It's been 'Accelerate', 'Fade Away', 'Kamikaze', 'Delirious' and 'Memorial' for me, and I went with 'Memorial'

The Dave Grohl of ILX (Turrican), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:41 (eight years ago) link

we already settled this on the tracks poll, but any opportunity to vote for 'slowly', the album's true pinnacle

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:47 (eight years ago) link

Probably "Kamikaze", but I feel like "Insects" needs some votes in this and is at risk of not getting them.

Tim F, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:54 (eight years ago) link

"delirious" for me, but i am sympathetic to tim's argument for "insects"

cher guevara (lex pretend), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:57 (eight years ago) link

this album deserves its own ballot poll tbh

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:57 (eight years ago) link

pick your top five, email josh, results to be rolled out tomorrow

ZESTY O'PRIDE (imago), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 11:58 (eight years ago) link

"Insects" blew me away when playing the album last month in line at a car wash.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 12:31 (eight years ago) link

Lol I had my epiphany at a car wash too, Kamikaze is the best.

It's settled. Ten Love Songs is the best car wash album of all time. Move over Rose Royce

thom yorke state of mind (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 13:34 (eight years ago) link

Fade Away ahead of Slowly and Kamikaze. It's all about when she sings "this is the kind of love that never goes out of style" for me. Also that microwave ping is pretty special.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 14:00 (eight years ago) link

delirious

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 February 2016 16:10 (eight years ago) link

Haven't heard.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 16:22 (eight years ago) link

This is impossible. Voted this morning but I forgot what I voted for. Memorial serves such a crucial purpose on the album and is so gorgeous. Fade Away was my singles ballot vote. The slower songs show off some of her best melodies and vocal performances.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 2 February 2016 16:23 (eight years ago) link

Voted "Slowly" then immediately regretted not voting for "Accelerate" or "Memorial" or "Kamikaze" but if I'd voted for any of those I'd also have regretted not voting for "Slowly". So "Slowly" it is.

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 05:14 (eight years ago) link

Ah all these songs are great but Memorial is the arty dark core of the album and what makes it so special

got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 08:00 (eight years ago) link

Voted for "Slowly" which is obviously going to run away with it, but "Darlings" and "Trust Me" are the backbone of this album and I hate to think how they'll probably get no votes.

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 09:30 (eight years ago) link

What is it about this album that's grabbing hold of people so strongly on this forum? I bought it because of the ravenous ILM hype, and I like it - a lot - but it really seems like people here are talking about it being one of their absolute favourite albums ever. Is there anything significant written about it anywhere longform?

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 09:48 (eight years ago) link

I would lol if slowly "ran away with it" when it didn't even make the 77

art baengels (monotony), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 10:09 (eight years ago) link

'Fade Away' is really good and up there with all the other modern-day 'Heart of Glass' ripoffs.

xxp I wish there was

abcfsk, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 16:13 (eight years ago) link

@ sick, I feel very similarly about this record and say the first Tinashe record, where it is clearly single-origin (self-produced pop music) and still hits all the highs of an ecumenical pop production. I think I stated upthread that she's a genius melodist. She writes in that sweet spot of ESL lyricism, with disarmingly unconventional syntax and weighting, but full fluency. Ironically the clearest precedent to my ears for this music is Patrick Wolf's, also an aspiring single-origin chart-topper. I am also appreciative of the fact that this is almost certainly a publicly funded album, as no artist with this relatively minor level of exposure could afford such gorgeous production details like the orchestra. So yeah, it's everything I want, in theory: slant lyrics, perfect songs, the sound of publicly funded art, enormous ambition but entirely homemade. It's less of a once-in-a-lifetime unicorn-album and more of a best-case-example

got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 17:48 (eight years ago) link

^ Well she had two #1 albums at home (The Brothel - best-selling album in Norway in 2010, The Silicone Veil - best-selling album in Norway in 2012) before this one also went to number 1 and is charting in the top 30 fifty weeks later so I wouldn't guess she's exactly strapped for cash or resources at the moment. First time she's produced all the tracks herself though.

abcfsk, Wednesday, 3 February 2016 18:08 (eight years ago) link

Population of Norway is 5million so three no.1 albums might not make you loaded. That said, I bet she's doing ok.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 18:52 (eight years ago) link

Never said she was cash-strapped, just saying orchestras are expensive

listened to this for the first time :)

yea prob kamikaze is my fav rn

sole vote for insects here, hi everyone

got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 21:32 (eight years ago) link

probably the best "album to listen to a thousand times in a row immediately after a breakup" i've ever encountered

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 21:34 (eight years ago) link

"Insects" does little or nothing for me, the main lyric "we're having fun" too closely echoes "let's have fun" from "Accelerate", which is not really any fun at all

got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 21:35 (eight years ago) link

"Accelerate" is fun, that is. "Insects" not so much

got a long list of ilxors (fgti), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 21:35 (eight years ago) link

witnessing "insects" live will completely change the way you feel about it jsyk

j. winters (josh), Wednesday, 3 February 2016 22:36 (eight years ago) link

anyway i ended up voting for "memorial"

are you referring to one of the pre-Aquarius mixtapes here? if so which one? id be curious to check it out. aquarius only has a handful of self produced tracks iirc

voted for Kamikaze but it's not hard to make a case for anything on here

ufo, Thursday, 4 February 2016 00:04 (eight years ago) link

almost missed this and way to early to run this poll. voting "Memorial."

Bee OK, Thursday, 4 February 2016 03:34 (eight years ago) link

love how after the 1-2 "Accelerate/Fade Away" punch "Silencer" comes in to perfectly setup the middle section of songs. Feel like a truncated-edit of "Kamikaze" would've run away with it on Eurovision.

remembering back to when I first heard Bjork's "Post" for the first time and having that same "holy shit!" moment with this album.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 4 February 2016 16:31 (eight years ago) link

Voted "Darlings" because it's a perfect opener and I guess it needs my help. Some days I prefer "Slowly" or "Memorial" or "Kamikaze" or...

Evan, Friday, 5 February 2016 00:02 (eight years ago) link

Trust Me is much worse than all the other songs. It sounds like a Radiohead b-side.

Only 4 for Accelerate? madness.

like Uber, but for underpants (James Morrison), Friday, 5 February 2016 01:41 (eight years ago) link

I voted for Accelerate but it was close between that and Fade Away, because, as said before, they run together so well they basically feel of a piece.

Was gutted that I didn't have the whole of this album on my iPhone for the walk in this morning, just those two and Slowly. Blame Bowie.

But anyway, I've been trying to listen to this as intently as possible, and the Patrick Wolf comparison makes a certain amount of sense - in some ways this is the album I hoped he'd make with Alec Empire after Lupercalia, but which he's failed to do because he's gone on weird sabbatical. The songwriting is really good, and the arrangements and mixing are fabulous. It's clicking into place.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 5 February 2016 09:14 (eight years ago) link

would have voted for Accelerate into Fade Away if that was a single track for sure, together they're certainly the highlight. starting with the momentum from Accelerate makes Fade Away even better

ufo, Friday, 5 February 2016 09:23 (eight years ago) link

there's no album I gave more chances last year than this one, after reading the albums poll I put it on again - and it finally won me over. Got it on vinyl yesterday, great release.

niels, Friday, 5 February 2016 09:57 (eight years ago) link

i got lost driving and fell in love with trust me tonight

qualx, Friday, 12 February 2016 02:57 (eight years ago) link

i underestimated how good fade away is

johnny crunch, Monday, 15 February 2016 00:35 (eight years ago) link

two years pass...

This has finally clicked with me - the gothy ABBA sound initially struck me as too camp and too scandi. But as repeatedly noted, the songwriting is pretty brilliant and some of the lyrics hit hard.
Surprised "Accelerate" didn't walk this. So good.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 15 March 2018 08:58 (six years ago) link

i think my preferences switched from 'accelerate' to 'fade away' to 'slowly' over time

nxd, Friday, 16 March 2018 09:23 (six years ago) link

fade away reminds me of stevie nicks. "slowly" would be my choice tho
