Is there a Noname thread?

Mods please destroy if redundant, but searching turned up no discussion of Noname, which I find hard to believe. Telefone was one of the best releases this year for me. Anyway - I was searching in order to ask, what's the story with the released version losing the Nina Simone sample on "Freedom Interlude"? That was kind of like an emotional peak in the album for me, now ... gone.

What relased version? Afaik there is only a digital version? Would love to buy on vinyl if it ever gets physically released.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Tuesday, 27 December 2016 23:18 (five years ago) link

This is my (roughly) #3 album of the year, so I hope it does well in our poll.

Pretty sure there isn't. She's no Lil Peep I guess

albvivertine, Tuesday, 27 December 2016 23:47 (five years ago) link

I originally had the free-download version from the hotnewhiphop website (which I am pretty sure was its "official" version) but I bought the lossless version from Bandcamp (https://nonameraps.bandcamp.com/album/telefone) because I like the album so much. The free version had the sample, the Bandcamp version doesn't.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Tuesday, 27 December 2016 23:53 (five years ago) link

All sorts of uncleared samples show up on the free versions of things. Once an artist starts charging, they have to cut some things, usually.

Yeah I assumed - such a pity to lose that bit though.

attention vampire (MatthewK), Wednesday, 28 December 2016 00:21 (five years ago) link

I'll probably put it in my top 3 so hope it does good as well.

Telefone is a beautiful album and it will place highly on my ballot.

I'll probably find some space for "Yesterday," too, which hits a strange emotional bittersweet-spot. That chorus rings around my head all the time

Stupid question perhaps but will this ever get a proper vinyl release? I know “vinyl me please” made 1,500 copies but they sell for over $130 and I’m not sure if it counts as an official release.

Really really good. Hopefully everybody listening to this has heard Saba's 'Care For Me' from this year? They have some aesthetic commonalities, and obviously he's on "Ace" on 'Room 25,' but it's a nearly perfect album IMO.

Anyone found anywhere to buy this in high quality? Ended up having to buy it on Amazon digitally and the encode (around a VBR V-2 from the sound of it) is pretty poor, lots of muddy compression which is a real disservice. Wish it were on Bandcamp--not sure why she'd self-release through Amazon but not Bandcamp?

Soundslike, Saturday, 15 September 2018 01:30 (three years ago) link

Well I'm listening to a FLAC version which will be a placeholder until I can buy physical or lossless. Frequencies go up to 22k so I don't think it's a transcode.

Gorgeous record. Just what I needed this morning.

kitchen person, Sunday, 16 September 2018 14:46 (three years ago) link

Fortunately it did go up on Bandcamp on Saturday, so you can get FLAC there.

Soundslike, Monday, 17 September 2018 00:50 (three years ago) link

record does indeed sound good but does anyone else feel that her delivery, deliberate as may be, is kinda weak and make some of the lyrics a bit hard to catch? I get that it might be the main attraction that she does the twee as fuck talk flow

niels, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 09:14 (three years ago) link

It's OK not to like it, but I do.
Shit the FLAC is "name your price", what's fair? $10? $20?

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 11:20 (three years ago) link

xpost i couldn't get into Telefone and you're onto one reason why. still need to give this new one a fair shake, though

alpine static, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 16:25 (three years ago) link

Really glad to see the Saba/Noname/Zero Fatigue crew (Monte Booker, Smino, Ravyn Lenae) axis of Chicago hip-hop kinda come into their own this year. They're slightly more textural and production-attentive than the Chance/Vic Mensa OG SaveMoney guys imo, and it really appeals to the "show, don't tell" side of me (not that Noname and Saba aren't spitting really intricate stuff as well).

austinb, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 21:46 (three years ago) link

I guess you could call it spoken word
https://www.stereogum.com/2014972/noname-is-spoken-words-last-best-hope/franchises
bad headline, decent piece

niels, Thursday, 20 September 2018 11:18 (three years ago) link

Finally had some time to digest this. Telefone is one of my favorite albums of my past few years, so this one had a lot to live up to, and I think it mostly does. The new album is gorgeous and sophisticated, I still need to let the lyrics sink in a bit more, but I sometimes miss the tinker-toy beats and the brightness that marked Telefone. Maybe that’s why Window has been my favorite track in the first few passes.

Love the album though.

In light of recent allegations, I will be working to replace the cover artwork of Room 25. I do not and will not support abusers, and I will always stand up for victims and believe their stories. My heart goes out to Ellie, her family, and all survivors of abuse.

I saw the online discussion with Boots Riley earlier this week, the guy talked all over her and tried to shut down any discussion of misogyny and transphobia as urgent issues. She was not impressed.

assert (MatthewK), Thursday, 18 June 2020 23:34 (two years ago) link

i don't always agree with stuff she tweets, but Boots showed his whole transmisogynist ass in that exchange. i felt embarrassed for him and it lent some credence to my friend's take that his film was deeply transphobic.

rainforest is extremely good. played it a lot the last few days, and then was reminded of it again reading this (from chris richards of the washpost):

She brings the same sang-froid to “Rainforest,” patiently unloading her most urgent words into a bossa nova rhythm’s gentle churn. “You ain’t seen death, I can hear the blood on the moon,” she raps, casually doling out one of the most paralyzing couplets you could ever hope to hear in a song. And then, “These n----- put a flag up on it, all they do is consume/Only animal to ravage everything in its path/They turned a natural resource into a bundle of cash/Made the world anti-Black, then divided the class.”

Outraged and unflinching, it’s a lullaby and a prayer, a salvo presented as inner-monologue, a protest anthem for the inside of your skull, a hushed blast of hyper-empathy from someone who can hear the blood on the moon, the loud part quiet.
