Oh shit, a full Cult Club album just popped up on Spotify today. I had no idea it was even coming.

that Kristin Kontrol album is an absolute joy, the perfect intersection of so many different things I love.

boxedjoy, Saturday, 4 June 2016 08:56 (seven years ago) link

The Kristin Kontrol album reminds me of CRJ's Emotion in that the opening track is so mind blowing that the rest of the album, while uniformly excellent, cannot help but feel like a bit of a letdown in its inability to ever match the opener.

I suppose I can't disagree with that

boxedjoy, Sunday, 5 June 2016 08:59 (seven years ago) link

The Eefje de Visser album is very good, though Scheef is the standout imo.

two weeks pass...

Just came to post about the Cult Club album but I see JF beat me to it by a few weeks. I've been checking in on Cult Club every couple of months to see if they were up to anything and was surprised tonight to see an album was out. Sounds great so far. For those who don't do Spotify, it's a free download (if you give up your email) in any digital format from their label's Bandcamp:

https://domestica.bandcamp.com/album/cult-club-play-with-lies-2016-ref-dom07-s

Would love to have this and the 12" on vinyl but coming in at over $50 with shipping from Spain I'll have to be content with the free download.

The Men I Trust album from last year was one of my silent favorites, so I'm glad they're staying active. The bass work in this is phenomenal.

I really don't know what you're all hearing in that Cult Club album, it just sounds like an average 80's pastiche to me.

From the indie side of the fence, the cloudtop vocalist by far the most interesting part.

hello fellow shambhala-heads. Determined to find the time to find more music from now on. I've been meaning to go through the 2015 thread but haven't managed it as it's too big, any recommended highlights?

I've barely heard any good new music, last actual purchases were probably Suzanne Sundfor and Kristin Kontrol (which I have been enjoying more than I thought I would)
oh just seen that's been getting lots of love on here, good good!

kinder, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:18 (seven years ago) link

Either I'm just not feeling the shambhala that's out there this year or I'm just burned out on all of it, but I'm listening to mostly other kinds of things this year. As I said on fb the other day, "I'm letting all that stuff go to voicemail now."

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 22 August 2016 21:22 (seven years ago) link

^^this is like me w/ country this year.

offhand, my fave shambhala singles from 2015 (all followed up by albums in 2016) came from shura, niki & the dove, ngaiire, and school of seven bells.

dc, Monday, 22 August 2016 21:30 (seven years ago) link

I hear a lot of stuff I think is nice, fine even if on paper it ticks all the right boxes but only occasionally something I really really get into. It's a numbers game I think, and there are more and more artists with a similar sort of sound so it all gets watered down.
But then again I download the odd sort of thing I think is 'hmmm not bad I suppose' then a year or two later I listen again and really love it. (Today it was Austra)

Thanks for the recs, will have a listen.

Suggestions for those playing Shambhala catch up:

2014: Ballet School - The Dew Lasts an Hour, iamamiwhoami - Blue, Lamb - Backspace Unwind, Mr. Twin Sister - Mr. Twin Sister,
2015: Allie X - CollXtion EP, Kaleida - Think EP, Kate Boy - One, Susanne Sundfor - Ten Love Songs, Tamaryn - Cranekiss, V.V. Brown - Glitch
2016: Kristin Kontrol - X-Communicate, Pr0files - Jurassic Technologie, Shura - Nothing's Real

got, got, need...
Good list, thanks! Ballet School were one of my favourite finds from the 2014 list.

Empress Of were also in there and I think there's new stuff or at least a proper album (produced by David Wrench) I need to go and listen to.

Her album last year was so-so, but her one-off single from this year "Woman Is a Word" is so very good.

Eefje de Visser is great. I haven't listened to her current album very much yet, but her previous album, Het is, is very good.

She has a great live band, check out this complete show from 2014.

Can't remember where we were talking about Haerts but I've just seen they've got a "new" single (this Jan afaict) and have also covered 'Everybody here wants you'.

This might skew a bit more indie than most of what gets posted here, but this still feels very this thread-y:

I am really enjoying the Synne Sanden album. It's the kind of Shambhala-by-numbers I enjoy, a really good not-pop album of weird textures and post-diva singing. The fleeting appearance of jazz saxophones helps.

boxedjoy, Sunday, 16 October 2016 16:43 (seven years ago) link

Also "Cocaine Style" is still remarkable.

On the teen-pop end, the video wears its Amanda Palmer influence in the merkins. Infuriatingly catchy.

Playlist is updated; for a year where there was some hue and cry about the ebb of shambhala, there's still plenty to explore: 125 songs and 8 hours or so on tap.
