I'm gonna man up and admit that I was wrong. There's a lot I didn't get about Lil Peep. But he was good.

I'm still not going to be sitting around listening to Lil Peep, but this one is pretty and the video is poignant (as people point out in the comments, it's shot like it was already a memorial):

Idk what made me come around but there’s a certain nocturnal quality to much of his music that I can appreciate. It feels pure.

thanks for that comp deej i will def be listening later

-_- (jim in vancouver), Friday, 17 November 2017 22:25 (six years ago) link

Also I agree with deej in that grunge is the main frame of reference for most of the guitar stuff he does, at least post crybaby. Part of why I didn't like him initially, I think, is that I kind of left grunge for rap back in the day and have not been thrilled by the prospect of grunge coming back in the context of rap. But it is what it is.

Been randomly checking out some of his stuff, fully expecting to hate it, based on most descriptions I've read, but I really don't - whatever the influences (I kinda hear Beck sometimes), he did his own thing with them and it worked. RIP.

poor kid
deej just started this thread in late 2016 (which generally he's pretty on the forefront of picking up on stuff like this) and he's already gone...

Jjs piece gives me a rush of mixed emotions... it’s validating but also ridiculous lol

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 29 January 2018 18:14 (six years ago) link

Like jjs would never in a million years write a piece like that about keef but keef is the actual nexus / launch point for a lot of this generational shit, he just picked up on the white kid

I liked the linked videos of cover version, just for reminding me how much stuff there is out there, still.

i cant believe im wishing for the days when forks primary mode of interference was making endless useless playlists from people's conversations instead of hounding me w/ passive aggressive projection

yeah i gotta say overall it has made multiple threads huge bummers

fgti spinner (Spottie), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 00:39 (six years ago) link

deej, It's not passive, I actively dislike you.

your imaginary sense of ownership on very specific artists is offensive enough but it's particularly horrible when you're preening about how ahead of the curve you were for an artist who is getting a "died for the sins of his generation" treatment in GQ.

What “ownership” dumbass?? What fucking ownership? I said I liked something & made a case for it, that’s it

Saying it’s crazy how the convo went from highly controversial /trash talking to literary greats over the course of a few months doesn’t actually have anything to do with me?

You are completely projecting

And it’s passice aggressive bc you just run into every thread sniping about it in fake little asides instead of actually having a conversation

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 03:19 (six years ago) link

Not that I want a conversation just stop fronting

Saying it’s crazy how the convo went from highly controversial /trash talking to literary greats over the course of a few months doesn’t actually have anything to do with me?

you are driving the convo at the top of this thread. you started the thread and have been driving discussion about this particular artist ever since; you're like half the posts in here.

its pretty funny how quickly lil peep went from ... the convo at the top of the thread to a literal john jeremiah sullivan subject, though

this is gross because the kid is dead and the chances that this "literary great" writes about him if he's not dead are zero. that sentence did and does read to me like you're looking back on the thought and consideration you've given peep with a degree of satisfaction in that YOU HAVE BEEN PROVEN RIGHT which is fucking lame.

I'd be more inclined to consider that projection on my part if you didn't feel the need to squeeze out multi post ad hominem rants that end with "i don't even want to talk to you".

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 03:49 (six years ago) link

How is “literary greats would never write about him if he hadn’t died” not an even more fucked thing to say about a dead kid, exactly?

If he was really the steaming pile of worthless garbage described upthread his death probably wouldn’t have inspired breathless John Jeremiah Sullivan profiles, sure. But Pointing out that the dominant tone switched from critical to reverent quickly isn’t saying anything about who was “right” or “wrong” about his work

It’s odd to me that the person accused of cynicism over the dead kid is one of the people who actually enthused about his artistic output while he was alive but whatever makes you feel better for shitting up this thread with your non contributions

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 03:57 (six years ago) link

Sooo the JJS piece, too bad he didn't connect the "hairy dj" with the guy who produced his fave Peep track.

Lots of embarrassing bits in there The intro, annotating the lyrics Genius-style etc) but I thought he hit a lot of good notes too.

I agree fwiw, more amused by what it means that he even took the assignment (pitched it?)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 04:03 (six years ago) link

yo outsider here but imo it takes a dedicated deej hater to read "taking satisfaction" into that post, like i too am amazed at how quickly lil peep went from bad internet musician to subject of serious journalism and i have no stake in this at all.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 31 January 2018 04:04 (six years ago) link

imo,"the dominant tone switched from critical to reverent" entirely because the kid is dead and if that's me being cynical then i would ask where all the think pieces about his immediate contemporaries are at.

jon caramanica who wrote the glowing piece in the ny times was a fan of his before he died chief

caramanica spilled way more ink on the nothing nowhere kid (or xxx or uzi or lil pump) than he did on peep until peep died

That’s completely false. Are you talking about the huge times feature on the new rap underground where he calls peep the scene’s Kurt cobain and barely touches on xxx? Just give up forks, you’re being dumb
