xxpost I think there's a lot of very obvious stuff that's still unnominated (e.g. my shocked realization that 'Come Back to Me' was missing until my previous post).

Not sure if it counts as R&B (RYM lists it as Hi-NRG), but it is awesome:

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Friday, 21 April 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link

I see people are nominating Kid Creole tracks, which wouldn't have occurred to me for some reason. But consideration of the Ze discography may have just made the nominating and voting an even more problematic endeavor for me.

Was about to nominate some Prince songs in honor of the day and just realized we already have 62 (not counting offshoots). This is going to be rough.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Saturday, 22 April 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

I have already decided that the way I'm gonna do my ballot is to make a non-Prince ballot, see where I'm at, and then fill in as many Prince songs as there are slots remaining. It's really the only way to keep my ballot nothing but Prince.

Ohhhh shit, I didn't realize that Josh in Chicago's post upthread was just a radio playlist. I'd been ctrl+f-ing like a good boy and excluding that stuff from my nominations. More work to do, I see.

(xp)

I can include those tracks in the list, but I don't think all of them are from the 80's.
Old Lunch, if you want to nominate tracks from that list, just copy/paste the lines as they are. For me it's easy to format the lines the way I want them.

Oh, and I made a mistake yesterday; I must have thought it was Saturday already. You have about 36 hours left now.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:45 (seven years ago) link

I grant that there are important differences between r'n'b and dance-pop but Madonna was always comfortably in the former camp to me conventional wisdom be damned! Wasn't confident enough to actually nominate her though.

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:47 (seven years ago) link

Madonna - Crazy for You

I love this song, but I don't hear any R&B in it. Other Madonna tracks, yes, but this one sounds more touchy to me than anything.

*torchy

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Saturday, 22 April 2017 16:58 (seven years ago) link

Then again, shut my mouth:

The song reached number two on the Adult Contemporary Singles and 80 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Saturday, 22 April 2017 17:00 (seven years ago) link

Thanks, ArchCarrier, I think I plucked what I needed from Josh's list.

Yeah, I wavered on some of those less overtly R&B tracks but I figure the voting will ultimately decide what really counts.

Sorry, a couple of typos there, here's the correct titles:

Taana Gardner - No Frills
Weeks & Co. - Go with the Flow

Tuomas, Saturday, 22 April 2017 20:09 (seven years ago) link

Jimmy "Bo" Horne - Spank

And this one shouldn't be on my list, as it's from 1978.

Tuomas, Saturday, 22 April 2017 20:11 (seven years ago) link

Mmmmmm, I might have to take mild umbrage with the Patrice Rushen, ArchCarrier. The single was released in '79 (and its attendant album was released in late '79, so I'd suspect the same of the single, although I can't find its actual release date), and the info I have is that it didn't chart until 1980. It's iffy, I admit, and yours is the final ruling, but just wanted to put it out there because it's a fantastic song.

Sort-of like a Hershey's kiss, only it's an anus (Old Lunch), Saturday, 22 April 2017 21:02 (seven years ago) link

Well it ranked top 20 in the previous poll so it's a bit redundant to include it here.

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 22 April 2017 21:09 (seven years ago) link

"careless whisper" was already nominated as credited to george michael (as it was for the uk release)

(i mention this just b/c this case might be harder to detect automatically than other duplicate-nominations)

Steel City - Kannattiko muuttaa yhteen
