man I never make it to those Santa Cruz shows but I think I might just see the Beat given Rankin' Roger's death. I'd see Living Color too.

Taylor Dayne is playing some fucked up venues on what I assume is her comeback tour. Her other bay area show is at some family run theater in San Leandro.

akm, Wednesday, 10 April 2019 22:43 (five years ago) link

setlist.fm has her averaging 11 clubs and county fairs and casinos a year for the last four years (fewer, but some, every year from 2008). presumably she has a fanbase that don't care very much about that website and some gigs go unrecorded.

missed that important lollapalooza update

some friends who went to a lot of festivals a decade ago used to joke that lollapalooza's headliners were usually the headliners from the previous year's coachella. we're apparently at full parity now

Who cares if it's a mess "conceptually and intellectually"? My gf and I are probably going to go. Went last year, it's a good time.

as long as the actual festival logistics are good I can appreciate a shotgun-style approach for booking

hoping for that long-awaited cirque du soleil/desus & mero collaboration

This may not fit the thread topic, as they're all good bands, but I don't really think of any of these headliners (the familiar acts listed on first four lines) as having fans in common?: https://pasadenadaydream.com/

I don't really think of any of these headliners (the familiar acts listed on first four lines) as having fans in common?

The Cure and Pixies are two enormously popular indie bands of the late 80s and early 90s; I'd be more surprised at people who liked the work of one and had active antipathy toward work of the other of the same period.

Robert Smith famously hired the Deftones' producer for one of their two 21st century albums, and even signed to his own label for it (to be fair to you, the Cure's bassist hated the experience, the person, and the record), and booked the band at Meltdown last year.

And the Cure took Mogwai as one of the mainstage headliners on their touring Curiosa festival - both bands play long, dirgey-but-developing-and-dynamic guitar-driven music, so surely plenty of people are capable of enjoying both (hello!).

Ok, “uncle”! Lol

the last Berry La Croix in the work fridge (morrisp), Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:27 (four years ago) link

Lol is your uncle?!

(the Deftones connection doesn't work for me either, but even if Robert's the only Cure fan who likes 'em, there's plenty of precedent by now!)

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

The Pixies and Cure feel to me like they occupy (obviously) adjacent but largely separate universes (like, I’ve never personally known anyone who was a big fan of both) — but that Dodger Stadium bill does seem to make sense in context (Love and Rockets feels like a link between the two).

the last Berry La Croix in the work fridge (morrisp), Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:35 (four years ago) link

I'd be more surprised at people who liked the work of one and had active antipathy toward work of the other of the same period.

I live only 15min away from the venue and would probably go to this, but I've consistently been anti-Pixies over the years. I was at that Dodger Stadium show and skipped most of their set.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:43 (four years ago) link

i was also at the Dodger Stadium show, Shelleyan Orphan was also on that bill. see The Cure: Classic or Dud? for my night.

c'mon morrisp, you are better than this and this is ILM goddammit. there is no need to call people "“uncle”! Lol. tho your last post sort of saves you a bit but the Pixies and the Cure connection is obvious. Throwing Muses playing again at a Cure show also seems right as well in 2019.

Bee OK, Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:56 (four years ago) link

Lol!

I guess Throwing Muses and Pixies also have certain historical connections that I wasn’t thinking about

the last Berry La Croix in the work fridge (morrisp), Thursday, 25 July 2019 05:58 (four years ago) link

A: the mad decent festival seems like it was a trolling/fake thing since the beginning but I wont lie, it seems stupid fun and would have probably been a success considering everyone involved on the music-side.

I’ll say this, if one music label/collective could be branded into an amusement park / festival of sorts, mad decent would be it. Diplo and friends are in the very comfortable spot of influencing both the mainstream and the counter-cultural aspect of it, whatever that means.

The point is that if asked for investment money on a mad decent festival, I would have blindly said yes. Diplo alone has a connection with fucking everyone from Justin Bieber to Alan Vega.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 25 July 2019 06:25 (four years ago) link

B: I know a lot of people who are fans of Cure, Pixies and Deftones. I don’t see how those headliners are controversial in the same slot.

If we change those three headliners to something similar but not quite, likes let’s see:

Pet Shop Boys
Jack Johnson
Perfect Circle

Then yeah, I would have said: “this is a fucking terrible idea”, even though I wouldn’t mind seeing them in a different setting. However Cure, Deftones and Pixies together seem like it would attract a more common crowd than what you may think.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 25 July 2019 06:33 (four years ago) link

I can picture a white jeep circa 1999 with stickers on the back for Cure, Pixies, Deftones. And of course NIN. Likely RHCP or Jane's Addiction too.

bendy, Thursday, 25 July 2019 11:51 (four years ago) link

I can definitely imagine my friends who were into the pixies in the early 90s rolling their eyes at The Cure, but yeah by the end of the decade those two constituencies seem to have merged.

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Thursday, 25 July 2019 13:06 (four years ago) link

that mad decent fest was definitely not a “troll.” it was heavily
promoted at the big festival here (boston calling) and the billie eilish show in june (she was one of the headliners and i’m betting she fueled a lot of ticket sales). the stadium where it was held was likely banking on it being huge as its concert schedule this year was much more sparse than 2018’s, which had taylor, beyoncé/jay-z, and two kenny chesney shows as its high points (this year there were only five shows total counting mad decent).

that said the heat this past weekend would have likely put the kibosh on it like it did with ozyfest in nyc. miguel can’t catch a break!

maura, Thursday, 25 July 2019 14:08 (four years ago) link

never underestimate the festival promoter with "ideas" who books a bunch of different acts hoping they'll attract several distinct groups and bump up ticket sales

devvvine, Thursday, 25 July 2019 14:25 (four years ago) link

given the 80k capacity (and less than gushing publicity), i am suspicious that the ozyfest cancellation was a lucky case of them being able to make more money through insurance than ticket sales but what do i know.
