Album is out. Love it. Only I wish the producer hadn't kept cranking up the reverb; probably an attempt to cover up some of the rougher spots, but the ramshackle elements are part of the pair's charm IMO.
"Welcome To The Treehouse" may be the pick of the songs I'd not heard previously, some seriously strong singing for once here.

I like the album too. It gets a bit much to hear all at once, I agree about the mix, it has some of that endless shiny tinkle that drives me crazy about bands like Animal Collective and Flaming Lips. But the songs are inventive and likable.

Katherine - there was nothing wrong with the way you made that point. Turrican's just annoyed he was on the receiving end of it and is now unconvincingly trying to elevate basic butthurtedness into some form of higher moral position.
― Matt DC, Friday, 13 July 2018 19:10 (seven months ago) Permalink
Katherine, I don't see why this needs to be pointed out, but her accent being described as "fucking annoying" has absolutely less than zero to do with her gender!

my point was less about any specific instance and more about the pattern of women's voices being the ones to be described as "annoying" enough to keep people from listening to their music, where comparatively difficult men's voices -- many of which I like -- are less frequently seen as this much of an issue

― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:40 (seven months ago) Permalink
Heh, I can't stand either Waits, Young or Dylan. Waits in particular has a voice which irritates me no end. I tend to enjoy covers of Dylan songs more thsn the original versions. Nevertheless, they do remain popular with the Steve Hoffman lot, a bunch of people so unheathily invested in The Beatles that they're still flinging sexist and racist shit in the direction of Yoko Ono, so I get what you mean.

― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Friday, 13 July 2018 19:48 (seven months ago) Permalink
I'll confess to Bjork and Kate Bush being acquired tastes as vocalists, but that had nothing to do with their gender, more that I just had to get used to their approaches - particularly Bjork's. I went through the same thing with The Cure, The Smashing Pumpkins and The Associates.
Christina Aguilera's voice annoys me, but I don't like that showboaty, zillion-notes-per-syllable, rammed-with-melisma vocal style no matter who does it.

― Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 July 2018 20:03 (seven months ago) Permalink
I personally find myself more drawn to women's voices than men's voices, especially in indie/rock type music, but I couldn't bring myself to try properly with this album yet because I remember thinking the vocals were awful on whatever I heard from them on the first album. Women are disproportionately deemed "annoying" in terms of performance in so many ways and with so much creativity that men don't seem to suffer.
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 14 July 2018 14:13 (seven months ago) Permalink
I do feel like there's been a lot of 'the singer is so annoying' directed at male vocalists over the years on ILM, but that might be skewed because maybe 70% of that has come from the Lex.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 14 July 2018 14:53 (seven months ago) Permalink
Speaking just for myself — there are bands I can’t listen to due to the male singer’s voice (and it seems to happen more & more... just happened this week; I had to turn off something I was listening to). Can’t recall any instances of this w/female vox.
― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:16 (seven months ago) Permalink
Obviously the main reason for this is that men are 'allowed' to be bad singers, the industry doesn't care, whereas women by and large aren't.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:27 (seven months ago) Permalink
To be clear, I’m not speaking of singing “ability” or style/technique — I’m talking specifically about sound of the dudes’ voices (which seemed to be what Turrican was complaining about).
― i’m still stanning (morrisp), Saturday, 14 July 2018 15:34 (seven months ago) Permalink
To be accurate, he was complaining about her accent, which is a constituent of the sound of her voice, I suppose.
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Saturday, 14 July 2018 17:15 (seven months ago) Permalink
I'm not sure if that means if she sang like Aretha Franklin, or some other world renowned singer, but with the same accent he would find it annoying or not. It might sound weird however.
