so what shows have y'all had tickets to (paid tickets, not freebies you didn't use) that you weren't able to use? were you able to see them later on the same tour or another tour? how big of a bummer was missing the show, etc...also bonus points for the more outlandish reasons for missing (ie accidentally using the tickets as a makeshift joint).

and also what shows do you wish you hadn't used your tickets for?

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 13 September 2015 02:59 (six years ago) link

i probably took a bath on at least 3-4 shows a few years ago. Missed Geto Boys, Deicide, Anthrax, and Iced Earth.

Geto Boys was one of those shows that they announced well in advance of the show, and I was stoked for it, but when the show came around, I wasn't listening to as much hip hop anymore and I found a metal show I wanted to go to instead, and wasn't able to sell the ticket. regret missing them given how rare it was for them to come around given their legal troubles (think I saw Vader that night instead, though, who don't come here often either).

Deicide was just a casualty of buying a ticket on a night I had a performance in a short play and then finding out we were slotted last in the lineup so I couldn't make it. have seen them since tho...

Anthrax a similar reason (bought it, then joined a production and couldn't go on that night anymore). had seen once prior, but not since - being rectified in a few weeks.

Iced Earth I wound up not going because the jackass promoter (J0n F1nberg, an infamous asshole of the metal community) charged me for two tickets when I bought one, despite my insistence that I only bought one on my phone. and wouldn't give a refund, even fought the chargeback (and somehow won) with my bank. kinda bummed I didn't go cos even though the album they'd just put out sucked, they seem like a fun live show. was too afraid I'd knock that dickhole's lights out.

Wish I hadn't used my tickets to Meek Mill/Tyga that same year. Meek's tracks didn't have the vocals removed, and most of the time he just stood on stage dancing to other people's songs and going "yea, yeah" over it and nothing else.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 13 September 2015 03:06 (six years ago) link

Guided By Voices 2002 (had tickets, forgot to go, was a massive bummer).
Neurosis 2014 (had tickets, got drunk with mates, didn't have the inclination/ discipline to leave the bar, was bummed in a minor way afterwards, but on that particular night didn't favour intense, angry music anyway).

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 13 September 2015 03:10 (six years ago) link

the weirdest reason one acquaintance gave me, for a Metallica show I was supposed to see him at, was that he wanted to go but he was "working on his lawn and decided the lawn care was more important that night"

i had a friend who didn't join me at a Shellac show a couple of years ago because he was hungover. i genuinely thought that was pretty pissweak.

Depeche Mode on the World Violation tour, 1990. We had the tickets and were relying on a friend's mother to drive us to Atlanta for the show. She flaked out and nobody else's parents picked up the ball.

I was at highschool in Dallas and I remember at least 2 people asking me if I was going to the Nirvana show at Trees (Oct 19 1991) -- somehow at this late date I was still unaware of who they were so I shrugged it off. Supposedly a legendary show.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 13 September 2015 03:33 (six years ago) link

I had tickets to see Jimmy Page on the Outrider tour in 1988 and something happened... I got grounded or my parents decided it wasn't a great idea to let a dude take their 15 year old daughter across state lines to see Jimmy Page or maybe it was something more mundane like car trouble? I don't know but I was CRUSHED.

I have definitely had tickets to shows and then not gone (or gone and left early) a few times as an independent adult but I honestly can't remember them so clearly I was not too upset about the decision.

carl agatha, Sunday, 13 September 2015 03:40 (six years ago) link

ahh man at that Jimmy Page miss! :(

I just remembered I had a ticket to see Mercyful Fate the last time King and the band toured, in 1999. at the time, I had no car because I was away at school (TAllahassee), and the show was in Atlanta. Couldn't rent one as I was too young, and this was back before I was the self-sufficient traveler who was good at navigating buses/trains. So I wrote some real cheesy ride request note asking someone to help me see the "kings of dark metal" or some crap, of course no responses.

then some guy saw something I posted about MF online on some board, and he purported to be one of the tour crew for MF, and started emailing me, even intimating they might be able to like, pick me up or something.

dunno if he was legit or not. the show wound up getting cancelled anyway. I told myself no biggie, they'll be back in a year or two.

but nope, MF has not toured since, King has just done his solo thing since then.

how'd you forget to go? day arrived and you spaced that the show was that day?

boringly, that is exactly what happened. bought the tickets well in advance, made a vague mental note of an incorrect date, and didn't think about it again. i had a friend who was going, but i think he himself spaced out and forgot to give me a head's up. that didn't stop him from harping on about how unbelievable a show it was.

Jason Isbell, last month ;_;

we missed his last 2 Sacramento shows bc of timing etc, so this time we were determined to see him & bought tix to his Reno show AND hotel room as soon as the show announced in like June

Then Mr Veg down with the killer flu, sinuses were totally fucked & he was completely deaf in one ear, there was no way he could make the drive up over the mountains.

We tried to wait it out & even tried to offload to a friend but no

Fuck that was an expensive bath and we STILL havent seem him live since he left DBT :(

I didn't see Nirvana in Detroit on October 11th 1991 when I was in high school and visiting a friend in Ann Arbor; tickets were sold out and we weren't willing to gamble on trying to sneak in with ones for a different show.

I didn't see the Beastie Boys and Smashing Pumpkins finish Lollapalooza 1994 because I got arrested at the show.

went to see phil collins in '82 and it was great but when he started playing "in the air tonight" he put a big spotlight on me and then the cops came and arrested me. turned out i'd murdered somebody a couple years previously and phil saw the whole thing and wrote the song about me, and i wound up doing twenty for it, so i never saw the end of the show.

- missed Lollapalooza 91 because I'd totaled my car a month before hanging out with this super cool girl I was trying to impress but I didn't know where any "parties" were because I wasn't cool in that way, but instead we drove around country backroads trying to tail a car with a Jesus Loves Me bumper sticker and I got in an accident and rolled the car.

- Chrome a few months back because I had a weird panic attack and didn't want to leave the house (I haven't had a panic attack in about 15 yrs?)

- Malcolm Mooney in 2009 (?) because I spent his entire set making sure protesters didn't trash the building while they were trying to run from the phalanx of riot cops on the corner

- Aaron Dilloway from Wolf Eyes (about a year ago) because I tripped going down the stairs to the cool rad cave by the beach and sprained my ankle

This happens to me all the time b/c I travel frequently for my job. I buy tickets for shows I'm interested in as soon as they go on sale andd before I know when I will be travelling. Then I have to go away when the gig is on so I miss it. Refunds are never available of course so I normally end up making a little pyre and burning the tickets.

Had a ticket to see Karlheinz Stockhausen conducting one of his own pieces (I forget which) in London, but it was happening the day I got back from 3 week round-the-world honeymoon trip, with an ear infection, and I fell asleep. Woke up at 10pm, cursing. Then Stockhausen died (not that day you understand) so I never got to see the man in the flesh.

1993, not sure which artist, I'm guessing Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Brother came over to join. I couldn't find the keys to my house when we were to leave, didn't dare leave the house unlocked. Found keys the next day at a shop where we'd bought a six-pack.

March 1995, R.E.M.

July 1995, R.E.M.

^Both were cancelled and refunded of course, but man I was so bummed. Eventually saw them play an epic show at a festival a couple years later and all was good again.

I missed several in autumn 2012 due to a really arsehole housemove that took far too much time and caused far too much stress; a few were things I had guest list spots for, but I'd bought two tickets for Orbital, who I adore but have never seen for various stupid reasons, and just couldn't be arsed to drive the 200-mile round-trip on the day (it would have been after work).

Many many years ago I left a gig before the headliner came on because a; I'd seen them the previous night, and (more pertinently) b; I was absolutely pissed out of my mind and decided to go home instead.

Had a ticket to see REM and the Minutemen in 1985. Somehow my dad convinced me that it was a bad idea to go out that night because it was a school night. Can't remember if I gave the ticket away or what. Two or three weeks after the show D. Boon was killed and the Minutemen were no more. (And to this date I've still never seen REM.)

Had tickets to see Kraftwerk in 1991 (and a hot date to go with) but they scrapped their entire US tour. Fortunately did see Kraftwerk in 1998, which was very satisfying.

Last year I had a ticket to see Morrissey and Cliff Richard. Was really looking forward to seeing Cliff. Morrissey got sick and canceled the gig. To his credit, Cliff Richard did a makeup performance at a much smaller venue, but I couldn't make it to that.

Sturgill Simpson, a few weeks ago. I'd just finished performing a cabaret show, and opted to go for celebration drinks up the road with the cast, rather than make a 45 minute train journey.

Fall 1993 I missed Stereolab / Unrest / Butch Willis at 9:30 Club in DC. I had been super into both Stereolab and Unrest (Butch Willis, not so much) but couldn't get from Baltimore to DC on a weeknight and back again, plus had some insane amount of work to do for school (I was a junior in college at that point) so didn't go. I'd seen Unrest before but not Stereolab, though I got to see them the following year.

Some of these stories are making me disproportionately sad.

carl agatha, Monday, 14 September 2015 15:11 (six years ago) link

Was listening to the Grifters this morning. Very very sad I couldn't make the reunion show in NYC.

Also upset I never caught Sun Kil Moon in 2010 or earlier. Try seeing him live now and you'll be lucky to catch at least one song written at a time when he put energy into "singing" and "composition". He's trying something different out these days and doesn't want to be bothered much with anything he'd written prior to 2012 it seems.

Evan, Monday, 14 September 2015 15:20 (six years ago) link

One of my favorite bands as a kid was The Ramones, but I never got to see them because they typically played at a non-all ages venue when they came to town. In 1995 though, they were the headlining act at a local festival. I went, but everyone in my party had dosed earlier in the day, so as the end of the concert drew closer, we were completely exhausted. We ended up leaving during penultimate act Tony Bennett.

I had a ticket to see the Fall, got into the venue and stood through a pretty dire metalcore band that were the support act. Thought it was slightly weird that rest of the audience were all so young and dressed in black hoodies and stuff. Missing a concert by a band you don't expect to ever get the opportunity to see again sucks. Similar feeling to when a shirt you really like gets a weird little stain that doesn't really ruin it, but your awareness of it sours and distracts you just a little every time you put it on.

i wasn't specifically going to see them, but I missed Cannibal Corpse opening for Slayer because.....(and I will preface, this was one of the greatest days of my life)...

-my best friend was moving away in a month, and I wanted to treat her to a Slayer show before she left
-on my way to drive to pick her up, my landlord/roommate's big dog bit me on the hand (this was a previously abused dog before my landlord took her in, and the landlord had barely been home in weeks, so she was hiding behind a table. I guess my attempt to pet her was looked at as aggressive...poor thing)
-got delayed a half hour as I checked my hand to make sure it hadn't broken skin, as well as notify the owner, and make sure the dog was ok before I left.
-after the fourth google of "I got bit by a dog, will I die?", I said "fuck it, I'm going to see Slayer", and drove to her place
-We were now running behind and going to our AirBNB. I wanted to get in and out fast so we could make Corpse by 6.
-We get there, friend was not thrilled with the AirBNB. I assured her it was fine, I'd stayed in it 3 times prior (completely coincidentally - including the exact room we were in!)
-It's now too late to pregame with beer in our room, when suddenly I remember there's literally a WingHouse across the street from the venue we're going to
-We decide to get shitfaced at much more affordable prices while eating wings.
-We got a little too comfy, and suddenly the clock showed 6 pm and, well....we had just ordered more beer

So yeah, we get there too late to see Corpse, which was disappointing as I wanted her to see them. So because we missed them, we went over to the picnic table area, where we immediately made new friends and

-Smoked THC thru vape with them, while getting drunker
-Another friend showed up, we smoked with her too
-Slayer came on and my friend was floating as was I
-We decided to go to an 'adult establishment', where we both did coke with one of the employees
-got back at like 3 am, where I got angry at her for playing spotify at 3 am
-both of us hung over af and feeling like death the next morning, and I had to make it home for a date

we both agree that's our favorite memory with each other.

I was supposed to go see Christian Scott at the Blue Note in NYC in March. The show was the week NYC started to shut down; it wasn't cancelled but venues were reduced to 50% capacity. I got spooked and didn't go. Happy ending, though... the gigs were recorded, and there's a live album, which I have happily purchased. (It's great, but I'm still glad I stayed home.)

I had 4 Radiohead tickets for the OK Computer tour and lost them. Tore my bedroom to pieces looking for them but to no avail. Still no idea what I did with them.

Aw. If only it had happened in the digital ticket age

I didn’t have tickets but in my final year of high school (1991) I missed shows by MBV, Neubauten and Jane’s Addiction - have seen all 3 subsequently (albeit past their respective peaks) but the regret of missing those shows has been a powerful engine fuelling all my subsequent gig-going

Sleazy from Coil/TG played his only gig in Australia one night when I happened to be visiting Melbourne, but he was on at midnight and I had a 6am flight home - in retrospect I would have made the effort!

I vaguely regret not having seen Hawkwind when they came out 10-15 years ago, and recently found out that Peter Hammill played solo shows here in 1997 - at which point I had zero interest in VDGG, so I can’t really beat myself up about not going, but still

one year passes...

High on Fire in like 2016 because I'd been traveling all around the country going to shows, this one was in Atlanta, and I just didn't have it in me to go, so I hung out with a friend instead.

Witch Mountain a year or two later, because I decided to go see Chicago in Tampa with my mom (it was almost the 30 year anniversary of the Chicago show my folks took me to), and didn't have it in me to drive 90 minutes to get mom home, and then another 6 to Atlanta.

(the next day, obviously)

My senior year in high school, a friend of mine had tickets to see Talking Heads on the Speaking in Tongues tour at Red Rocks. I turned down the invitation. To this day, I don't know why. It as about a 2.5 hour drive for us, but still.

Actually, it was probably the show in September 1982, before Speaking in Tongues came out. The only song they played from that album was Swamp.

Not really a missed concert, but a venue that has seemingly decided to miss concerts.

Anybody know the venue Furnace 41 in Georgia? They cancelled the Hypocrisy show one day out last month without explanation. Tonight they cancelled tomorrow's Suffocation show.

Neither was COVID or band-related (in fact, Suffo are playing tonight in Jacksonville). The Hypocrisy show, they emailed their ticket holders with a snotty note that said they would not be sharing any more information.

I'm not going there or anything, but I travel to Georgia now and then, just wondering if this is some weird scam venue that cancels metal shows conspiratorially
