gonna give it my first shot in weeks b/c Brad.

yeah really liking unputdownable, thanks Brad. I think i was put off by the single with the queazy speeding-slowing thing going on. hated that.
― Acting Crazy (Instrumental) (jed_), Wednesday, 29 July 2015 14:46 (eight years ago) link
Too quiet and the melodies are skimpy.
sympathetic to this but i think i like it bc of how pared down and nervously quiet it is

also i'm a real sucker for the jazzy guitar runs in "exploitation" and "house of glass"

If you mean Exploitation, that's one of the things I like about that track (my favorite from the album, in either the single version or album version).

ah so there IS a thread. doesn't come up in the search for Roisin. first track is amazing. good to see it got a Mercury nod. this is her best stuff IMO.
― piscesx, Monday, 19 October 2015 15:28 (eight years ago) link
the lack of love would be more baffling if this weren't a very quiet and elusive record

The full version looks like it's getting released on Friday (digital/12") and is 7+ minutes. WANT

He should do a full remix album. The video is so good too.

hell yeah. hairless toys didn't hit me at first but now i think it's amazing... i listened again keeping a couple comments in mind i'd read on the EOY 2015 thread, something about how 'evil eyes' switches gears into a boogie song four mins in. her previous album, which i love, even sounded a bit drab afterward in comparison.

new track is nice, hadn't seen the tweets so I wasn't expecting something new already.

This song is like a series of forks in the road, and she took the right one every time.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 19 April 2016 13:46 (eight years ago) link
Yeah, this is great! Even though it's the sort of thing my pop-structured mind tends to find unpleasant, it works when Róisín does it.
― daavid, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 14:20 (eight years ago) link
just came here to post about the new album. nothing for 8 years then 2 albums inside 1 year. weird huh? last album is amazing, easily her best IMO.
by the way this thread is impossible to find.
― piscesx, Tuesday, 19 April 2016 20:37 (eight years ago) link
Hairless Toys was impressive but I still love Overpowered more than anything she's done, though.

album title is intriguing

'ten miles high' on repeat

Album sampler. Properly bonkers as expected. I feel like Róisín is now fully in her own world... and what a beautiful and mysterious world that is!

Róisín DGAF!
tbh I'm not into very much of this, at least at this early stage, but good on her
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 6 July 2016 03:55 (seven years ago) link
It seems to lose a bit of momentum towards the second half. But the first four tracks or so have some incredible moments.
― daavid, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 04:02 (seven years ago) link
I love that the bass is used so sparsely (both here and in Hairless Toys) but when it's there, it's fucking there. No messing around.
― daavid, Wednesday, 6 July 2016 04:12 (seven years ago) link
this record is super fucking wacky. also "ten miles high" is a masterpiece

I don't have any fully-formed opinions yet but this album is amazing.
― ǂbait (seandalai), Saturday, 9 July 2016 00:42 (seven years ago) link
New album is utterly bonkers.
― chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:38 (seven years ago) link
It sounds like Disco Volante era Mr Bungle in some sections.
― chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:39 (seven years ago) link
I'm not liking this new direction.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:39 (seven years ago) link
I think I like it, but it'll take me a few listens to confirm.
― chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link
She has too powerful a voice and presence to murmur over slow tracks.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link
It's not all that though. I get the impression that they're the kind of tracks which will reveal their underlying structure and power over time.
― chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link
"ten miles high" reminds me heavily of moloko
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link
also idk if sustained murmuring is really a new direction for róisín
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:49 (seven years ago) link
The beats tended to be kinetic ("Dear Miami").
I like "Ten Miles High" too.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link
imo it's the best song from both albums

btw can someone tell me how to pronounce her first name? Is it RO-SHEEN?
I don't want to embarrass myself this weekend around fellow music nerds.

iirc yes
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:56 (seven years ago) link
Nervous Sleep is pretty extraordinary (this may be the one that Alfred is thinking of most with his "mumbling over slow tracks" description)
― chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link
Enjoying this a lot. It was less instant than Hairless Toys but I'm enjoying it more as a whole after a few plays. Some of it reminds me of a more mellow version of Ruby Blue.
― Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link
that's correct Alfred. The accents indicate an elongated vowel sound
― Number None, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 19:36 (seven years ago) link
whoa take her up to monto is really great. sort of like if all the weird sui generis organically sprouting ideas of hairless toys were pushed even further and the carefulness abandoned

^^^ yep
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 12:40 (seven years ago) link
like the surprise groove in "evil eyes" but happening all the time
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link
it's all much more labyrinthine than the way most of the tracks on Hairless Toys would slowly unfold. i don't enjoy it quite as much but it's definitely an incredible 2 hours or so that have come from those sessions
