listening to lovesexy now, i think i never listened to this much back in the day because of the annoying track thing
arrested development loved the shit out of this album
feels very "early 90s" even though it was '88, still ahead of his time

I'm surprised artists don't do stuff like this more often. My copy of Spiritualized's "Laser Guided Melodies" is divided into four long tracks. Can't think of any others.

GY!BE's debut album 'F♯ A♯ ∞' vinyl version has Side A ('Nervous, Sad, Poor') and Side B ('Bleak, Uncertain, Beautiful'). The cd-version has three movements called 'Dead Flag Blues', 'East Hastings' and 'Providence', each of which contain multiple parts, but aren't cued as such.
dEUS's My Sister = My Clock counts 14 (?) songs but is a one track cd.

Nah, I def think Prince made the right idea to pull it and that he replaced it with the superior record.

and more sonically dense and weirder... The Black Album is mostly party jams apart from one or two tracks.

the only thing the Black Album has that Lovesexy doesn't is Bob George, which tbf would have been out of place on Lovesexy. maybe it coulda been an Alphabet Street b-side or something.

Yeah, that's the standout track on the LP by miles.

remember cd subindexes? it's part of the redbook standard but i never had a cd player that supported it, and only one cd that did (the v/a comp "miniatures"). mostly it seemed to be used for "hidden tracks" by putting music under index 0 on a track.
anyway, stupid cd tricks. i don't miss them.

Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty had some music in the "negative space" between tracks. I believe it was the only CD I owned that did this, kinda neat.

Pregaps (the negative space in front of tracks) are not the same as subindexes. Back in the late 80s a friend had a CD player that showed subindexes, and I can remember just one CD that had them: Pump by Aerosmith. A few of the longer intros had a different subindex than the main song.

relistening to Art Official Age and at 2.45 on "clouds" it gets kind of bummerishfemme brit voice intones: "mr nelson. mr nelson can you hear my voice? sir, we know you're a little bit groggy and you're probably going to find it hard to speak but don't try to talk or persist too much now. we just wanted to let you know that the medication you were given has put you in suspended animation for quite some time... well, in fact, for forty five years. But where you are now is a place that does not require time. That being said, you are completely safe and we are here to help you."

― his eye is on despair-o (Jon not Jon), Friday, 24 February 2017 18:26 (seven years ago) link
it's a pretty good album! mostly meat in the middle. "U KNOW" and "BREAKFAST CAN WAIT" and "TIME" hold up as legit classics imo. the "until i /i find my/my way back/home/home" theme weaving through the "WAY BACK HOME" / "affirmation III" is lovely, very throwback to Come. but wooboy, the "in the afterworld" electro-spectral bullshit really stings to hear it now.

"Baltimore" was one of, if not the last, original song he released, right? If so, what a great swansong - beautiful, with a killer guitar lead. Easily my favorite thing he did this century.

So I have a lot of trouble with Art Official Age (i reacquainted myself over the weekend) because it just sounds so fucking terrible. So incredibly thin and bodiless, almost like the effect native to a low bitrate mp3. It sounds like he abused some sort of stereo widening plugin -- synths and rhythm elements are always being spread to the extremes of the field so that they sound incredibly anemic... anytime something is fairly tightly located near the center it has some body and impact to it but so many of the songs have important elements atomized to the winds. It sounds like it could be cool when i describe it in words but it is just an inherently bad sound IMO. Shame because this is a good set of songs and a good set of performances with lots of good ideas in them.
There's a general trend in Prince toward thin DAW-ey terrible synth patches starting from about 1994 on but on AOA it is intolerable to me.

Warner, which released Prince’s first 18 albums containing most of the hits, signed another record deal with Prince in 2014 that secured its ownership of all of those albums in perpetuity overseas, while giving it the right to block future releases from Prince’s storied vault—the centerpiece of Universal’s deal—if the tunes were recorded while he was under contract with Warner.
surprised Prince went for this deal after all the acrimony for all those years
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 18 April 2017 17:35 (seven years ago) link
Yeah, but maybe there were new people who made it worth his while to come back. Hell, even John Fogerty re-signed with Fantasy in 2005 (after everyone who was responsible for his shitty deal were no longer with the label or dead).
