new queer, LA-based pop trio who's receiving a notable amount of attention. you can hear a good amount of 80s influence in their music (which i know some are understandably getting tired of), but they're highly worth giving a shot. their debut album is released tomorrow:

Had some periods of repeat listening to these. Hope the album does the same.

i'm getting strong HAIM vibes on my first listen

MUNA is kinda like the icier, more insular fraternal twin sister to HAIM's warm, mellow counterpart (even stating their respective band names in all-caps)

also more 80s power ballad guitar solos here

(even stating their respective band names in all-caps)
isn't this just a very commonplace (and annoying) attempt to be noticed on a crowded internet? I feel like half my itunes is shouting at me

these songs are fine but nothing really stands out beyond her voice which is kinda odd for this sort of thing, like the way she says "loudspeakuhhhh" makes for a pretty strange hook. the harmonizer? on the all the vocals in winterbreak feels odd too

I have a heard time taking this band seriously because "muna" is the most common Finnish slang word for cock.

This is pretty much my favorite new band. "I Know a Place" was my favorite song of 2016, and it's torturing me that I have to be in meetings and haven't been able to listen to the whole album yet.

Add "I Know A Place" to the hypothetical mausoleum of unimpeachable tears-at-the-disco classics
― monotony, Monday, 6 February 2017 05:10 (seven years ago) link
they borrow melodies from a few ILM love-or-hate-thems as well - the chorus in "Loudspeaker" bears similarities to the 1975's "Heart Out", and there's a vague resemblance also between "Crying On The Bathroom Floor"'s verses and Robyn's "None Of Dem"

but mostly i'm surprised that this thread isn't 1000 posts long given its documented obsessions w/ HAIM and Shura etc
― monotony, Monday, 6 February 2017 05:14 (seven years ago) link
hope this doesn't harsh anyone's mellow, but the choruses of "i know a place" and matchbox twenty's "if you're gone" are eerily similar

Songs are very nice, but the singer's enunciation is strange.

These other songs are just meh, but I really love "I Know A Place" and how it weirdly reminds me of Madonna's "Vogue". Obvious echo: "I know a place where you can get away, they call it dancefloor", plus the first few verses might as well be "look around, everywhere you turn is heartache".

Love this album. Even grown to love the weird enunciation after almost turning off after the first "surproysed" on the first spin through

I’m pretty sure this band is bad but I love them

New album out June 24. First single is fantastic (and maybe a little HAIM-y?).

The advance tracks are promising an amazing album, but until then, here's their Britney cover from this new gay romcom:

Just learned about this group from a YouTube bass cover. All I know so far is this song, One That Got Away, but it fucking rules.

This band's name looks like it could stand for Municipal Urban Navigation Authority. Aw man, my Corolla's in the shop so I'll have to catch a MUNA bus to the show tonight.

Saw them supporting Boygenius in the summer and they were fucking great. Need to check out some of their records.

I enjoy their podcast, Gayotic. It's not exclusively about gaiety. It's just like, here's your weekly fun hang with Muna.
