I played a show opening for the Horrors and we had bought a dozen or so goldfish. The plan was that the live goldfish would be in champagne glasses at the front of the stage, and that during the show we would knock them into the audience. Lead singer of the Horrors heard about this and pitched a fit and the club owner wouldn't let us do it. Several members of our band were even appearing on a split 7" with him, and he still wouldn't let us go through with that plan.Of course, the goldfish all ended up in the toilet. A more dignified way to go?

looking back on that, yes i was the jerk in that scenario. not sure what it has to do with Vice but ok

Remember way back when, when we were having the original arguments about Vice and Ann Sterzinger started babbling about nigger cheese? And yet somehow a good number of people thought Vice was still about irony?

That Grass Widow review lingers in my mind every time I see a Vice article appear in my timeline. People are quick to talk about the terrible value of The Daily Mail on society but realistically Vice has had a deeper and more subversive reach with its brand of pseudo-ironic alt-right values and it continually amazes me that they've become legit and respected.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 October 2017 19:49 (six years ago) link
I hate how the influence of Vice as a writing voice is so ubiquitous now. Its easy to write "rip off my testicles" keyboard bashing rants and the tone of snark and snobbery is just so off-putting. It feels like there's no room for genuine enthusiasm and excitement or calm critique anywhere and the fact Vice is such a prominent online voice is a huge part of this.
― boxedjoy, Thursday, 19 October 2017 19:56 (six years ago) link
well, the terminology has changed
― mookieproof, Thursday, 19 October 2017 20:03 (six years ago) link
I have not really followed Momus since he stopped posting here; does he still believe Vice was subverting racism?

Just because an ideology is unpopular (in this case, rightfully so) doesn't mean you can deny it's right to exist, or it's subscribers their life, liberty, and freedom to live wherever the fuck they want.
oh man I read that comment on the thread Οὖτις just linked and took a second before scrolling down to play the "guess the poster" game

how many people who were like "no man I want small government, I'm a libertarian, I don't agree with those type of people but they can say whatever" later went full alt-right by 2016
― mh, Thursday, 19 October 2017 20:45 (six years ago) link
ugh, i never saw that thread. ann used to post on I Love Books all the time in the olden days.

xp: The only person I can think of I know who was in that zone who didn't is a friend from college who was well on his way to vanishing in a spiral of conservative orthodoxy until he came out right before his 50th birthday. (His best friend is also a libertarian type but is and has always been staunchly anti-racist over everything else, making him one of the few conservative-leaning voices in my friend circle who I don't automatically assume is arguing from a position of unexamined racism.)
