'I Felt The Evening Come Through The Window' sounds undeniably like Russel imo
― de l'asshole (flopson), Tuesday, 31 May 2016 15:00 (seven years ago) link
yeah on second listen I can hear more of what you mean re Russell. It seemed like an odd reference to me cuz I was picking up on much more hippie influences, hence Spence and Irvine, to be kind of reductive (Spence is falling-down 60s folk/rock and Irvine is spacey 70s soul/jazz; could throw a bit of "If I Could Only Remember My Name" in too, though obv the vocals are quite different), which is more what I was hearing on the first go through. anyway, it's a great album and it's not like it sounds super retro, it just reminded me of some stuff I really like. It's a great morning album fyi

i really like this. and it sounds pretty contemporary to me. maybe one of the better "new album" experiences i've had in awhile

cute. <3 that he chose a song that is 1:35 long on the album to make a video for. this album has been a staple all summer, thanks for making this thread

true. what's weird is his real name is perfectly nice, Jean-Sebastien Audet

new album is so good

finally got a chance to listen to this. It's really lovely, perfect dusk music. The scrappy/sketchy approach fits well alongside the new Solange.
― rob, Monday, 18 March 2019 17:37 (five years ago) link
lol just noticed there's a song called "Dew of the Dusk" which presumably put that idea in my head
― rob, Monday, 18 March 2019 17:42 (five years ago) link
um holy mother of god this new album is great. all the keyboards sound incredible, but even after the variety of the first 12 tracks i was surprised that 'that don't make it so' sounds so much like an outtake from d'angelo's voodoo

I tend to play this in situations where I can't pay attention to track names, but "Curtain of Rain" has really stood out for me
― rob, Monday, 15 April 2019 15:26 (five years ago) link
one of the best albums of the year so far
― flopson, Monday, 15 April 2019 17:22 (five years ago) link
i also tend to just let this wash over me and don’t know track names but ‘The Truth’ is the one that’s on rn and man, u could just live in its balmy strum. he has a great knack for those gentle peeling curlicues of feedback

not necessarily that similar to YJ but this my other fav youngster montreal sick chops indie soul band https://sickmtl.bandcamp.com/album/conspiracy-theorist

Checked it out after seeing it on Ted Gioia’s list. Liking it a lot, some similarity to the Kelsey Lu album which sadly seems to be overlooked in eoy polls.

Only thing in years that I've bought based on the cover, though tbf it was very cheap. Worth the few dollars of course.

brilliant album, though that first track kinda towers over the rest

nice! starting to look like every single artist I like is going to release an album this year
is "For Props" new? I love it, as usual it reminds me of half a dozen other things without seeming at all imitative
listening to "Victim" again now and, damn, I'm pissed I have to wait until September for this whole thing (both tracks have pretty summer-haze atmospheres)

i really love exploring the corners of this guy's mind. after first listen, feels less sprawling and ambitious than last year's album. the shorter track lengths of that one played to his advantage, i think. if there was an experiment you didn't like, it would be over in 90 seconds or less. this time, the experimental tracks drag a bit--but the poppier, ballad-y tracks are gorgeous and well-crafted. of course, first impressions usually mean little-to-zero when evaluating yves jarvis releases, considering how the same but by different means evolved in my mind from a pleasant curiosity to my favorite album of last year.

haven't listened to the new one yet but 'same by different means' is such a classic album

New album is probably a top 10 of the year for me. One of my best musical discoveries of the year.

Yeah, this is awesome. The last album still eludes me a bit but I find I'm sinking into this one pretty easily.

not quite sure what I think of it tbh, I feel like it might make more sense in an album context?

Holy shit thanks, how did I not hear about this?? Sundry Rock Song Stock was maybe my favorite album of 2020
― J. Sam, Thursday, 19 May 2022 21:58 (one year ago) link
starting to think that the zug is a major step up from sundry, and while it doesn’t approach the sprawl of the same but by different means, he makes up for it by packing his songs with fascinating diversions, and by focusing more on rhythm. he also seems to be an excellent guitar player
