SONGS YOU HATE (by artists you love)

You knew this was coming, didn't you?

My first choice is Woodstock by Joni Mitchell.
Not only that I find it ridiculous to write THEE song on Woodstock without ever having been there. It is really her worst song, I think. It makes me understand why some people hate her.

I love Lost in the Supermarket!

"marquee and the moon", by Sloan, is really and truly awful. To make matters worse, I recently came across a Sloan cover of "This Charming Man" by the Smiths, which made me shudder.

I love "Lost in the Supermarket" too.

Maybe Leonard Cohen's "Jazz Police".

MBV's "Touched"

"She is Suffering" by the Manics. I used to be indifferent to it, but now I just want to punch it. If one could punch a song, I guess.

"They Killed Him" - Bob Dylan. well actually that's kind of funny. Maybe "Silvio", because some people actually like it.

"Last Junkie" by the Dandy Warhols triggers homicidal rages in me as effectively as littering.

kate, Monday, 4 November 2002 12:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

"If you become a true Doors fan, "Love Her Madly' is the only song of theirs you'll learn to hate"

..I love "Sylvio" - I absolutely hated it at first .. but it grew on me somehow..

Neil Young has too many to name, but if you dismiss most of his Geffen catalogue, I still hate "Mansion on the Hill"

no-one's said 'You Know You're Right' - hm!

But that's because no one loves Nirvana - not because the song doesn't totally suck.

"I love 'Lost in the Supermarker'!"

Well, I respect that, but personally speaking, I think it's a steaming pile of crap. Yes, I know Strummer wrote it for Jones. Yes, I know it showcased a theretofore unrealized "sensitive" side, etc. etc.

I just think it's a crap, whinging song....and I wish they'd never recorded it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 4 November 2002 14:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just about the whole 'Never let me down' album by Bowie. A crap record too far - the one that stopped me from having to buy every single thing that he produced. Even the 'Labyrinth' soundtrack didn't do that.

B-b-but "Mod Lang" is one of the best things in the Big Star catalogue, at least in my highly subjective and possibly errant opinion.

Everything else on yr list seems right to me, though, Evan.

Alex in NYC - How can you hate "Terror Couple Kill Cononel"?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Saturday, 9 August 2003 20:38 (twenty years ago) link

I dunno....I just think it's lazy. It doesn't do it for me. From the Bauhaushold, I much prefer "Lagartija Nick," "Dark Entries", "Kick in the Eye", "Bela Lugosi's Dead," "Stigmat Martyr" and "Antonin Artaud" (oops, this is starting to sound like a POX).

usually songs that were ruined by overexposure on classic rock radio - "Ohio," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," etc.

HATE Whiskeytown's "Everything I Do"

HATE "Frankly Mr Shankley"

So awful. And god knows I love the Beatles and many macca songs considered terrible...

I like Empire State of Mind (:-/)

The Blondie one I really don't like is One Way Or Another.

"Smart Girls" would have topped my list too, but I'm not sure unreleased bootlegs should count

Lee626, Monday, 11 March 2013 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

Fair enough. It is probably the worst song I've ever heard by someone I love. Geir already nominated Student Demonstration Time which is a great call, especially as it ruins the flow of one of my favourite albums of all time.

Rock the Shack and Slow Jam - New Order

I'm pretty forgiving with regards to New Order but those two songs pushed me over the edge. Truly horrible.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 11 March 2013 02:38 (eleven years ago) link

from Slow Jam:

The afternoon was very clear
The sun was beating down on me
I got thirsty for a beer
Then I had to go to sea
The sea was very rough
It made me feel sick
But I like that kind of stuff
It beats arithmetic

A pair of blotch-on-their-career abominations from legendary artists, made all the more loathsome because they were so popular:

Frank Sinatra - "Love and Marriage"
Chuck Berry - "My Ding-A-Ling"

- "Lost in the Supermarket" by the Clash

It's not fucking nonsense. It's a song I've always hated by band I've always loved. Your perception of logic and sense plays no role in the proceedings.

David Bowie's cover of 'Across the Universe' might be the only bad song he released in the '70s. Also much of his first album is astonishingly bad (way worse than his '80s stuff, which is mostly just boring at its worst).
