, this sounds OF the era, but something sounds.....off about it, like no human made it

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Friday, 14 May 2021 19:48 (two years ago) link

The song titles are totally "Talk to Transformer".

I was talking with a friend yesterday about bands that are already out touring, one of whom is Steel Panther, which led me to the conclusion that GVF: '70s Classic Rock::Steel Panther: '80s Hair Metal.

blue whales on ambient (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:58 (two years ago) link

But Steel Panther are in on the joke, no?

chap, Sunday, 23 May 2021 16:37 (two years ago) link

Yeah, but a big part of '80s Hair Metal <is> the joke, while GVF have really taken the same way to the more pretentious, humorless parts of '70s Rock.

blue whales on ambient (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 23 May 2021 16:46 (two years ago) link

Steel Panther is a totally different thing though. The main members of that band were all born in the 1960s. Most of them were on the fringes of the actual scene towards the end of hair metal. This is not a tribute to some era they never lived through, it's guys who never quite made it figuring out how to do the stuff they used to play straight as a sort of ironic/tribute thing.

I looked at the wiki and the original drummer was playing w/SP and David Lee Roth at the same time, now he's in Korn. If you are getting gigs for DLR or Korn you are a total fucking pro. Listening now and these guys mop the floor with Greta Van Fleet as musicians.

Aside from the lyrics being over the top and "funny" (air quotes mine), these are definitely solid to good hair metal songs that would have fit in to the era. Greta Van Fleet would have been laughed at in the 70s, imagine them getting absolutely destroyed sandwiched between Rush and Uriah Heep or some bill like that.

Satchel (guitarist for Steel Panther) is an outright virtuoso.

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Monday, 24 May 2021 14:44 (two years ago) link

he was actually a guitar instructor in the 90s who played alongside Paul Gilbert in some side projects.

I saw Steel Panther live once, the show was not entirely my thing because half the show was shitty covers, but he played a guitar solo that was pretty amazing and at one point he was playing Iron Man while playing the kick drum at the same time with his right foot.

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Monday, 24 May 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link

ah interesting, that makes sense he's part of that guitar institute/berklee axis

vocalist was on LA Guns for their Wasted EP in 1998, that was it. this really was his first big break I think.

"It’s just something we’ll never be a part of contributing to. The loud minority will never speak for the quiet majority. That’s something Joe Bonamassa mentioned to me once, and I believe it’s pretty accurate.”

“Art is supposed to elicit strong reactions, isn’t it?” Jake Kiszka asks rhetorically.

Being called a pack of cosplaying dweebs is exactly like the first performance of The Rites of Spring.

My greatest influence is not Jimmy Page, it's all the people who wrote the songs that Led Zeppelin plagiarized in the first place.

Age of Machine is a nearly seven-minute-long cosmic doozy

You know, if the band was called Cosmic Doozy, I think I would dislike them less.

Critics are hard to press, in particular to the Zeppelin reference, which we’re humbled by. We’re honored by that affiliation, but again there’s a point within factions of society that are drawn to ignorant criticism.

I, uh, can't say I noticed those blues influences in the guitar playing on GVF songs.

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Thursday, 3 June 2021 14:59 (two years ago) link

one month passes...

It hit me that the main thing with this band is that they just don't have songs. Their songs are not memorable or good. Everything else is actually ok and would be just fine if they had good songs - yes the singer would still be absurd and yes the guitar player would be a sub-par imitation of a cliche, but the band plays well overall and the guy can, in some sense, sing. No songs man. To paraphrase something I heard a drunk music industry hasbeen say "They've got guns but no bullets."
