SHOCK MEEE

i think this is way more successful than any of mastodon's alt-rock attempts. i liked once more 'round the sun pretty ok though
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 December 2015 18:25 (eight years ago) link
my idea of it being more successful may or may not be rooted in the vocals
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 December 2015 18:33 (eight years ago) link
it sounds really dreary and samey to me but i've only heard it on the internet.

I also wanted to complain about dreary sound, but this album actually sounds a bit less dreary than previous colors and turning it up always helps.
― Sufjan Grafton, Thursday, 31 December 2015 18:43 (eight years ago) link
It does sound muddy
― calstars, Thursday, 31 December 2015 19:12 (eight years ago) link
Horrible sounding record imo
― Spottie, Thursday, 31 December 2015 19:23 (eight years ago) link
nah, just turn up the phons imo https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-loudness_contour#/media/File:Lindos1.svg

the music is not really my thing, but the studio video about recording the drums (it's called 'Perfectly Accidental') is cool, thanks for that.

I hate to be that guy but Purple is fucking cringeworthy. They were always a mini-Mastodon but they're an even lamer alt-rock band than Mastodon have become which is almost some kind of achievement.
This is kind of the standard statement from 'real' metal people, right? Baroness/Mastodon/Torche/Deafheaven/A few more I can't think of are fake metal for the Pitchfork set?
― Your Ribs are My Ladder, Thursday, 31 December 2015 20:25 (eight years ago) link
this record is considerably more metal than yellow & green imo

anyone who likes this album and hasn't heard elder's lore: you should
― calstars, Thursday, 31 December 2015 21:00 (eight years ago) link
I don't really know what those have in common but I like that one too!
The footage of the band all singing the climax vocals on "Chlorine and Wine" is the heartwarming music bro visual of the 10s

It probably is, except I think Mastodon's first 4 albums are classic, Torche are by far at their best at their most pop, but Deafheaven and Baroness are embarassing to me in ways I find difficult to articulate
― Kat?ßas?? (ultros ultros-ghali), Friday, 1 January 2016 14:14 (eight years ago) link
Mastodon's first and third albums are terrible and boring. Leviathan and Crack the Skye are brilliant. The last two are a mixed bag; I don't like either one much, but they've each got enough good songs to be worth keeping around.

i think i like the songs on this record but it sounds like shit, at least on spotify. does the cd sound better? like muddy and tinny at the same time
― adam, Saturday, 2 January 2016 03:08 (eight years ago) link
my vinyl sounds a lot better than my autorip mp3s, no idea about the CD but I expect it will too.

some bands mentioned in this thread: kansas, drive by truckers, qotsa, foo fighters, trail of dead, burning airlines, thrice, black album-metallica.
which kinda sums up why i don't dig this kinda thing. i would never listen to any of that stuff.
if this album did sound like a combination of queen, thin lizzy, and trans am - also mentioned - i would probably like it a lot more.
it could be a 90's thing that i don't understand...
except for kansas. which would be a kansas thing that i don't understand.
― scott seward, Saturday, 2 January 2016 17:29 (eight years ago) link
the thrice comparison is really only in the dude's voice
― HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Saturday, 2 January 2016 18:16 (eight years ago) link
do they have any riffs on this album as good as this nu-alice in chains song?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBcADQziQWY
― scott seward, Saturday, 2 January 2016 18:35 (eight years ago) link
speaking of the 90's...
i would totally buy a nu-alice album if all the songs sounded like that one but i know that there are probably tedious 9 minute long epic trudges on nu-alice albums too. without really knowing. and epic inscrutable 90's grunge-metal videos to go along with them probably.
― scott seward, Saturday, 2 January 2016 18:38 (eight years ago) link
i did like one baroness album. probably the first one. i got bored of kylesa too. i had high hopes for them.

the blue one. i started a thread and everything:
Baroness - Blue Record
― scott seward, Saturday, 2 January 2016 18:42 (eight years ago) link
i revisited the blue record the other day! i kinda think this one is basically the blue record with tighter songs

Scott, if you don't like Kansas I don't understand you the way I thought I did. Those first five studio albums are pure heartland-prog gold.

i don't have a problem with kansas i just never listen to them.
― scott seward, Saturday, 2 January 2016 19:12 (eight years ago) link
actually, have i ever listened to an entire kansas album...??
First one is probably the best
― spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 2 January 2016 19:13 (eight years ago) link
we should do a kansas listening thread. i just checked and they have 14 studio albums.
― scott seward, Saturday, 2 January 2016 19:13 (eight years ago) link
I'd be down tbh
― spiritual hat gaz (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 2 January 2016 19:16 (eight years ago) link
I never knew much beyond the radio hits but I bought one of those Original Album Classics boxes with the first five albums on CD (remastered with bonus tracks) for $20 last year and was blown away by the stealth-Christian-rock arena-prog awesomeness. Organ and electric violin everywhere you look.

I have never heard a full Kansas album, I'd do it.
Also you have the suspense of waiting to hear what happens when Steve Morse of Dixie Dregs joins

I love how mad this album makes metal people
Reminds me of Cave In's "Jupiter" in terms of both sound and how it's being received.
― Your Ribs are My Ladder, Friday, 8 January 2016 11:27 (eight years ago) link
I guess after being totally sold on nu-Torche after Restarter (still a 2015 favorite), I was prepared to like this scrubbed-up version of Baroness, but can't get with the vocals at all. "Shock Me" sounds like Pyromania era Def Leppard and that's when it doesn't sound like Nickelback.
That said, drumming on this thing is pretty fuckin' serious.
― Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Friday, 8 January 2016 13:14 (eight years ago) link
