How do you buy actual CDs of the two Christgau reviewed? I looked around a couple of weeks ago and could only find mp3s.

Looks like just cassettes and MP3s are available now.

Great summer for Paranoid Style fans. Their debut album comes out in a couple weeks. Stream the first song, which is excellent, below.

Tim Bracy from the Mendoza Line. The singer is his wife.

yeah they were a great band, Whiney's random dig at them in some piece hailing the rise of GAPDY still irks

stoked for this

kind of sad that elizabeth nelson, the songwriter and the face of the band, is here only identified as 'tim bracy from the mendoza line's wife.' she seems neat!

"There’s something about watching people apply themselves to helping children read at an appropriate grade level that really gives you a lot of perspective on whether or not you’re going to get a rad review in Pitchfork. I mean, if I ever lose that perspective, then I’ll have failed in a really fundamental way."

I see that I posted something about this band years ago, but I only just now got into their 2019 album A Goddamn Impossible Way of Life (oddly enough, following a recommendation from the bad-book podcast I Don't Even Own a Television, and I'm hooked on it. I was a Mendoza Line fan, and this reminds me of them quite a bit, and the whole New Pornographers/Weakerthans/Wussy strain of brainy, super melodic rock in general. Great hooks, even better songwriting; the first time through, I think I laughed out loud at a lyric at least once per song.

Also, they did this:

Nelson is busy tweeting about her fave 60s through 80s music ( mostly)

new record out today; haven't listened yet

she's really good at those capsule xgau-ish (tweet) reviews -- and i totally appreciate her tastes -- but nevertheless i kind of hate them? just too precious somehow, especially the kickers

yeah i kind of dig this band kind of dislike it?

but it definitely feels like it stands the old axiom "music critics are just failed musicians" on its head

yeah they're starting to bug me, this album is pretty fun and chill imo except for the last song?

A nervy shotgun wedding between Nick Drake’s pastoral meditations and Richard Thompson’s visceral rage-folk, John Cale’s ‘Vintage Violence’ is a masterclass of menacing death boogie, nightmare-adjacent prophecies and psychological disassociation. A terrible night for a moondance.
