WELCOME TO THE JUNGLIST MASSIVE, WE'VE GOT FUN N GAMES: 2017 Rolling Drum and Bass/Jungle/Liquid/Neurofunk/170

This was fun last year, let's do it again.

The new Klute album Read Between the Lines is fantastic, it came out last Friday and covers a lot of ground stylistically, as Klute usually does.

The Telomic EP Compelled is a fun listen, a little atmospheric.

I don't think you can listen to dnb in 2017 and avoid hearing "Trunk" by Alibi and MC Coppa. It's everywhere, but I still listen to it on repeat for half an hour once or twice a week.

DRS, Patife, and Vangeliez put out "I Will" early enough to ensure that it gets constant rotation this summer. If the last DJ on the last night of Sun and Bass doesn't close with that tune I'm going to have Questions for them.

New albums by Mr Joseph and Jam Theives that I've yet to check out, plus an EP of VIPs by Digital and a new Phace EP. Good year so far.

Anyone have any recommendations yet?

ASC continues fine run of form. At the very fringes of the genre, though...

the article don, Saturday, 8 April 2017 01:08 (four years ago) link

^oh yes, what a sound and what an era. Dominic Angus is a badman.

the article don, Sunday, 9 April 2017 23:19 (four years ago) link

yes, having lived through it i have a real soft spot for that era and i really doubt i will hear anything this year that affects me in the same way

that said i'm always down for new stuff from cosmic bridge

the late great, Sunday, 9 April 2017 23:30 (four years ago) link

this is interesting

the late great, Monday, 10 April 2017 03:02 (four years ago) link

I like that Yally track, dark and spooky. Great minimal breaks too.
The ASC tune is cool but probably not a dancefloor filler.

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Monday, 10 April 2017 17:07 (four years ago) link

I'm surprised to actually really like the new Goldie tune "Prism". It came up on spotify without my knowing who it was by and I was surprised. (And it sent me into a Goldie rabbithole for a couple of hours... There's a great e-comp on Spotify that gathers all of his early Ruffige stuff on Reinforced.)

agent jah, Monday, 10 April 2017 18:11 (four years ago) link

haha i am listening to that spotify comp at this very second

adam, Monday, 10 April 2017 18:13 (four years ago) link

That Yally is a good find. Wee hint of Omio Trio Volume 2 in there!

Just heard a track from a new Calibre album. Does this guy put out three albums every year , or what? I thought Shelflife 4 was his last, but Spotify has two more between, unless there's a different Calibre with Diane Charlemagne on a track.

Second release on Cry Baby Records, I really liked their Dan White release from last year. This would probably sit well next to Yally.

MikoMcha, Thursday, 27 April 2017 05:10 (four years ago) link

Alix swaps his nuclear hip hop concrete style of late, which has been quite fun, example below...

For something in an altogether more traditional rolling liquid funk style. Nobody does this better except maybe Mr Calibre above...

I'm a little surprise I hadn't already heard about a new Perez/Spectrasoul EP, but good looking out article don.

I heard a track in a mix that I liked by Dirtbag, I think the name was Blue Water or something, but it hasn't been released or even signed yet. Posting this here to remind myself to look out for it >.>

Generation 3 EP by Commix. One of the most complete dnb EPs I’ve heard in forever. 4 varied tracks, all excellent but this is a belter. Slight vibes of Commix’s own “Emily’s Smile” and the long forgotten “Future Realities Part 2” by Dave Wallace.

commix vs fabric is easily one of my favourite of the series.

I really enjoyed these:

toby, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 19:19 (ten months ago) link

I don't have specialist ears for this kind of music, but the following comp demanded a Top Ten slot this year:

Black Riot
Early Jungle, Rave and Hardcore
Soul Jazz Records
...Featuring classic and seminal tracks from the likes of Levictus and Krome &Time, alongside a host of rare and little-known ragga & junglist hardcore tunes from the likes of Babylon Timewarp’s hypnotic Durban Poison, Rhythm for Reasons’ mad ‘The Smokers Rhythm’, The Freaky rave-y breakbeat sound of ‘Time and Age,’ Trip One’s super dark ‘Snowball’ and loads more!

Expect super heavy basslines, equally heavy twisted Amen drum loops, even heavier ragga vocals! Original jungle style - roots and culture - from the earliest days of drum and bass.

Included with the album is a free limited-edition graphic mini-novel “Black Riot: The Mysterons save Planet Earth from the Xatheroid Angels.” This is the third collaboration between Soul Jazz Records and writer/illustrator Paulo Parisi, the highly respected author of graphic books on Jean Michel Basquiat and John Coltrane.

This new graphic story continues the story of black electronic dance music – this time set around the birth of Jungle and continues onwards from Soul Jazz’s earlier ‘Invasion of the Killer Mysterons’ (Jamaican electronic Dub, co-compiled by Kevin Martin (The Bug)) and Mysterons Invade the Jackin’ Zone (about Chicago Acid & Experimental House).

I'm enjoying those ASC tracks, but d&b tracks are so long, lol. I checked the clock after listening for over 20 min...still only on track 3. I seriously don't understand why they need to be 7+ min.

brimstead, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 23:07 (two weeks ago) link

Right? It's almost a weightless feel, quite sparse.

But the late great was on to Coco Bryce back in 2017, right around the time I was thinking that all new music was sounding very much the same as what was popular ten years before, and I should mostly just listen to lots of old disco and reggae etc.

coco bryce brings sick amen revivalism

― the late great, Saturday, April 15, 2017 4:46 PM (four years ago)

So yes I do in fact prefer revival of thirty year old music styles to ten year old music styles. There's still a lot of unexplored potential in jungle tho (compared to house at least).
