it you place "will you love me tomorrow," "goin' back," and "(you make me feel like a) natural woman" against "by the time i get to phoenix," "wichita lineman," and "galveston," i'd say it's pretty close. but i think that webb ultimately has a deeper catalog, is a more skillful producer and arranger, and, for me, his work is just more interesting in general.

more apt comparisons would probably be mann/weill vs. goffin/king and bacharach/david vs. webb.

I'm so fucking ashamed...I think I forgot to vote for Macarthur PArk in my top 100...ouch, anyway, Webb all the way, saw him last yr in concert - he made a cheesy micro-brewery seem like heaven for just a while...and then he went and ruined it by thanking god...oh well, webb - bttigtp, Witchita, where's the playgroound suzi? Hands down, Webb.

jimmy webb gave us the godawful webb brothers, so for that he loses.

So Keith, who the hell are you and how much music have you created in this lifetime? Leave the Webb boys alone.

The godawful Webb Brothers? Surely some mistake? Seen them live? Thought not. The boys are quite simply brilliant. So are the cds for that matter.

--in the end--it's what the music conjures in your soul--how it links you with a moment in the past and a moment to be...Mr. Webb has this ability...

five years pass...

Found a nice copy of Nils Lofgren's first solo record ('75) at the flea market yesterday. Good version of "Goin' Back," very different from the four or five others I have. I'm going to put it alongside "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and the most cover-proof song ever. You just can't do a bad version of it.
