Emily King - The Switch

I'd never heard of her before last night, but apparently she was Grammy-nominated back in 2007 for her first album. She's opened for John Legend, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, and Emeli Sandé over the years. Seems to be one of those artists who lives so deep inside the industry it's hard to break out.

I can't stan for every single track on The Switch—it sometimes drifts into that coffee bar acoustic guitar la-la music—but the songs that lean more r&b are immaculately produced and she can do some amazing things with a melody. I'm still unpacking this album, but I've already listened to it six times and I don't really want to stop.

any tracks u recommend for those who are not sure whether to dive in headfirst?

dyl, Monday, 3 August 2015 19:17 (four years ago) link

My current two favorites on the record:

Sleepwalker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W35Rh5BA1tU

Politely funky.

Off Center
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbmQp6LMdxs

Right at 1:45, this ^ turns into a completely different and transcendent experience.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 3 August 2015 19:18 (four years ago) link

I'm reminded a little bit of Nikka Costa through the whole thing, but whereas Nikka was more of a dive bar kind of artist, Emily King seems a little more cosmopolitan.

I realize citing Nikka Costa as a reference would probably make most everybody say "who gives a fuck!" but I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

this is good. Sleepwalker espesh.

Yep. Some of these songs remind me a lot of Under the Cherry Moon/Parade era Prince in particular.

My friend just sent me Believer from this album so I checked out the rest of it. This is a really gorgeous record. I'm surprised how little discussion there is about her considering how popular KING are on here.

Indeed. I just listened to it again for the first time in a few months. So good!

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 19:50 (three years ago) link

I don't remember it placing in the top 77 albums list for last year. Did it make it lower down on the list? I would have definitely voted for it if I'd heard it.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 19:55 (three years ago) link

I could give you a definitive answer if search was working worth a damn right now, but I'm pretty sure I nominated it.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:08 (three years ago) link

I just found it. It came in at 772 with just the one vote (14 points). Is there any way we can claim 2016 was her year of impact and give it another chance?

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:10 (three years ago) link

It ranked #772 with one vote (14 points).

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:11 (three years ago) link

It did get reissued as a "deluxe" version this year, so whoever wants to nominate is welcome to.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:12 (three years ago) link

I'll go for it. I'll have to do some proper campaigning and everything. It seems like the kind of record people would love.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 20:14 (three years ago) link

i still listen to this a lot. sent it to my sis and she loves it too

Spottie, Tuesday, 13 September 2016 21:23 (three years ago) link

this record was a slight letdown for me but only because the Seven EP is some of my favorite music by anyone ever, still, The Switch is very good.

very nice live rendering of "Distance" here:

Only just found out she has a new album out next week. Just catching up on the singles and everything is sounding so good. Really hyped for this.

Yeah, the latest one, "Can't Hold Me," is super good. Looking forward to this.

Whoa thanks

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 January 2019 04:12 (eight months ago) link

Ah, this album is so gorgeous. I really needed this today.

kitchen person, Friday, 25 January 2019 05:06 (eight months ago) link

Totally in love with her new album. It makes a nice companion to the recent Natalie Prass one.

Love how much she's channeling Prince on the last few songs.

Oh god yeah, that is a stunning moment. My current favourite is Running. The vulnerability in her voice when she gets to the chorus, especially towards the end is incredible.

This whole album is an absolute triumph and I really hope more people come round to it over the year.
