lol, Maura. was the crowd unironically enthusiastic about Rebecca, or or did they recognize her as a joke/meme? the average 12-year-old probably isn't aware of her origin story and just thinks of her as another internet star.

someone should embed themself in a bunch of these people's fandoms for a year, following all their fan accounts, watching all their livestreams, attending all their meetups and DigiTours, and ultimately writing a book/thinkpiece about their struggle to grasp the appeal of vapid social media content creators. like a shitty version of that Carl Wilson book

Austin Jones arrested on child pornography charges

YouTube star Austin Jones, 24, was arrested on Monday in Chicago on child pornography charges, the Associated Press reports. Jones, whose pop music channel has more than 500,000 subscribers, allegedly used social media to urge two underage female friends to send him sexually explicit videos of themselves.

Jones is known for posting acapella and acoustic covers of popular songs by artists ranging from Panic! At the Disco to Justin Bieber, and has a fanbase that is primarily teenage girls, according to the complaint. More than 5 million people have watched his most popular video, an acapella cover of “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance.”

Both of the victims allegedly expressed reservations about making the videos for Jones, and Victim A repeatedly told him that she was only 14, the complaint states. However, Jones continued to encourage them to record the videos, telling each of the girls what to wear and what to say, in addition to directing them to perform sex acts as “try outs.”

The complaint states that Jones told Victim B, “I seriously shouldn’t be talking to you,” before telling her in an online chat that he was trying to help her understand his detailed instructions. “I know you’re trying your hardest to prove you’re my biggest fan,” Jones allegedly told Victim B. “And I don’t want to have to find someone else.”

Pretty weird how like 3 or 4 of those youtubers were on Hank and John Green's DFTBA record label, with accompanying reponses to these situations from Hank and John. I've been familiar with a number of their projects (for instance, Crash Course). But I had no idea until now that they had a record label, much less a record label for youtube stars who every couple of years seem to solicit minors for nudes or similar scandals.

Mackenzie Ziegler - Monsters (aka Haters)

Former "Dance Moms" star Mackenzie Ziegler is two-timing a music producer by bailing on performances and record sessions, and working with another producer on the side ... according to a lawsuit.

Kismet Music is going after 13-year-old Mackenzie and her mom, Melissa Gisoni ... saying they breached their 2014 deal.

In the docs, Kismet says when it signed Mackenzie -- who has more than a million YouTube followers -- she agreed to "deliver technically and commercially satisfactory records." In exchange, Kismet would try to secure a recording contract and distribution deal for her.

The producers say Mackenzie and her mom didn't seem to have any issues with the contract when they were cashing checks associated with music released under the deal -- but in 2016 something changed. According to the suit, Mackenzie started skipping recording sessions and meetings -- and when Kismet tried to contact her, at least 14 times ... radio silence.

Maddie Ziegler's kid sister is also working with another producer, a clear violation of her exclusivity deal with Kismet ... according to the suit.

Kismet is suing for 15% of Mackenzie's net profits under the deal.

Haschak Sisters - When A Girl Likes A Boy

I like the '90s slowjam vibe of this one. it's basically what you'd get if Paris Strother wrote and produced a track for Ark Music Factory:

Like our music? We would LOVE to connect with you online and let you know when we upload future videos! If you like THIS music video and want to help spread the word, it's easy! Simply LIKE, FAVORITE, COMMENT and SHARE this video with YOUR friends on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram! That really helps a lot!

So has this thread just taken over from the rolling worst music thread then? I dunno, some of these might even be good, not going to check, youtube remembers this stuff.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 10 July 2017 22:07 (one year ago) Permalink

those last two Haschak Sisters songs are solid guilty pleasures, but they probably aren't good enough to justify the horseshit you'll end up with in your recommended list. tbh they aren't 100% in the spirit of this thread, since they're professional singers with a heavy social media presence rather than instagram stars awkwardly dabbling in music.

some of these songs are intentionally awful, aren't they? a lot of social media stars (or their parents/managers) seem to realize that their target demographics thrive on drama and shade, and their songs are carefully crafted to incite an onslaught of roasts and reaction videos, which will ultimately drive views and subscriptions (as well as lucrative collaborations with their roasters, who probably all belong to the same network). the outpouring of hate will only make their fans more devoted and cultlike as they struggle to defend their idols' honor. kids like the 'Marilyn Monroe' girl are probably too young to realize they're being exploited in such an underhanded way, but I'm sure their parents are considerate enough to at least prepare them for the hate ("you just have to let the death threats roll off you. you still want us to buy you that Tesla for your 15th birthday, right?").

Tana Mongeau

Like traditional celebs, famous YouTubers, like Tana Mongeau aren’t immune to being accused of doing problematic things—in this case, allegedly filming the body of a person who died of overdose.

Though Mongeau’s erroneous decision to film the deceased person predates Logan Paul’s infamous controversy, fellow YouTubers unearthed these accusations only recently. YouTuber iNabber was one of the first people to reveal Mongeau’s video from October 2017.

In iNabber’s video, he dissects Mongeau’s now-deleted vlog, entitled “FOUND A DEAD OVERDOSED MAN (LIVE FOOTAGE): STORYTIME.” While the title alone seems like it could prove that Mongeau exploited a deceased man for views, she could’ve easily used the title as clickbait. Unfortunately, iNabber shows the full-length of Mongeau’s video (at the 1:45 mark), and the contents are disturbing.

At the 4:29 mark of iNabber’s coverage, he highlights the recovered footage where Mongeau allegedly filmed the body of a deceased man. While iNabber censors this sensitive material, he claims that Mongeau didn’t blur out the body in her OG vlog. “I personally had to censor that because Tana didn’t censor the body,” iNabber explains. After Mongeau allegedly recorded the dead body, she spent the remainder of her video focusing on herself and how finding a deceased person put a damper on her day. Shortly after Mongeau also allegedly filmed the deceased man’s friend (who was just informed of his death), Mongeau says, “This would only happen to us. Only we would wanna have a nice beach day and then have to like save a dead guy.”

^actually a pretty good song, but if you've gone from producing some of the hottest techno bangers of 1992 to penning album tracks for Britney to producing songs for instagram stars, then you have some explaining to do

Chicken Girls = a vehicle for LA stage kids (90% of this thread) to gain clout by associating with slightly more famous LA stage kids. pretty sure most of these people are aspiring singers, but I won't flood this thread with examples
