It's a fantastic album, one of his best (up there with 'Diversions').
Jungle/dnb died 16, 17 years ago*. Metalheadz, Fabio, Grooverider, Optical & Rush, Doc Scott: I commend them for plowing on, but it's sad really. *Nothing* of note, nothing evolutionary, nothing forward thinking - let alone brash futuristic, a core element of the genre - has come out since 2000 or so.
The only to in some way do justice, and use the breaks and synths of jungle past, is what Gamble does so masterfully. He doesn't do 'nods', but echoes and mutates what was so great about it and incorporates it into a sound palette of now.
* Disclaimer: I was a teenage junglist.

I think I like Mnestic Pressure even more than Diversions, it's definitely one of my favorite albums of the year

What is this year's big art-rock album? I feel like I'm missing something - a Let England Shake, a Moon Shaped Pool?

Don't know if it is art-rock but it sounds big (and fantastic): Oxbow's Thin Black Duke.

No mention of the Errorsmith album, Superlative Fatigue? Android techno with a dancehall riddim vibe. It's pretty special.
― FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 10:02 (six years ago) link
yes! it's a great album! only found it last week so i'm guessing it's newly released or i'm very behind haha
― nxd, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 10:03 (six years ago) link
Fits nicely into my current obsession with experimental riddim - Equiknoxx, Still, Palmistry etc
― FREEZE! FYI! (dog latin), Tuesday, 5 December 2017 10:07 (six years ago) link
the Errorsmith album is good except the last track which is garbage but if you can get the chance you absolutely should go see him DJ, I saw him in January and it was INCREDIBLE, just so much energy and looseness and humour

Think I saw somewhere he's playing round my neck so I'll keep an eye out

bah.'The Right Way to Do Year End Lists Is in Alphabetical Order'
In anticipation of the ILM poll (starting shortly!), this playlist includes all the available tracks on this thread, organized roughly chronologically in order of mention:
ILM's 2017 Rolling Favorite Thread Spotify Playlist

moka, not sure why you'd place Today over voices if it's down to what's best, but YMMV
― In a slipshod style (Ross), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:21 (six years ago) link
I’m still unsure about many of these not my final list. Almost every artist in there has another song or two which I can gladly replace. I have my own stupid rule of only one song per artist though... I might end changing some of these in the following qeeks.

admire yer commitment Moka, tho
― In a slipshod style (Ross), Thursday, 14 December 2017 06:45 (six years ago) link
one song per artist is not stupid tbh
I wish the 77 had that rule tbh
― Simon H., Thursday, 14 December 2017 13:09 (six years ago) link
Didn't know there was a new Errorsmith album, thanks for the tip DL
― brimstead, Friday, 15 December 2017 17:40 (six years ago) link
I do too, actually. At least as far as the rollout goes (highest voted song by the artist is their de facto single appearance), but people would riot.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 17:49 (six years ago) link
Especially since I'm guessing the # of nominated tracks and albums goes up every year with the hyperavailability offered by streaming services
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 17:51 (six years ago) link
I wrote in some other thread the same proposal. 77 songs, no repeating artists and maybe acknowledge the next two most voted songs from artists with more than one song in the real top 77. when the rollout is over post the 'real' top 77 with repeating artists. In 2014 we had like 5 Taylor Swift songs and in 2015 4 CRJ and 3 Grimes songs. This year I think will be a tad more surprising but we'll still get 3 or more Kendrick songs in there.
I see the problem about changing the rollout and I don't really see it happening but you can't deny it would be a bit more interesting. After all the real surprises are always in the lower numbers.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:27 (six years ago) link
I propose that every year and get shouted down but imo we should take an actual vote or something
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 18:28 (six years ago) link
I'm in but someone else should do the writeup about the proposal in a poll. I suck at explaining things convincingly, specially in english.
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link
If we get two more posters in who like the idea I could draft it.
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 18:33 (six years ago) link
As ever, strongly disagree
― Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:35 (six years ago) link
Bring on all the Kendrick
― Cardi Acs (imago), Friday, 15 December 2017 18:37 (six years ago) link
include it as a question on the voting form this year, with it taking effect the following year with a majority vote
― ciderpress, Friday, 15 December 2017 19:53 (six years ago) link
Why wait a year? If it passes (which, tbh, I don't think it would), I can't imagine it would be all that difficult to adjust the rollout.
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 19:59 (six years ago) link
that works too, I just think wrapping it into the actual process is the only way to ensure that everyone who cares sees it in time
― ciderpress, Friday, 15 December 2017 20:01 (six years ago) link
Yeah, I think that's a good approach.
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link
I am not in favor of the change fwiw, especially since it opens up a lot of grey areas wrt collabs and guest appearances
― ciderpress, Friday, 15 December 2017 20:05 (six years ago) link
OK, so no repeat appearances according to top billing. How many tracks have popular artists sharing equal billing?
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link
Guys, this change ain't gonna happen. It's one of the flaws of a consensus poll. If a person votes for a song, that vote should count.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 23:14 (six years ago) link
the vote would count, on the "pure points" 77.
― Simon H., Friday, 15 December 2017 23:15 (six years ago) link
Trust me, I'm in favor of a more diverse rollout, but it is what it is.
― Johnny Fever, Friday, 15 December 2017 23:18 (six years ago) link
i also support this move, the nay-sayers have no argument
― ogmor, Saturday, 16 December 2017 02:10 (six years ago) link
lol wtf kind of argument is this? if it's a flawed system let's fix it! we don't have to lobby fucking congress.
― Simon H., Saturday, 16 December 2017 02:57 (six years ago) link
ha, you're talking to the guy who runs the system!
― Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Saturday, 16 December 2017 03:29 (six years ago) link
lol I'm bad at paying attention to who does what, but still, "this is how we've always done it" doesn't cut it for me idk
