new thread cuz the tracklist looks crazy good & i think he killed this babyface collab

"blasé" is kinda wack to me & i don't get the fetty wap record at all but "saved" is great for what it is (pro forma mustard in late 2015) plus i think i love this babyface record

i think it's hilarious that it basically sounds like the acoustic version of a nonexistent but typical ty banger but then it has these little perfect melodic and instrumental flourishes

it's kinda like the r&b version of kanye/mccartneycore but like, actually good

J0rdan S., Friday, 23 October 2015 05:16 (two years ago) Permalink

i listened to the fetty wap song again -- i like it actually but it didn't make sense as a single aside from the fact that it says "ft fetty wap" on it

i agree that it seems like he is kind of being pulled in a few diff directions & it's not the most cohesive album but it's still pretty dope overall and there is still a certain sonic sensibility that flows through it

i think it's pretty clear ty likes a pretty diverse range of artists and appreciates different things about them, he came up on KROQ and his dad's funk music and his peers' gangster rap and is all about integrating those things

The kind of artist who brags about beating people up in Australia?

I see what you mean though, and I honestly find it kind of refreshing and interesting, as if he's in the process of figuring something out. There's something going on here with the return of the album skit which probably happens because someone has told him to open up a bit more about who he really is. But it's mostly confusing right now. If it sells (it won't) we'll come to think of it as significant.

this is overselling it. it's not like there are rock or funk songs on the album. it's more like he's being pulled in one direction by contemporary radio trends (well kinda, as much as mustardwave stuff or metro boomin could be considered that) and in the other by a more classic OG r&b sound. i think the album is pretty awesome but i see what lex is saying is all.

'solid' is a pop rock record w/ babyface and dramatic strings

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 14 November 2015 18:53 (two years ago) Permalink

there's clearly an individual sensibility in this album but ty's strangely opaque and tbh imo fairly unpleasant persona makes it difficult to correlate with any sense of being led by personal sentiment. he kinda comes off as just having a lizardly observant prowess at various things

'bring it out of me' is the track that stuck with me, maybe more accurately to me, as this album's spirit animal, not because good but because most truthfully perfunctory (it's not openly dishonest or cynical - he never fully is - but...)

r|t|c, Sunday, 15 November 2015 11:03 (two years ago) Permalink

and before anyone gets basic by persona i obv don't mean he says asshole things, it's just idk a slimy loner vibe between the lines

he has a bold facility with guest spots that's quite pleasing (having 40 on 'saved' instead of literally anyone else deserves pointing out, plus je drop, astute mmts use, take your pick) (no blahzay blahzay invitation tho :/). reminiscent of early kanye but again crucially without the same kid-in-a-sweetstore stunt 101 esprit

Horses In the Stable is my fav on here I think. Solid through Miracle/whatever is a great stretch.

I know when that Ott line zings (Spottie), Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:00 (two years ago) Permalink

yeah that part is great. "miracle" is really cool and "wherever" is a great beach house style track with more upgraded production. i actually really like the kanye/diddy track too, it's funny that he did an overt gospel record with them.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 18 November 2015 20:51 (two years ago) Permalink

love the line in horses in stable that's like 'met a girl in catalina, took it down last time i see her'

a bunch of this album -- including primarily those two songs -- were done by d'mile, hero of dirty money "shades"

Nice. yeah credit is superb

I know when that Ott line zings (Spottie), Thursday, 19 November 2015 07:57 (two years ago) Permalink

credit is my shit yeah. back half of this drags a bit though. 'bring it out of me' filed under mustardwave that totally misses the mark

tpp, Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:23 (two years ago) Permalink

i like that one but it's weird, it's like just a mustard song on fast forward. bizarre that he worked with stargate and ended up with a song that is such a mustard rip.

but yeah it seems like they weren't really sure what to do with the singles. "sittin pretty" (which i love) transitions into "when i see ya" pretty well but "blase" and "only right" are def just tacked on there, and then "bring it out of me" feels tacked on. "actress" is kind of a letdown but the sa ra track is dope.

the first run of 10 songs i find pretty flawless tho

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 November 2015 17:32 (two years ago) Permalink

yeah the kelz colab is disapoiinting for sure. sa ra track is out of place but individually good. track with jagged edge is ok but otherwise the first 2/3 of this is great.

J0rdan S., Friday, 20 November 2015 19:19 (one year ago) Permalink

yeah i don't necessarily think this album could have been better. just that now that its out, he'll be a little more free to be like, 'fuck it' and not chase the Current Sound

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 20 November 2015 21:40 (one year ago) Permalink

This album has so many (conflicting but) working definitions of "smooth".

Tim F, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 08:18 (one year ago) Permalink

it's the middle stretch of this album that really sags imo. obv never listening to "la" again but "saved" through to "horses in the stable" is pretty impeccable, then the trey and sevyn collabs are good-not-great, but then "miracle/wherever" and "guard down" completely halt the momentum...they sound so scratchily recorded and aimless and go on forever. then it only really regains its stride with the banger singles shoved at the end

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 13:19 (one year ago) Permalink

feel like "credit" could have leaned a lot more on its humorous premise...ty doesn't do half of what prime kellz would have done with the potentially ludicrous hook and the guest spot the song needs is sevyn running with the humour not being bland and mushy

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 13:20 (one year ago) Permalink

def see how "blasé"/"only right"/"bring it out of me" feel tacked on but they're also better songs than much of the album

lex pretend, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 13:24 (one year ago) Permalink

what's wrong with la?

flopson, Tuesday, 24 November 2015 14:19 (one year ago) Permalink

i don't really want him to be sexy. his misogyny sorta has that z-ro style 'ho just leave me alone playing xbox by my lonesome' almost cozy vibe. also the album has, like, musical humor that complements lyrical humour in a great way; the background vocs on "Know Ya" (strookiiin')

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:15 (one year ago) Permalink

i thought what jordan wrote about credit applies to most of the album actually, the songwriting stands alone. like "Straight up" is a how had no one phrased that verse melody before

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:18 (one year ago) Permalink

an album doesnt really need every style and every guest kinda a weird approach some imo, def jams on there tho, at least one major turd too

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 20:44 (one year ago) Permalink

the Kanye moment is a turd but such a quality lol that i listen to it every time

this album is almost entirely stylistically coherent, like remove track 2 and then everything up to blasé has ml the same vibe, at which pt it's refreshing to switch gears

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:10 (one year ago) Permalink

literally an insane statement

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:15 (one year ago) Permalink

i really don't think of this as an album that jumps around a lot stylistically, the classic soul samples tie it all together. even the metro boomin production sounds like temptations

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:21 (one year ago) Permalink

you think LA , straight up, horses, know ya, credit, miracle/whenever, sittin pretty have v different styles?

flopson, Thursday, 10 December 2015 21:24 (one year ago) Permalink

need to go back to beach house but i do feel i have overplayed his joyless ogling somewhat, still not real sexi but occasionally capable of a kind of ironized pat-on-the-ass affectionate warmth

also lol i love 'saved', wild out to that shit every time

think d-40 has a deeper investment and sees an extra upper echelon to him than others perhaps, not criticising cos in some ways understandable but mainly cos of that i was more about addressing the expectation/disappointment matrix for an album that otherwise is p above average okay imo

You’re on “Work From Home,” a huge song. In your mind, do you compartmentalize the crossover pop stuff you do — like “Drop That Kitty” with Charli XCX — and consider it a different part of your career than your solo stuff?

It’s just all dope music for me. With the Charli record, the producers played it for me, and I loved it, and I got Tinashe on it. My daughter loves Tinashe, so that was for her, right? The Fifth Harmony record, my daughter loves Fifth Harmony. I wouldn't have known about 'em, if it weren't for her. When she get's in the car, I'm like, "Play whatever you want to play." But this guy Chris Anokute, he was around Def Jam when I did “Toot It and Boot It” with YG, now he’s on Sony with L.A. Reid and them. Chris was like, “Yo, I want you to hop on this Fifth Harmony record. This is the next biggest sh-t out.” And I was like, “You don’t even gotta sell me the dream. This is my daughter’s favorite group, I’m down.” I did it so I could have something on her playlist, like, “It’s dad.” So I could be cool in her eyes and shit. I played her the clean version of the Campaign songs. This one song, called “3 Wayz” with me and Travis Scott, she said, “This is it!” I’m going with what she says. She gets it.
