I'm putting together a compilation tape for my friend Jane, and I wnat to use lots of songs with "Jane" in the title. Now, I can only come up with four:

"Lazy Line Painter Jane" - Belle and Sebastian
"Hazey Jane II" - Nick Drake
"Sweet Jane" - The Velvet Underground
"Queen Jane Approximatly" - Bob Dylan

I don't really want to use any "Mary Jane" songs, and so I'm stuck. I was thinking of staring the tape with Sweet Jane, and then ending the tape with Wreckless Eric's version of the same song, which is far slower and more reflective.

But anyway . . . help me!

Jefferson Starship, "Jane". Song's pretty bad tho

dave q, Monday, 4 November 2002 13:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeh . . . poor songs won't really cut the mustard I'm afraid. Aldo, it would be a little usefull to have ones painting Jane in a good light . . . although I suppose Lazy Line Painter Jane isn't the most complimentary song . . . .

Johnney, are you sure she's going to like this mix? I have a friend Jane who wants to go on a shooting rampage whenever she hears "Jane Says."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 4 November 2002 18:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

I know . . . I'm gonna have to vet this compilation quite carefully to make sure that nothing, how shall we say, "inappropriate" slips in! I certainly don't want her going off on a killing spree - that's not the intention at all!

Is this a friend you're trying to get rid of?

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Paul, I'm not trying to get rid of her . . . I'm trying to cement our friendship through the power of popular music. I have to admit to not hearing a lot of these songs that have popped up - and something tells me that a few af are gonna be neither mine nor Jane's cup of tea. No doubt there are a few gems in this little lot that I'm yet to hear - and they will be soon blasting out in all their analogue glory as soon as I get to download them!

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, I wasn't commenting on the quality of material that has been suggested. But listening to a mix of songs that features only your name might be a little creepy.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

Um . . . that's a good point. I didn't think of it that way.

Oh, I'm sure it'll be listened to in the spirit that it was mixed. I mean, it's just a friendly thingto do, a happy type of thing. It doesn't suggest an obsessive creepy character . . . does it?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 15:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

It might not be mentally unstable creepy. But I have an aunt named Barbara Ann who absolutely despises the Beach Boys. Granted, no song suggested so far is as potentially annoying as "Barbara Ann" by the Beach Boys, but 90 minutes of them might come close.

paul cox (paul cox), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 15:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Well, I find Barbara Ann annoying, and my name contains neither Barbara nor Ann. And none of the songs so-far mentioned (I think) just repeat "Jane" over and over in the title . . . except Sweet Jane, naturally. Correct me if I'm wrong though - as I say, a lot of these I havn't heard before!

Jane 6 - EPMD
Jane Ann & the Pumpkin - Lee Perry

Little Liza Jane - Clowns/Neville Brothers
Mary Jane - 17 Plus
Me-Jane - P.J. Harvey
Queen Jane Approximately - Bob Dylan
Sweet Jane - also by Big Tube Squeezer, Cowboy Junkies and Mott The Hoople.
