Two of her singles have received 7+ scores on The Singles Jukebox now which seems reasonable cause to start a thread.

The brief - Quiet stormy soul with dance elements from Papua New Guinean born, Sydney-based woman (former Idol contestant and blues backing singer) with a voice and style that has variously been compared to Roisin Murphy, Fatima, Teedra Moses and Mutya. Lex mentioned on another thread that with KING, Tweet and Corinne Bailey Rae that "it's really quite a year for quiet, soft r&b", and I think this fits well into that lineage.

There's an earlier album, but things are really falling into place with this one - measured, rich production, more developed and thoughtful songwriting. I've seen her live twice since November and will do so again in a few weeks. It's worth going to hear her voice alone which is a far more powerful instrument than "Once" or "Diggin'" might suggest.

Once is fantastic and she was really good when I saw her live a few months ago, so I'm looking forward to this a lot

Looking forward to this, though I still get flashes of Kiwi childhood staple Ngaire-with-one-'i' whenever I see her name:

I'm so excited for this record. 2 more days!

The album is so fantastic. "Fall Into My Arms" is a Chance verse away from being a highlight on Coloring Book

art baengels (monotony), Friday, 10 June 2016 23:44 (three years ago) link

Looking forward to this. How's the local reception?

etc, Saturday, 11 June 2016 00:12 (three years ago) link

quite positive i think, i think she's had a modest iTunes chart showing and some favourable reviews. Coloring Book is the Triple J feature album this week but she might get that gig the week after which will give her a bit of a sales boost. I haven't seen any good writing about it yet - just small 100-word columns in newspapers or reviews on Australian blogs that don't really engage with the material. I think it's really special though!

This is nice.

thank you brad b/c i didn't think anyone else was listening

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 21:46 (three years ago) link

she was extraordinary live on saturday night; took us to church in particular for "i can't feel god anymore", and "fall into my arms" as encore was transcendent. people were singing "once" back to her which shocked her a bit i think, in an endearing way. i feel like that all she needs is some non-australian publications to take notice of her before this really blows up.

initially dismissed "cruel" as the weak link on the album, but the more i listen to it the more impressed i am by the way the track builds and the guest male vocalist's (also her producer) credible paul buchanan impression

I need to hear this.

Tim F, Monday, 27 June 2016 06:32 (three years ago) link

Okay I totally love this album.

she's great! hope she tours......

m0stlyClean, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 02:03 (three years ago) link

I think this is AOTY contender for me.

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 08:51 (three years ago) link

same here. unlikely to eclipse the 1975, but....idk

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 15:09 (three years ago) link

i think it was actually "cruel" that crystallized my love for this record. it moves like a decayed scritti politti song

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 17:20 (three years ago) link

"I can't hear God anymore" kinda remembers me tweet's "drunk", dunno why tho. They put me in the same state of mind.

Nourry, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 22:50 (three years ago) link

the whispered backing vocals on "cruel" sound SO much like jessie ware. odd coincidence that the 3rd track on ware's own sophomore album was also called "cruel"

Great album, will listen again.

Only Aussie gigs announced so far, three this week and two in September/October.

i'm going to see her again at the Corner (this'll be the fourth time in 12 months i think)

i wasn't taken with the album as a whole, but "diggin" is sublime.

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2016 04:30 (three years ago) link

the raves in this thread make me want to go back to the album, tbh.

Wozniak on Kimye's Baby (jaymc), Friday, 14 October 2016 04:31 (three years ago) link

The production on this is really good but Ngaiire is such a subtly wonderful performer, her voice is full of cracks and bends that really sell this. This is definite AOTY materal.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 15 October 2016 11:08 (three years ago) link

two years pass...

Ngaiire performed a new song called "Closer" live on the radio today, just accompanied by a pianist - you can hear it here at 2h18m or so: https://radio.abc.net.au/programitem/peE3nRlYX3?play=true

In between now and the last posts in this thread she's had her first baby. I think there's going to be a new album this year; looking forward to it, obviously.

monotony, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 01:14 (eight months ago) link

Keen for new material.

I never mentioned in this thread but I ultimately saw her play live at Gaytimes Festival this time 2 years ago and she was fantastic.

Tim F, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 02:00 (eight months ago) link

That’s very good news, looking forward to hearing her new stuff. I’d been wondering what was going on with her. I actually dreamed about her after reading monotony’s post earlier. It was super nice!

(all I could hear on that link was a news broadcast btw)

breastcrawl, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 07:17 (eight months ago) link

even this week i remembered her record, that i love. such good news.

Nourry, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 09:13 (eight months ago) link

xp yes she was appearing on a news show to promote an artist development program she's involved in. But you should be able to hear the song if you skip ahead to the very end of the stream. Her voice sounds O_O as always

seven months pass...

new single "Shiver" is out Friday. heard it on the radio last night, it's v good

monotony, Thursday, 3 October 2019 07:43 (two weeks ago) link

I like it, though the vocal sounds a bit... tentative? It’s very much a continuation of Blastoma. I’m hoping for new approaches from her as well.
