I was all about JoC in the late 2000s. Like most of my vinyl my copies are in storage (I have the three Capitol albums, plus one from "The Joy" and the Brown/Garthwaite 'In Nashville' lp). Seem to recall Castles being the best, but there's nice stuff on all of them--totally worth the $10 it takes to get them all on wax.

I’m related to two members of this band by marriage and got to hang out with them in California. Great people.

Cool, so Terry and David, right? She's a super singer. They were one of the first national bands I ever saw as a kid, at the MN State Fair teen pavilion. Toni Brown had left by that time, and was replaced by Willow Wray (yes, related to Fay. She passed away from cancer recently, and this story is pretty amazing.)

Listening to Closer to the Ground today. Because they had a percussionist in addition to a drummer many songs have great breaks that I'm surprised haven't been sampled more.

Also Terry Garthwaite's first solo alb that I know of, the 1975 Terry: excellent slippery grip on rhythm, informed by jazz, blues (in the sense that my older CD store customers used that term, way back, incl. Nat King Cole Piano Trio, Lattimore, Etta James etc), and a reggae version of "You Send Me" (Sam Cooke always did seem like a big influence on Bob Marley, come to think of it), also a post-doo-wop rock shuffle, "Angel of love" (original, I think). And a lot of other stuff. Pretty exploratory, ramblin' some, but well worth sticking with. Follow-up Hand in Glove not as amazing maybe, should listen again. Made a few more, haven't heard 'em. Reunion album as The Joy was pretty good, best I recall, but Terry was the post-JOC that stuck in my head. Vocal approach maybe a bit too Billie-esque at times, but playfully so, def. in TG's own context.

She has also begun to think about her legacy a bit, especially as some of her friends have passed away: Toni Brown, who lived nearby in Woodacre, died last August after a long illness. “That was a blessing that she finally went,” Garthwaite says softly, “because she wasn’t happy being here anymore.”
I guess this is the breaking of that story, as a quick Google search didn't turn anything else up.
RIP Toni
