10 Cheeky Easter Eggs in (contenderizer), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 23:45 (one year ago) Permalink

torn between being hopeful for the remaster (the originals weren't exactly a tribute to great mastering) and concerned about brick walls

tremendous crime wave and killing wave (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 23:55 (one year ago) Permalink

Only a matter of time before they remaster AJFA right?

La Lechazunga (Leee), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 23:56 (one year ago) Permalink

seriously you hope they handed all the work over to somebody else and didn't audit the test pressings. those guys are deaf and have no idea what their music ought to sound like.

"Okay so for this one we finally remove that asshole's bass."

"Uh...Lars..."

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 February 2016 00:01 (one year ago) Permalink

Justice is the one I might actually buy the super deluxe box of. It's my favorite of the first four. And I hope they keep the mix exactly how it's always been, and just run it through the louderizer.

Metallica actually moved Jason's bass to Kill 'em All remaster

gaz coombes? yo he don't got NUTHIN ta prove! (Neanderthal), Thursday, 18 February 2016 00:35 (one year ago) Permalink

are they gonna fix the guitar channel syncing issues on KEA? part of me kinda wishes they didn't.

these are good ones to remaster tho. I'll probably throw for Ride.

one month passes...

soo...it's kinda hard to tell how the non-box set re-releases work. like if I just wanted the cd, I'd get just the remastered cd and no bonus tracks? I have to spend $140 mf'ing dollars to get those?

Amazon has it listed for less than ten bucks but the tracklist is just the core Ride tracks.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 13 April 2016 21:27 (one year ago) Permalink

what are the chances of these sounding decent?

i just want the DCC gold discs

lute bro (brimstead), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 21:35 (one year ago) Permalink

they should replace all the snares with that "st anger" ping

lute bro (brimstead), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 21:36 (one year ago) Permalink

early word is that these are basically brickwalled just like Death Magnetic. that's going by Amazon customer reviews (http://www.amazon.com/Ride-Lightning-Deluxe-Boxset-poster/product-reviews/B01BUX7YPO/ref=cm_cr_dp_synop?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=recent#R2GR18LO5LUDSP), so take it for what it's worth. I'm waiting for a proper professional review. few of the people on the Metallica boards who got theirs are really reporting on the sound yet.

some Metallica fans are stanning for it, saying there's more definition. it just sounded 'louder' to me, but admittedly, I wasn't able to do the blind A/B test. they definitely aren't impressive like the Zep remasters though.

I will say I wasn't really that impressed with the audio I heard on Soundcloud which is why I didn't buy either the deluxe or the standalone.

anybody get it?

Neanderthal, Saturday, 16 April 2016 20:48 (one year ago) Permalink

Creeping Death seems to be somewhat crisper on the guitar side now that I'm listening to both, but it seems to be almost clipping on my Chromebook (which doesn't get very loud). it's definitely LOUDER than the original master.

Neanderthal, Saturday, 16 April 2016 21:03 (one year ago) Permalink

xp whoa cool

lute bro (brimstead), Saturday, 16 April 2016 22:48 (one year ago) Permalink

massive sigh/lol that they de-bricked Death Magnetic for some Guitar Hero thing

lute bro (brimstead), Saturday, 16 April 2016 22:49 (one year ago) Permalink

guess those DCCs arent the way to go. damn you steve hoffman!

lute bro (brimstead), Saturday, 16 April 2016 22:50 (one year ago) Permalink

i played the lightning rm once today, haven't compared closely, but my first impression was that it had lost a lot of the things that appealed to me about the goofy-sounding (to me) old master. i suppose the rhythm guitars and vox are more up front, but strangely that doesn't make the thrashiness of the typical song come to the fore (more a midrange wash of guitar noise) and it seems that the leads have lost a lot of definition. lars on the whole sounds better recorded, but in a way that sounds as if there was a fairly typical mainstream 80s rock record sound lurking inside the old masters all along. his kicks have lost their punch and the bass seems similarly de-emphasized.

j., Saturday, 16 April 2016 22:57 (one year ago) Permalink

I was gonna say - one of the Metallica mods on a message board who got his says that the bass is more prominent, and yet when I listened to Creeping Death in headphones, I could barely hear it.

$5 for the remaster cd is hardly a bad enough deal not to try it (might even be on Spotify). I really do, though, want the bonus stuff, like the live shows/DVDs, so part of me wants to splurge and part of me wants to remind myself that I'm past my most rabid Metallica listening days and how many live versions of Kill/RTL material do I need (I seriously used to pay $40 for bootlegs right before the mp3/easy acquisition took over - there's only so many times I can listen to James' voice crack)

Neanderthal, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:05 (one year ago) Permalink

also on Four HOrsemen I still hear the left/right channel syncing issue at times which drives me nuts in headphones.

still feels like the guitar is out of tune slightly as well tho I don't know that much could be done about that (I'm also probably 40% deaf from concerts so who knows at this point)

Neanderthal, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:08 (one year ago) Permalink

yeah on lightning the bass is up more in the mix, i guess, maybe you'd say it's a bit more musical, but it was already pretty quiet and it seems they sacrificed its punch to bring out the tone?

j., Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:11 (one year ago) Permalink

The only Metallica albums I currently own physical versions of are ...And Justice for All and Death Magnetic, so I guess I'll pick these up the next time I place an Amazon order, just to have them around the house. I definitely don't need the deluxe boxes - I have a few '80s bootlegs on a hard drive that I never, ever, ever listen to.

Had a Best Buyou gift certificate so I got this for a buck.

Played it in my car stereo.

NOW I can hear an improvement. I hear drum hits where I didn't. Guitars are crisp and louder

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 April 2016 15:53 (one year ago) Permalink

BTW be careful when buying this in a store. The only things differentiating the remaster from the original is the remaster is a digital and a slightly different sticker.

My Best Buy carried both at the same price and they initially gave me the wrong one for in-store pickup

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 April 2016 17:31 (one year ago) Permalink

Digital=digipak

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 April 2016 17:31 (one year ago) Permalink

The digipak is actually one of the selling points for me. I like them.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 17 April 2016 17:48 (one year ago) Permalink

So wait the $5 CDs that Amazon is selling right now of AJFA, MOP, Metallica, etc, are these any of kind of remaster at all? Or just the original Elektra versions re-released on a new label?

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:18 (one year ago) Permalink

And does it really matter I guess...

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:19 (one year ago) Permalink

The previous editions of Metallica's catalog were the Elektra editions, reassigned to the band's own Blackened Recordings label with distribution through Rhino. (Rhino and Elektra both being arms of Warner Music Group.)

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:21 (one year ago) Permalink

So these $5 versions are just the original CDs basically?

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:25 (one year ago) Permalink

There are remasters being sold for 5$ and original masters for same price for KEA and RTL.

if you order online literally the only way to tell apart is the release date is 4/15/2016.

In a store it'll be in digipak form and on the sticker say NEWLY REMASTERED.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:26 (one year ago) Permalink

It is Hella confusing online cos Amazon pimps the non remaster over the remaster

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:27 (one year ago) Permalink

Tho the remaster might be more than $5 outside of Best Buy

Neanderthal, Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:28 (one year ago) Permalink

Got it.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Sunday, 17 April 2016 18:30 (one year ago) Permalink

Man, you guys weren't kidding about the packaging--I was just in Walmart and they had the two RTLs--the new one even keeps the notice about '...the limitations of the source tape..." on the back cover!

Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 17 April 2016 21:14 (one year ago) Permalink

Lol yeah! That made it even more confusing.

They're going for an authentic bootleg experience:

*Note: Filming didn’t begin until after we started playing.

*Note: Someone didn’t hit record until we were halfway through the song

*Note: The recording didn’t begin until we were halfway through the song.

*Note: The tape ran out before we finished the song.

The Justice remaster will be the most exciting and interesting of these for obvious reasons.

The remaster of "Disposable Heroes" is on Spotify and sounds fantastic.

I really hope Metallica gets someone really good pro to do a modern remix of And Justice for All like Brendan O'Brien or Steven Wilson. They could do a remaster of the original mix and have them both available.

earlnash, Wednesday, 30 August 2017 12:54 (one month ago) Permalink

A Steven Wilson remix of Justice would be great. "One" could really use some bongos and Mellotron.

A Steven Wilson remix of Justice

oh ilx, don't ever change.

I do not want to hear any live Metallica recordings, I want to hear Lars in perfectionist studio mode rather than crazily-bad-time stage mode. I don't even know that I want to hear a remastered AJFA, but I would enjoy hearing that bag of drum track tape edits. Get Oneohtrix Point Never to collage them together or something.

Weird because I have always had this mental image in my head of printing presses and forklifts whenever I listen to Disposable Heroes.

pplains, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 19:19 (five days ago) Permalink

it will be interesting if they do a remix (as opposed to just a remaster) for justice

though i bought a nice remaster on vinyl (think it was done at Mofi) about 10 years ago

I remember reading that Eddie from Charles & Eddie used to be in a band with Cliff Burton.
