Just to the left of the Steve Reich is the LP version of the NME cassette comp called “The Sugarhill Groove” (this one: https://www.discogs.com/release/532187-Various-The-Sugarhill-Groove) and next to that is “More Tales From The City” by the Band of Holy Joy.

The photo is from the ‘My record collection’ feature in Q from 1990. Quote below may help identify some of them.

He sure ain't kidding, as lapping his ankles are treasures ranging from Otis Rush, Snooks Eaglin and Aaron Neville to Big Black, Robyn Hitchcock, Glen Branca ("I like discordancy"). The Band Of Holy Joy ("Ha!")m and Sinead O'Connor.

I wonder if that's where he first went on record as being a fan of Songs About Fucking?

Many adorable things about that photo, but I especially love the janky-ass Ikea unit with the components on a shelf befitting sitting on the floor to listen to records. Like he got the lease suddenly, and bought the shelves from the previous occupant so as to start spinning records ASAP, and still hasn't gotten around to buying a chair. Landlord window treatments. I like to think of Plant having a little barebones pied-a-terre with nothing but stacks of records and an electric kettle.

two months pass...

Here we are again, I was browsing Rightmove and came across this interesting collection (apologies but I cannot seem to get the image to paste directly to ILX)

The only one I can identify off the bat is Suzanne Vega's 'Solitude Standing'.

The one with the skull on the top row is Archie Shepp - The Magic of Ju-Ju.

Two others I recognise are Marvin Gaye - I Want You and Annette Peacock - I'm the One.

Danny Brown - U Know What I'm Sayin?: Second row down, first on the left
Suzanne Vega - Solitude Standing: Second row down, third from the left

Third fow, fourth from left: Leon Ware - Rockin' You Eternally

Very impressed with all these identifications. The Suzanne Vega LP seems like an odd duck amongst all the other material.

Josefa, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 02:37 (two years ago) link

I thought bottom left was De La Soul "Eye Know" but seems not to match.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 19 January 2022 03:06 (two years ago) link

this is the library of a serious breakhead, that's what the Suzanne Vega has in common with the rest

Yandex reverse image search is getting a few of these:
Top row third from left: The Rolf Kühn Group – Total Space
Second row fourth: Saint-Preux - Le Piano Sous La Mer
Third row sixth: The Family Dogg – A View From Rowland's Head

Anyone else mad that the bottom row, third from the left isn't Tres Hombres? The green was the first thing I latched onto, but a second glance confirmed absolutely not. Now I just want to know!

peace, man, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 17:45 (two years ago) link

Green one was actually the first one that felt familiar. Thought it might be Willis Alan Ramsey, which would be weird, but no.

Which fits with the owner being a sampling type - it has some great early examples of sticking vocals through a moog filter and decent drums in places.
