Jlin going all in on the 12/8 feel, ends up feeling very West African (also very pointillist, all those different little one-shot samples): https://www.residentadvisor.net/tracks/835461

DJ Chap: https://discospeligrosa.bandcamp.com/album/drum-pakk-1
Teklife crew member does something like favela meets footwork. Mostly just drum tracks, but short lengths so you can groove to them and move on

Machine Girl: https://machinegirl.bandcamp.com/album/machine-girl-vs-machine-girl
EP from late last year. Not straight footwork by a any means, lots of jungle and breakbeat in there too. But I like artists that f with the formula

not to keep promoting but chance the rapper / lil yachty's dj oreo is actually from chicago's west side & in this interview he talks about djing / throwing the war zone footwork battles/parties, being mentored by tek life, the wala cam underground etc:

i was surprised that i wasn't much into the dj earl album because in general i really like his production and dj'ing (particularly the jungle / dnb influence he brings)

It feels really awkward for me arguing this with a chicagoan, and my comment that dj nate invented bop was meant tongue in cheek, but the flexx washington mixtape came out in august, and ballin came out in september, no?

I'm sure most rap producers in Chicago have dabbled in footwork/juke, but out of the ones that really made their name on it, I can't think of any others (besides DJ Nate) who abandoned it?

some of them used to do it primarily but i'm sure veering to rap was specifically bc they hadn't made their names as dance producers

im not saying the culture is gone at all, i know ppl who still do it, just that the rap gold rush def shifted some of the zeitgeist away for awhile
