thread for being drunk and listening to pile, not being drunk and listening to pile also ok

imo these guys are the heirs of silkworm in a really awesome, indirect way, guitars and drums just swerving around the vocals.

new album out on friday, streaming here, as good a place to start as any, maybe it's their best who knows http://www.stereogum.com/1931708/stream-pile-a-hairshirt-of-purpose/music/album-stream/

my favorite pile song:

good band. the new one sounds more depressed/less angry than the last one.
i don't know about the silkworm comparison. maybe the joel r.l. phelps songs.

two weeks pass...

saw them last night, "dogs" and "texas" work really well in the set, new album has grown on me, was not drunk but still had a time. also I think they might be my favorite current band without any harmonies or backing vocals?

Is the superlative new album being discussed in another thread or...?

Vernon Locke, Tuesday, 21 May 2019 01:34 (three months ago) link

i like them a lot, they definitely scratch a very specific musical itch for me. i need to listen to the new one more but i really liked the one long song ("hiding places").

i still haven't heard the new one!!!

More people need to (re)listen to this album. Myself included.

shit, i feel bad that i waited so long to listen to their best album

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 10 June 2019 20:26 (three months ago) link

usually a pile album has a few slow, stirring, stunning songs punctuated by songs that are pretty much just somersaulting riffs, but there's not only the sense on this record that they've gotten the balance right (cf. "on a bigger screen") but that they're even pushing outside of their previous modes into new ideas of atmosphere ("other moons"). also all the songs are good

also lmao at the song title "the soft hands of stephen miller"

*listens to “a labyrinth with no center” on repeat* this is the best indie rock band of all time

this is the best indie rock band of all time
ikr

maybe/probably an indication of the state of indie rock c. 2019 but this album, this band should be getting more attention imo

Vernon Locke, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 01:10 (three months ago) link

lmao brad I posted "...Stephen Miller" to the US Politics thread a few months back cause it had just come out and he was back in the news

I haven't given the album a proper airing yet but I will

I'm assuming this popped back up on yr radar today due to subconscious Baroness association?

Simon H., Tuesday, 11 June 2019 01:13 (three months ago) link

yes it totally did lmao

the albums take similar courses!

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 01:18 (three months ago) link

It's exceptionally annoying the vinyl is 2xLP but plays at 45 RPM. Like, WHY???

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Sunday, 23 June 2019 08:20 (two months ago) link

Yes, this is good.
