scott seward, Saturday, 19 December 2015 17:10 (three years ago) Permalink

drumming on this album doesn't really code to me as overplaying at all. or rather it varies. he spends a lot of "chlorine & wine" on a simple hi-hat/snare pattern that kinda contributes to the weird instability of that song

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 December 2015 16:45 (three years ago) Permalink

and it's a pretty samey record but idk, the songs are so tight

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Sunday, 20 December 2015 16:46 (three years ago) Permalink

as i said on the yellow & green thread the constantly shifting chords in the chorus of "shock me" are totally what made me fall for this record. also the extreme thin lizzy vibes in "chlorine," that kind of lopsided power ballad they were capable of

EZ Snappin, Monday, 28 December 2015 23:02 (three years ago) Permalink

And thank you for decrying their overplaying drummer. He's really, really talented but I wish he would settle in more often to locking the groove and not getting fusty with constant variations.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 28 December 2015 23:03 (three years ago) Permalink

Drummer is a little Jimmy Chamberlain in places. It's really just the first track that he's overbaking it to the point where it's distracting for me, though

Holy shit! I didn't realize the new drummer was Sebastian Thompson. He's a monster. I wonder if he's letting off steam finally getting to fully indulge his metal tendencies after years holding down perfect motorik grooves

Woah Trans Am dude, crazy, now that was a great band
But yeah sometimes he undermines the groove in a cool way sometimes it's a little annoying

It probably is, except I think Mastodon's first 4 albums are classic, Torche are by far at their best at their most pop, but Deafheaven and Baroness are embarassing to me in ways I find difficult to articulate

Mastodon's first and third albums are terrible and boring. Leviathan and Crack the Skye are brilliant. The last two are a mixed bag; I don't like either one much, but they've each got enough good songs to be worth keeping around.

some bands mentioned in this thread: kansas, drive by truckers, qotsa, foo fighters, trail of dead, burning airlines, thrice, black album-metallica.

which kinda sums up why i don't dig this kinda thing. i would never listen to any of that stuff.

if this album did sound like a combination of queen, thin lizzy, and trans am - also mentioned - i would probably like it a lot more.

it could be a 90's thing that i don't understand...

i would totally buy a nu-alice album if all the songs sounded like that one but i know that there are probably tedious 9 minute long epic trudges on nu-alice albums too. without really knowing. and epic inscrutable 90's grunge-metal videos to go along with them probably.

I guess after being totally sold on nu-Torche after Restarter (still a 2015 favorite), I was prepared to like this scrubbed-up version of Baroness, but can't get with the vocals at all. "Shock Me" sounds like Pyromania era Def Leppard and that's when it doesn't sound like Nickelback.

That said, drumming on this thing is pretty fuckin' serious.
